Interval-valued fuzzy sets are a generalization of classical fuzzy sets where the membership values are intervals. The epistemic interpretation of interval-valued fuzzy sets assumes that there is one real-valued membership degree of an element within the membership interval of possible membership degrees. Considering this epistemic interpretation, we propose a new measure, called IV-embedding, to compare the precision of two interval-valued fuzzy sets. An axiomatic definition for this concept as well as a construction method are provided. The construction method is based on aggregation operators and the concept of interval embedding, which is also introduced and deeply studied., Authors would like to thank for the support of the Spanish Ministry of Science and Technology project TIN2017-87600-P (I. In this work we consider some classes of functions with relaxed monotonicity conditions generalizing some other given classes of fusion functions. In particular, directionally increasing aggregation functions (called also pre-aggregation functions), directionally increasing conjunctors, or directionally increasing implications, etc., generalize the standard classes of aggregation functions, conjunctors, or implication functions, respectively. We analyze different properties of these classes of functions and we discuss a construction method in terms of linear combinations of t-norms., H. Bustince and J. Starting from the notion of a multidistance, we formalize, through a suitable system of axioms, the concept of an inequality measure defined on a nonempty set with no additional structure implemented a priori. Among inequality measures, apart from multidistances we pay special attention to dispersions, and study their main features. Classical concepts will be generalized to this abstract setting. Multidistances are then revisited, and some new methods to generate them are implemented. A wide spectrum of interdisciplinary applications is outlined in the final section., This work is partially supported by the research projects ECO2015-65031-R , MTM2015-63608-P , TIN2016-77356-P , TIN2017-87600-P (MINECO/AEI-FEDER, UE) and PID2019-108392GB-I00 (AEI/10.13039/501100011033)

In this paper some properties of two-determinant pivoting for Neville elimination are presented. In particular, we consider a zero-increasing property and we show an optimal normwise growth factor. Comparisons with other pivoting strategies for Neville elimination and with Gaussian elimination with partial pivoting of almost strictly sign regular matrices are performed. Numerical examples are included.

The combined matrix is a very useful concept for many applications. Almost strictly sign regular (ASSR) matrices form an important structured class of matrices with two possible zero patterns, which are either type-I staircase or type-II staircase. We prove that, under an irreducibility condition, the pattern of zero and nonzero entries of an ASSR matrix is preserved by the corresponding combined matrix. Without the irreducibility condition, it is proved that type-I and type-II staircases are still preserved. Illustrative numerical examples are included.

The present paper focuses on the study of the conditions under which the covariance matrix of a multivariate Gaussian distribution is totally positive, paying particular attention to multivariate Gaussian distributions that are Gaussian Markov Random Fields. More specifically, it is proven that, if the graph over which the Gaussian Markov Random Field is defined consists of path graphs and the covariances between adjacent variables on the graph are non-negative, then there always exists a reordering of the variables that renders the resulting covariance matrix totally positive. Moreover, this reordering is identified and some cases for which the conditions for the covariance matrix of a multivariate Gaussian distribution to be totally positive are necessary and sufficient are provided.

Diet is one of the main sources of exposure to toxic chemicals with carcinogenic potential, some of which are generated during food processing, depending on the type of food (primarily meat, fish, bread and potatoes), cooking methods and temperature. Although demonstrated in animal models at high doses, an unequivocal link between dietary exposure to these compounds with disease has not been proven in humans. A major difficulty in assessing the actual intake of these toxic compounds is the lack of standardised and harmonised protocols for collecting and analysing dietary information. The intestinal microbiota (IM) has a great influence on health and is altered in some diseases such as colorectal cancer (CRC). Diet influences the composition and activity of the IM, and the net exposure to genotoxicity of potential dietary carcinogens in the gut depends on the interaction among these compounds, IM and diet. This review analyses critically the difficulties and challenges in the study of interactions among these three actors on the onset of CRC. Machine Learning (ML) of data obtained in subclinical and precancerous stages would help to establish risk thresholds for the intake of toxic compounds generated during food processing as related to diet and IM profiles, whereas Semantic Web could improve data accessibility and usability from different studies, as well as helping to elucidate novel interactions among those chemicals, IM and diet., This work is receiving support from the project RTI2018-098288-B-I00 (MCIU/AEI/FEDER, UE) and is based on concepts developed partly funded by projects TIN2017-88877-R (AEI/FEDER, UE), TIN2017-87600-P (AEI/FEDER.
