MAEC-GAIRE Cruise (29SG20111128) carried out on the Research Vessel Sarmiento de Gamboa in 2011, Geophysical study for the Extension of the Spanish Continental Shelf beyond 200 nautical miles west off Canary Islands & Geophysical study of the undersea active volcano of El Hierro Island. During the MAEC-GAIRE cruise, A total length of 4.471 km. of lines using multichannel seismic reflection, multibeam echo-sounder Atlas HYDROSWEEP DS, echo-sounders SIMRAD EA 600 and EK-60, parametric echo-sounder PARASOUND P-35 and gravimeter along the extended continental shelf of Spain west off Canary Island have been made. In the El Hierro Island a total length of 425 km. of lines using multibeam bathymetry, parametric echo-sounder and gravimeter were acquired, 162.9 km. with multichannel seismic reflection system (SM) and 75.8 km.of high angle seismic refrection

COSTEM-3 Cruise (29GD20110209) carried out on the Research Vessel García del Cid in 2011, The COSTEM project studies the current processes that control the sedimentary dynamics on the external platform, the headwaters of submarine canyons and the upper slope of the continental margin of the Ebro and the Gulf of Valencia. The main objective of the study is to expand the knowledge of the current mechanisms of sediment transport from the platform to the slope, and determine the role played by this system in energy episodes such as heavy storms or the presence of internal waves

OAMMS-5 Cruise (29GD20110326) carried out on the Research Vessel García del Cid in 2011, Observation, Analysis and Modelling of the Mediterranean Sea(OMMS).The main objective is to consolidate a system of observation of the Mediterranean Sea through the real-time measurement of a number of meteorological and oceanographic magnitudes with a moored buoy, complemented by periodic visits with a research vessel to the mooring site and assimilation of the observations obtained in order to carry out the systematic forecasting of sea conditions in the NW Mediterranean Sea.Six-monthly visits from the R/V Garcia del Cid will be performed at the mooring site and at a grid covering parts of the Catalan Sea. On-deck inspection and maintenance of the instrumentation on the buoy will be carried out. The system was equipped with: a. Positional (GPS, ARGOS transmitter) and meteorological sensors (radiation, wind direction and speed -2 units-, air temperature -2 units-, relative humidity and air pressure). b. Sea surface sensor (temperature, salinity) and ADCP downward looking current meter. c. Underwater sensors -2 units- (depth, temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, fluorescence, turbidity, photosynthetic active radiation –PAR-). d. Data logging (Campbell Scientific) and system control. e. transmitting (two-way GSM modem connection) to the shore The proposed research project also aims at consolidating an observational system based on the CEAB multiparametric buoy, equipped with meteorological and oceanographic sensors for real time measurement and transmission to shore of the atmospheric and marine conditions. The buoy will be moored from the B/O García del Cid at a fixed point in the catalan coast, at the head of the Blanes canyon. Automatic observations will be complemented by a series of visits with the CEAB boat to the station where the buoy is moored in order to gather water and plankton samples. At the same time, the present procedure will be improved for the acquisition of water color data (chlorophyll, yellow substance, suspended particles) obtained by the MERIS sensor on board ESA’s ENVISAT satellite. These data offer two levels: 1) real time high spacial resolution files for the western Mediterranean Sea (Levels 1 and 2); and 2) global low to medium spacial resolution (Level 3). The data, together with other historical data also available, will constitute the project database with public access installed in the CEAB server. Limited access will be granted to users in general and, under request, to those with justified scientific or educational interests. A protocol for quality control of the data will be established and followed by statistical analysis in order to provide the models with a sound observational base for their calibration and validation

HERMIONE-I Cruise (29GD20110510) carried out on the Research Vessel García del Cid in 2011, Hotspot Ecosystem Research and Man's Impact on European seas. Contemporary sediment transport processes were measured by an instrumented mooring line equipped with a downward-looking 300 kHz acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP) from Teledyne RDI and three turbidimeters (AQUA logger 520 from the Aquatec Group) deployed from 10 May to 22 September 2011 on the northern flank of La Fonera Canyon, at 980 m depth within the Montgrí tributary valley axis. Seafloor sediment samples from the canyon flanks were collected using a six-tube multicorer from KC-Denmark during the HERMIONE-1 cruise onboard the RV García del Cid

DESMMON-3 Cruise (29GD20110521) carried out on the Research Vessel García del Cid in 2011, The project aims to make a macro-scale description, from the Sea of ​​Alborán to the Catalan Sea, including the Balearic canals, of the main physical, chemical and biological properties throughout a complete seasonal cycle. It includes the distribution of physical properties and identification of different water bodies, as well as inorganic nutrients, dissolved oxygen, chlorophyll, and abundance and taxonomic composition of phytoplankton and zooplankton communities. Particularly innovative within the continental shelf and platform of the Spanish Mediterranean will address the distribution of total inorganic carbon, dissolved organic carbon and particulate matter, methane and nitrous oxide as well as the exchange of greenhouse gases through the ocean- atmosphere and deposition of volatile organic carbon

MEDOUT-11 Cruise (29GD20110712) carried out on the Research Vessel García del Cid in 2011, Tracking the Mediterranean outflow in the Gulf of Cadiz. The region of study was similar to the one sampled during MEDOUT-09 but with increased areal coverage (50 km × 25 km rectangular domain shown in Fig. 2). During the first phase of the cruise, a total of nine zig-zag sections were carried out, crossing the axis of the MOW as determined from the previous MEDOUT-09 measurements; these sections represented 130 full-depth CTD stations. During the second phase of the cruise, additional along- and across-stream sections were carried out, some of them extending further north to cover the slope region, up to a total of 292 additional stations; most of these stations were in tow-yow mode over the outflow water, from about 100 m over the MOW to some 10 m above the seafloor . The CTD data was collected using a Seabird 911Plus System (pressure Seabird 9Plus, temperature Seabird 3Plus, conductivity Seabird 4Plus, oxygen Seabird 43Plus) with all sensors calibrated shortly before the cruise. Velocity data was continuously recorded throughout the cruise with a 75 kHz RDI on-board ADCP, with bottom-tracking enabled; unfortunately, due to bottom interference, the velocity data in the lowermost 50 m of the water column could not be recovered.Bathymetry was also done in the area
