SUPPORTING INFORMATION: EVALUATION OF A MULTICORE-OPTIMIZED IMPLEMENTATION FOR TOMOGRAPHIC RECONSTRUCTION
- Agulleiro, José-Ignacio
- Fernández, José Jesús
Description of the optimization procedure on multicore computers. (left) Flowchart of the optimization procedure. There are two blocks of optimizations. In the first one, the basic optimizations intend to speed up the code on a single CPU core. Then, code modifications to exploit vector processing are made. Going back and forth between the basic optimizations and vectorization is often needed for fine code tuning (e.g. to optimize access to cache memory to read/write data vectors). The second block of optimizations intends to take advantage of the power of the multiple CPU cores available in the computer. The first set of modifications here relies on multithreading, which splits the general problem into tasks that are then mapped and executed in parallel on the different cores. The second set then focuses on disk access optimization, though this step is closely related to the previous one. (right) sketch of a computer architecture based on multicore processors. (bottom-right) Modern computers ship with several multicore chips (typically 2–4) configured to share a centralized memory. Each multicore chip contains several computing CPU cores (2–8) sharing a cache memory (typically the third level, L3). (top-right) Internally, each single CPU core consists of several functional units (FUs) that execute the scheduled micro-instructions. The basic optimizations intend to maximize the use of FUs, minimize the latencies and waiting gaps of micro-instructions, and guarantee an optimum exploitation of cache memory (typically, two levels within the CPU core). One of the FUs is the vector unit, which follows the SIMD execution model shown in Figure 5 of the main text. Vectorization aims to make the most of the vector unit by performing the same operation on data vectors., Tomography allows elucidation of the three-dimensional structure of an object from a set of projection images. In life sciences, electron microscope tomography is providing invaluable information about the cell structure at a resolution of a few nanometres. Here, large images are required to combine wide fields of view with high resolution requirements. The computational complexity of the algorithms along with the large image size then turns tomographic reconstruction into a computationally demanding problem. Traditionally, high-performance computing techniques have been applied to cope with such demands on supercomputers, distributed systems and computer clusters. In the last few years, the trend has turned towards graphics processing units (GPUs). Here we present a detailed description and a thorough evaluation of an alternative approach that relies on exploitation of the power available in modern multicore computers. The combination of single-core code optimization, vector processing, multithreading and efficient disk I/O operations succeeds in providing fast tomographic reconstructions on standard computers. The approach turns out to be competitive with the fastest GPU-based solutions thus far., Peer reviewed

DESIGN MANAGEMENT IN SMES: EXTENDING THE BUNDLE OF DYNAMIC CAPABILITIES
- Fernández-Mesa, Anabel

- Gutiérrez Gracia, Antonio
Trabajo presentado a la International Conference on Organizational Learning Knowledge and Capabilities, celebrada en Valencia (España) del 25 al 27 de Abril de 2012., Although the concept of design management is increasingly important for small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) it is the focus of very few studies. The definition of design management in the literature allows it to be understood as a dynamic capability. This paper investigates this dynamic capability and analyzes its mediating role between organizational learning capability and product innovation. Structural equation modeling was used to test the research hypotheses on a SME data set from the Italian and Spanish ceramic tile industry. The results suggest that organizational learning capability enhances product innovation and that design management capability plays a significant role in determining the effects of organizational learning capability on product innovation., Peer Reviewed

- Ríos, Aida F.

The item is made of 2 files, of which 1 is the dataset and the other include detailed information about measures realized.-- Dataset contributed to the Project Carbochange, This dataset gathers discrete measurements of CO2 (pH and alkalinity) and hydrographic variables (salinity, temperature, dissolved oxygen, nitrate, phosphate and silicate) obtained during the cruise MOC2EQ carried out from 5 April to 16 May 2010.
pH was measured spectrophotometrically following the Clayton and Byrne (1993). This method consists on adding a dye solution to the seawater sample, so that the ratio between two absorbances at two different wavelengths is proportional to the sample pH.
Alkalinity was measured using an automatic potentiometric titrator Titrando 809 Metrohm, with a Metrohm 6.0232.100 combination glass electrode and a Pt-1000 probe for temperature measurement following the methodology given by Pérez and Fraga (1987).
Dissolved oxygen was analyzed following the widely applied Winkler method.
Determinations of nitrate, phosphate and silicate were carried out following methods described by Hansen and Grassoff (1983)
Salinity and Temperature were recorded with a CTD probe, Spanish Projects GHG4MOC (CTM2009-07574-E) and MOC2 (CTM2008-06438-C02-01/MAR) supported by Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación, and CARBOCHANGE (264879), Clivar_A06_2010.exc.csv.-- Report_MOC2EC_2010.pdf.-- Readme_Clivar_A06_2010.txt, Peer reviewed

DATA FROM: DYNAMIC ANTAGONISM BETWEEN PHYTOCHROMES AND PIF-FAMILY BHLHS INDUCES SELECTIVE RECIPROCAL RESPONSES TO LIGHT AND SHADE IN A RAPIDLY RESPONSIVE TRANSCRIPTIONAL NETWORK IN ARABIDOPSIS

Plants respond to shade-modulated light-signals, via the phytochrome (phy) system, by adaptive changes, collectively termed the shade avoidance syndrome (SAS). To examine the roles of the Phy-Interacting bHLH Factors, PIF1, 3, 4 and 5, in relaying this information to the transcriptional network, we compared the genome-wide expression profiles of wild-type and quadruple pif (pifq) mutants in response to shade. The data identify a subset of genes, enriched in transcription-factor-encoding loci, that respond rapidly (within 1 h), in a PIF-dependent manner, to the shade signal, and that contain promoter-located G-box-sequence motifs (CACGTG), known to be preferred PIF binding sites. These genes are thus potential direct targets of phy-PIF signaling that function in the primary transcriptional circuitry controlling downstream response-elaboration. A second subset of PIF-dependent, early-response genes, lacking G-box motifs, are enriched for auxin-responsive loci, suggestive of being indirect targets of phy-PIF signaling involved in the rapid cell-expansion known to be induced by shade. A meta-analysis comparing deetiolation- and shade-responsive transcriptomes identifies a further subset of G-box-containing genes that reciprocally display rapid repression and induction in response to light and shade signals at the inception of deetiolation and shade-avoidance, respectively. Collectively, these data define a core set of transcriptional and hormonal (auxin, cytokinin) processes that appear to be dynamically poised to react rapidly to changes in the light environment via perturbations in the mutually antagonistic actions of the phys and PIFs. Data from comparative analysis of the quadruple pifq and all triple pif-mutant combinations in response to light and shade, confirm that the PIF-quartet members act with overlapping redundancy on seedling morphogenesis and transcriptional regulation, but that the individual PIFs contribute differentially to these responses., Peer reviewed
