The increasing prevalence of problematic social media use (PSMU) has heightened concerns about its adverse impact on internet users’ mental health, specifically, on suicidality. Despite reviews investigating the associations between PSMU, emotion regulation, and suicidality, there is a lack of understanding of the potential role that specific emotion regulation might play. This study aimed to bridge this gap by examining the mediating role of four specific maladaptive cognitive emotion regulation strategies (CERS) (i.e., rumination, self-blame, other-blame, catastrophizing) in the prospective link between PSMU and suicidal ideation in a sample of 517 adolescents (M = 13.41, SD = 1.06). Results showed that PSMU was significantly associated with suicidal ideation nine months after. Maladaptive CERS were negatively associated with both PSMU and suicidal ideation, with the exception of other-blame, that was not significantly related to PSMU. Findings of mediation analyses indicated that solely self-blame mediates the negative and prospective link between PSMU and suicidal ideation. Specifically, those adolescents who present PSMU were found to show higher self-blame that, in turn, contributed to greater suicidal ideation nine months later. These findings reinforce the notion that not only PSMU might be a risk factor for suicide in adolescence, but also that efforts should focus on identifying and helping adolescents reduce self-blame. Implications of this study for the prevention of suicidal ideation associated with PSMU in adolescents are discussed., Parte del proyecto I+D+i PID2020-117006RB-I00, financiado por MCIN/AEI/10.13039/501100011033, Grupo de investigación Applied Positive Lab CTS-1048G-FEDER (Junta de Andalucía), Ayuda FPU23/03374, financiada por MICIU/AEI /10.13039/501100011033 y por el FSE+ (V. Background: Problematic Internet Use (PIU) has become a significant concern among adolescents. While previous studies have examined individual predictors of PIU, the role of teachers' emotionally intelligent behaviors (TEIB) in mitigating PIU remains unexplored.
Objective: This research aims to examine the underlying mechanisms in the link between TEIB and PIU through a serial mediation model involving teacher-student relationships (TSR) and stress in two independent studies.
Methods: Two studies with Spanish adolescents were conducted: a cross-sectional study (N = 1,966) and a 9-month prospective study (N = 517). TEIB, TSR, stress symptoms (Study 1), perceived stress (Study 2), and PIU were assessed.
Results: In both studies, TEIB was positively associated with TSR and negatively associated with stress and PIU. The serial mediation path was significant: TEIB predicted higher TSR, which in turn was linked to lower stress levels, thereby reducing PIU. In Study 1, both simple and serial mediation effects were significant, whereas in Study 2, only the serial mediation effect was supported.
Conclusion: These findings highlight the importance of teachers' emotionally intelligent behaviors in reducing students’ PIU. Schools should consider implementing emotional skills training programs for teachers to foster supportive teacher-student relationships and promote healthier online behaviors among adolescents. Finally, school-based recommendations for teachers to prevent adolescents from PIU are suggested in the light of our findings., This work was part of the R+D+i project PID2020-117006RB-I00, funded by MCIN/AEI/10.13039/501100011033/ and Group CTS-1048G-FEDER (Junta de Andalucía). The scientific literature provides evidence that factors such as fear of missing out (FoMO) and emotional intelligence (EI) can be related to problematic internet behaviours, but few studies have been conducted on PSU in adolescents. This study aimed to examine how FoMO and EI might explain PSU in adolescents. Methods: The sample consisted of 537 students (12–17 years old) who completed scales assessing problematic smartphone use, fear of missing out, and emotional intelligence. Results: The results showed in both cases moderate, significant and positive correlations between PSU and FoMO, while significant and negative correlations between PSU and EI were observed. In addition, high FoMO and deficits in EI were found to explain part of the variance in PSU. Conclusions: The results are discussed based on the Theory of compensatory internet use.

DATASET. Purpose: Prior research indicates that problematic social media use (PSMU) is associated with cyberbullying perpetration (CBP) in adolescents. PSMU has been linked to sleep disturbances, and existing studies show that sleep difficulties are also associated with cyberbullying perpetration. Nevertheless, the interplay among these three variables remains unexplored. The present study examines whether PSMU is directly associated with later CBP and indirectly through poor sleep quality in adolescents.
Methods: A sample of 335 students aged 12-17 years from four schools completed standardized and validated measures of PSMU, sleep quality, and CBP in a two‑wave longitudinal design with a 9‑month interval. A mediation analysis was conducted following the guidelines of the PROCESS macro for SPSS.
Results: Problematic social media use was associated with subsequent cyberbullying perpetration both directly and indirectly via sleep quality. These findings underscore the relevance of considering sleep quality alongside problematic social media use in cyberbullying prevention efforts for adolescents, with implications for both boys and girls.
Conclusions: The results suggest that interventions targeting both problematic social media use and sleep quality may help reduce cyberbullying perpetration among adolescents., Parte del proyecto I+D+i PID2020-117006RB-I00, financiado por MCIN/AEI/10.13039/501100011033, Ayuda FPU23/03374, financiada por MICIU/AEI /10.13039/501100011033 y por el FSE+ (V. Previous research reports that cybervictims are more likely to experience suicidal ideations. Gratitude and life satisfaction have shown to predict suicide risk, but they have rarely been explored in the cyberbullying context. Hence, this study examined the roles of gratitude and life satisfaction in suicide risk in cyberbullying situations. An initial sample of 858 adolescents participated in a prospective study, completing questionnaires assessing gratitude, life satisfaction, cyberbullying experiences and suicidal ideation. Results showed that low levels of gratitude and life satisfaction influence suicidal ideation in cybervictimized adolescents. Limitations and implications of this study are discussed., Parte del proyecto I+D+i PID2020-117006RB-I00, financiado por MCIN/AEI/10.13039/501100011033, Parte del proyecto UMA 18-FEDERJA-147 financiado por Junta de Andalucía/Fondos FEDER, Grupo de investigación Applied Positive Lab CTS-1048G-FEDER (Junta de Andalucía)
