The item is made of 2 files, of which 1 is the dataset and the other include detailed information about measures realized.-- Dataset contributed to the Project Carbochange, This dataset gathers discrete measurements of CO2 (pH and alkalinity) and hydrographic variables (salinity, temperature, dissolved oxygen, nitrate, phosphate and silicate) obtained during the cruise MOC2EQ carried out from 5 April to 16 May 2010. pH was measured spectrophotometrically following the Clayton and Byrne (1993). This method consists on adding a dye solution to the seawater sample, so that the ratio between two absorbances at two different wavelengths is proportional to the sample pH. Alkalinity was measured using an automatic potentiometric titrator Titrando 809 Metrohm, with a Metrohm 6.0232.100 combination glass electrode and a Pt-1000 probe for temperature measurement following the methodology given by Pérez and Fraga (1987). Dissolved oxygen was analyzed following the widely applied Winkler method. Determinations of nitrate, phosphate and silicate were carried out following methods described by Hansen and Grassoff (1983) Salinity and Temperature were recorded with a CTD probe, Spanish Projects GHG4MOC (CTM2009-07574-E) and MOC2 (CTM2008-06438-C02-01/MAR) supported by Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación, and CARBOCHANGE (264879), No

This dataset compiles information obtained during the cruise RETRO-BMC. A companion dataset includes additional information obtained using high-frequency profiling floats and a high-resolution microstructure profiler. The "readme file" contains a description of the different folders and archives, The RETRO-BMC oceanographic cruise was designed to characterize the spatial structures and variability of the Brazil-Malvinas Confluence (BMC) region. The cruise was carried in April 2017 on board the R/V Hespérides, departing from Ushuaia (Argentina) and arriving to Santos (Brazil). There were a total of 33 hydrographic stations, carried out between 13 and 25 April 2017. All stations were offshore from the continental platform and within 42ºS-36ºS and 58ºW-52ºW. Conductivity-temperature-depth (CTD) data were obtained with a SeaBird 911 Plus multi-parametric probe, with redundant salinity and temperature sensors, and additional dissolved oxygen (SBE-43) and fluorescence and turbidity (Wetlabs AFL-NTU-RTD) sensors. Water velocity data was obtained at the stations with a lowered acoustic Doppler current profiler (LADCP) and along the ship’s track with the vessel-mounted ADCP (VADCP). During the entire ship’s track inside the study region, the VADCP gathered velocity data in low-range mode (one velocity profile every 2 min between about 20 and 800 m at 8-m depth bins) and a thermosalinograph gathered salinity and temperature data (every 5 s at a depth of 5 m). The LADCP was attached, together with the CTD, to a 12-liters 24-Niskin-bottle rosette that was used to gather water samples at discrete depths, which were frozen and later analyzed to determine the concentration of inorganic nutrients. In addition, two high-resolution three-dimensional surveys were carried out at the Confluence front with a SeaSoar covering the area between 40.6-39.0°S and 55.6°W-53.8°W. The first transect was completed between the 16 and 17 April, 46 hours covering 620 km, while the second sampled 751 km between the 19 and 21 April 2017, during 52 hours. The SeaSoar was equipped with a SeaBird 911 CTD with the same sensors as in the hydrographic stations, and recorded data in a sawtooth pattern between 5 and 360 m, with a horizontal spacing between apogees of 4 km. Finally, five subsurface drifters, dragged at 100 m, were launched early in the cruise. The cruise was supported by the Spanish Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad through project “Retroflexiones de frontera oeste: conexiones en transportes latitudinales y recirculation de giro en el Océano Atlántico” (VA‐DE‐RETRO, reference number CTM2014‐56987‐P), The cruise was supported by the Spanish Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad through project “Retroflexiones de frontera oeste: conexiones en transportes latitudinales y recirculation de giro en el Océano Atlántico” (VA‐DE‐RETRO, reference number CTM2014‐56987‐P), Peer reviewed

TIC-MOC CRUISE, RV HESPÉRIDES

  • Pelegrí, Josep Lluís
  • CSIC - Unidad de Tecnología Marina (UTM)
TIC-MOC Cruise (29HE20150305) carried out on the Research Vessel Hespérides in 2015, TIC-MOC Tipping Corners in the Meridional Overturning Circulation. The principal objective of the cruise is to characterize the dynamics of the encountering of the Brazil and Malvinas Currents in the Brazil-Malvinas Confluence region. Specific objectives include the characterization of the water masses arriving to the confluence region, the description of the transformations experienced by these water masses , the definition of the frontal systems, the computation of water and property balances, and a description of the principal biogeochemical processes. During the TIC-MOC cruise we will make several stops at specific points (hydrographic stations) to collect data that will allow us to characterize this frontal system. In the hydrographic stations, measurements of physicochemical parameters (speed, temperature, salinity, and turbidity, all depending on the pressure) and biogeochemical (fluorescence, nutrients and dissolved oxygen) will be made. To do this, a rosette will be lowered to the bottom for taking samples of water at 24 depths, together with a CTD (measurements with high vertical resolution of salinity, temperature, dissolved oxygen, fluorescence and turbidity) and LADCP (measurements of the velocity of the Water). The samples of water that we will collect will be used for the determination of inorganic nutrients, microbial respiration, carbon and particulate and dissolved organic nitrogen, particulate and total organic phosphorus

RETRO-ERZ CRUISE, RV HESPÉRIDES

  • Pelegrí, Josep Lluís
  • CSIC - Unidad de Tecnología Marina (UTM)
RETRO-ERZ Cruise (29HE20180426) carried out on the Research Vessel Hespérides in 2018, The main objective of this cruise was to study in detail the area of interaction between the western border current NBC (North Brazil Current) and the zonal current EUC (Equatorial UnderCurrent). Traffic maps acquired from numeric models and dynamic height satellite images helped locate the retroflection of NBC and the origin of the EUC. The region was sampled by the SeaSoar CTD undolutor, CTD + Rosette + LADCP and the microstructure profiler. The dynamic field of the study area was observed through the ADCP, distribution of the currents at 80 meters depth

CANOA08-SUR CRUISE, RV SARMIENTO DE GAMBOA

  • Pelegrí, Josep Lluís
  • CSIC - Unidad de Tecnología Marina (UTM)
CANOA08-SUR Cruise (29SG20081102) carried out on the Research Vessel Sarmiento de Gamboa in 2008, A shallow mesoscale anticyclonic eddy, observed south of the Canary Islands with satellite altimetry, has been intensively studied with multiparametric sampling. The campaign involved multiparametric in situ sampling in the region off NW Africa, from Cadiz to Cape Verde and from the shelf break to the deep ocean: the measurements included hydrographic stations with Conductivity-Temperature-Depth (CTD) casts and water samples from a 24 Niskin-bottle rosette; continuous velocity data down to about 600 m depth with the VM-ADCP; CTD sampling with an undulating Nu-Shuttle platform; and the deployment of drifters drogued at about 100 m depth. These measurements were complemented with remote sensing data (SST and altimetry) for the whole NW Africa region
