POSIDONIA OCEANICA CHANGES IN THE MEDITERRANEAN SEA

  • Marbà, Núria
  • Díaz-Almela, Elena
  • Duarte, Carlos M.
Methodology: We compiled available data published in peer-review articles and grey literature reports until year 2009 as well as our own unpublished data. We searched for data with the engine ISI web of Knowledge, using the keywords Posidonia oceanica AND (regression OR decline OR progression OR recovery OR status OR cartography OR limits OR cover OR density OR biomass OR dynamics), and conducting a back search of cited papers. More information about the methodology to be found at: Calleja, M.L., N. Marbà, C.M. Duarte (2007). The relationship between seagrass (Posidonia oceanica) decline and sulfide porewater concentration in carbonate sediments. Estuarine coastal and shelf science 73: 583-588; Waycott M, CM. Duarte, T.J. B. Carruthers, R.J. Orth, W.C. Dennison, S. Olyarnik, A. Calladine, J.W. Fourqurean, K.L. Heck, Jr, A.R.ll Hughes, G A. Kendrick, W. J Kenworthy, F T. Short, S L. Williams (2009). Accelerating loss of seagrasses across the globe threatens coastal ecosystems. Proceedings of the National Academy of Science USA 106: 12377–12381; Moreno, D., P. A. Aguilera, H. Castro (2001). Assessment of the conservation status of seagrass (Posidonia oceanica) meadows: implications for monitoring strategy and the decision-making process. Biological Conservation 102: 325-332., Content and values displayed: The data set includes general information of the study conducted: the year or period of years of the study, site, country, water depth; and of the seagrass meadow investigated: extent, depth of deep and shallow limit, cover, shoot density, meadow status -decline, expansion, steady-state-, rate of change, Index of Conservation, Moreno et al. 2001) and types of coastal pressures present. The data set includes qualitative and quantitative data, since it contains studies where changes in seagrass meadow extension, cover and /or density are identified from expert judgement as well as studies that quantified the magnitude and rates of the changes reported. The absolute and relative rates of change of seagrass extent, meadow depth limits, cover and shoot density are calculated as described in Marbà et al (submitted). The meadows are categorized as declining (final area < 90% of initial area, net % cover abosolute change < -10, or µ density < -5% yr-1), increasing (final area >110% of initial area, net cover change > 10 % yr-1, or µ density > 5% yr-1) or without detectable change (final area within <90 % of initial area, -10 % yr-1 < net cover change < 10 % yr-1, or -5 % yr-1 < µ density < 5 % yr-1) following Waycott et al (2009) for area and Calleja et al (2007) for density criteria., Access and reuse: This dataset is subject to a Creative Commons Reconocimiento-NoComercial-CompartirIgual 4.0 Internacional License., This dataset compiles qualitative and quantitative information on the stability (i.e. decline, steady state, expansion) of the seagrass (Posidonia oceanica) in the Mediterranean Sea between years 1842 and 2009. Data on meadow extent, shallow and depth limits, cover and shoot density as well as rates of change for the study period are provided. EXPERIMENTAL EXPOSURE OF RED-LEGGED PARTRIDGES (ALECTORIS RUFA) TO SEEDS COATED WITH IMIDACLOPRID, THIRAM AND DIFENOCONAZOLE

  • López-Antia, Ana
  • Ortiz-Santaliestra, Manuel E.
  • Mougeot, François
  • Mateo, Rafael
Three parallel experiments were conducted exposing adult red-legged partridges to seeds treated with one of three pesticide formulations: Score® 25 EC (difenoconazole 25 % w/v), Pormasol® Forte (thiram 80 % w/w), and Escocet® (imidacloprid 35 % w/v). Experiments are designated with the name of the corresponding active ingredient (i.e. difenoconazole, thiram or imidacloprid). Seeds were sprayed to obtain two target concentrations, a low dose corresponding to the one recommended for cereal seed coating, as indicated in product label, and a high dose that was twice the recommended one. Captive-born, 1 year-old red-legged partridges were housed in pairs in outdoor cages and assigned to one of the seven experimental groups (six groups corresponding to the two application doses of each pesticide, plus a control group). Because control group is shared among the three experiment, control records in the dataset appeared by triplicate, with a replicate assigned to each experiment for statistical purposes. Six breeding pairs were exposed to each treatment. On the day of beginning of experiment (March 15th 2010), animals were weighed, tarsus was measured and a blood sample was taken, on which we calculated haematocrit and measured oxidative stress biomarkers (in the cellular fraction), biochemistry, vitamins and carotenoids (in plasma). Body condition was estimated using the scaled mass index of the log-log regression between tarsus length and body weight. During 10 days, partridges were fed exclusively with treated wheat (low and high pesticide exposure groups), or with untreated wheat (control group). At the end of exposure, and 14 days after the end of exposure, we repeated measurements and blood collection and analyses. Prior to and just after pesticide exposure, we took digital photographs under standardized conditions that were analysed with Photoshop to measure the red, carotenoid-based coloration of the beak and eye ring of partridges. We estimated cell-mediated immune responsiveness using the phytohemagglutinin (PHA)-skin test. On the last day of exposure and on day 13 after end of exposure, we measured wing web thickness and injected intradermally the wing web with PHA to stimulate T lymphocyte proliferation and macrophage infiltration. Wing web thickness was measured again 24 h after injection, and the increase in thickness was interpreted as an indicator of cell-mediated immune responsiveness. Humoral immune response was estimated using a haemagglutination test after injecting, 2 days after the end of exposure, an antigen (i.e. sheep red blood cells) that stimulated the synthesis of specific antibodies. Serial dilutions of plasma of blood collected at the end of exposure (before SRBC injection) and 14 days later (12 days after antigen injection) were used in agglutination tests of RBC taken from the same sheep whose RBCs had been injected to partridges. Once exposure ended, partridges were kept in the cages and fed ad libitum with commercial, non-treated food. Because some birds died during the experiments, partridges that were alone in the cages were paired again with mates exposed to the same treatment (when possible). Eggs were picked up, measured (maximum length and width, and mass) identified individually and incubated until hatching. Birth date, as well as tarsus length and body weight of hatchling was recorded. Chicks were individually marked and housed in closed rooms in optimal conditions. We measured (tarsus length) and weighed all chicks upon 8, 16, 24 and 32 days of age, and calculated their body condition as for adults. Unhatched eggs were opened and examined to see whether they were fecundated or not. Shell thickness of hatched and unhatched eggs was measured in the equatorial region after separation of the inner membrane and drying., This dataset includes data collected in three parallel experiments conducted to analyse the effects of ingestion of seeds treated with difenoconazole, imidacloprid or thiram on several aspects of adult red-legged partridges (Alectoris rufa) as well as on parameters measured in eggs laid by exposed partridges an in chicks hatching from those eggs. The dataset shows individual measures corresponding to each parameter., FEDENCA (Real Federación Española de Caza). Oficina Nacional de la Caza. Fundación Biodiversidad. DETSUFA Cruise (29HE20130304) carried out on the Research Vessel Hespérides in 2013, The objectives of the DETSUFA cruise (BIO Hespérides 04/03–17/03/2013) are (1) to evaluate the footprint in the seafloor of a series of earthquake-generated subaerial landslides that took place in Fiordo de Aysén, Chile, in 2007, which entered the seawater generating a number of destructive tsunamis which killed 10 and produced significant damage in the local infrastructure, (2) to reconstruct the morphology and dynamics of these landslides in order to obtain input data for tsunami modelling, and (3) to determine the occurrence of similar episodes in the past that might have generated other tsunamis, in order to establish a possible recurrence period of such events. The cruise fits within the global scientific interest stirred up by tsunamis in general, being the Fiordo de Aysén a highly relevant analogue for the understanding of this kind of events occurring in semi-enclosed basins such as fjords, lakes or water dams, which often harbour large human population and infrastructures

FICARAM-XV Cruise (29HE20130320) carried out on the Research Vessel Hespérides in 2013, FICARAM cruise aims to investigate the evolution of decadal anthropogenic carbon and to evaluate the CO2 uptake capacity in the sector South Atlantic Ocean and its spread to Ecuador and Nord-tropical zone. Another important component of FICARAM cruise aims examine the biological and biogeochemical mechanisms that hinder total dissolved organic carbon (DOC) remineralisation in marine systems, taking a multidisciplinary perspective and applying many different approaches. This objective is the global objective of the Spanish project DOREMI that join this FICARAM cruise. Along the section, the DOREMI project will test the effect of different factors (carbon and nutrient additions, and microbial structure) on DOC degradation in epipelagic, mesopelagic and deep waters, developing some experiments determining the potential degradability of mesopelagic and epipelagic DOM, and the role that labile C supplements plays regulating this process and by the microbial structure

SUBVENT-1 CRUISE, RV HESPÉRIDES

  • CSIC - Unidad de Tecnología Marina (UTM)
SUBVENT-1 Cruise (29HE20130921) carried out on the Research Vessel Hespérides in 2013, The objective of the SUBVENT-1 cruise is to investigate the evidence of emissions from fluids detected west of the Canary Islands, in the deep zone of the continental margin, where possible acoustic feathers that could have been identified generated by underwater emissions of fluids. The SUBVENT1-0913 cruise has been carried out along the lower slope of the continental margin of the Canary Islands. This area is characterized by the presence of several recent geological structures. Among these are the distal parts of the volcanoclastics debris deposits originated by volcanic avalanches of the Canary Islands, transported by gravity along the slope and probably related in origin to eruptive episodes. In the southern part, numerous and different reliefs (seamounts, hills or mounds) of volcanic origin occur. The most frequents features display heights between 30 and 300 m and they have constituted one of the main aims of this survey. Moreover, in this sector there are several subparallel linear scarps with similar directions to the slope trend that could be associated with the aforementioned mounds. The acquisition of new geophysical data and samples during this cruise will allow a better understanding of the origin of these mounds and the emission processes that have generated them. On the other hand, the knowledge of the relationships between debris and hemipelagic sediments together with those associated with possible venting processes in the area, will reveal not only the sedimentary evolution of this margin, but also to establish emission episodes generating mounds and to know their growth patterns. Furthermore, it would be possible to evaluate the sedimentation rate in the area and the role played by the Antarctic Bottom Water (AABW) mass on this process
