ABIDES-ROV CRUISE, RV SARMIENTO DE GAMBOA

  • CSIC - Unidad de Tecnología Marina (UTM)
ABIDES-ROV Cruise (29SG20170905) carried out on the Research Vessel Sarmiento de Gamboa in 2017, The ABIDES (Assessment of Bottom-trawling Impacts in DEep-sea Sediments) project focuses on the study of contemporary sedimentary processes associated to the impact of bottom trawling activities on the deep seafloor. The disturbance of deep-sea environments caused by this fishing practice is considered to be notably higher than all other anthropogenic pressures combined, given its intensity, recurrence and wide geographical distribution. Although the impacts of trawling on coastal and shelf environments have been investigated in the past from the sedimentary point of view, up to date, very few studies have addressed the role of this fishing practice on slope environments, where background energy levels controlling natural sedimentary processes are generally low and where the associated benthic ecosystems are less resilient and more vulnerable. Therefore, the main goal of the ABIDES project is to improve our knowledge of the contemporary sediment erosion, transport and accumulation processes driven by this anthropogenic activity, with the aim to assess the magnitude of the associated impacts in continental slope environments and to provide support for mitigation efforts towards the development of sustainable fisheries. During the ABIDES-ROV cruise we have conducted a morphological and seabed habitat characterization of the continental slope regions that have (and have not) been intensively trawled during decades, both at small- and large-scale with the aim to evaluate the “seafloor integrity”. The main study area has been the NW Mediterranean continental margin, where a bottom trawling fishery has been operating for decades and a good knowledge of the current bottom-trawling footprint exists. ROV footage has been used to determine the small-scale morphological changes and the impact caused by trawling gear on the seafloor habitats through direct visual observations; and detailed multibeam bathymetric mapping will be used to identify large-scale morphological changes caused by persistent trawling activities over major fishing grounds of the study area

FAUCES-1 Cruise (29SG20170925) carried out on the Research Vessel Sarmiento de Gamboa in 2017, The FAUCES-1 cruise is an activity carried out within the framework of the Spanish project entitled “Fauces” (CTM2015-65461-C2-R). The project addresses the study of marine geological hazards, with special emphasis on sedimentary instabilities associated with three submarine canyons located on the Mediterranean continental margins of southern Iberia (Palomares and Alboran margins). During the cruise will acquire data in specific areas along the submarine canyons axis and margins (Almanzora-Alías-Garrucha canyon head on the continental margin of Palomares, and the La Linea and Guadiaro canyon heads on the Alboran margin) with the aim of fit into the main objectives of the project: 1) to determine the geomorphology and geological evolution of the canyons, during the Quaternary, their processes and controlling factors; 2) to analyze the slope-stability of canyon heads by means of sedimentary and geotechnical characterizations; and 3) to establish the key elements and geological processes that can represent a potential hazard

FLUXES-2 CRUISE, RV SARMIENTO DE GAMBOA

  • Arístegui, Javier
  • CSIC - Unidad de Tecnología Marina (UTM)
FLUXES-2 Cruise (29SG20171102) carried out on the Research Vessel Sarmiento de Gamboa in 2017, The main goal of FLUXES is to quantify the relevance of labile and semi-labile dissolved (DOC) and suspended (POCs) organic carbon (i.e. non-sinking organic carbon) in the context of the biological pump (BP), in Eastern Boundary Upwelling Ecosystems (EBUE). The Cape Blanc region (NW Africa), characterized by a rich mesoscale variability resulting from the interaction of the upwelling system and the Cape Verde Frontal Zone that built up the Giant Filament, will be used as a case study. We want to test the hypothesis that offshore lateral advection of POCs, as well as secondary circulation at the submesoscale range and vertical mixing of DOC and POCs, contribute significantly to the export of organic carbon in EBUE. If we were correct, our results will invite reconsideration of regional and global models of the carbon cycle, including the non-sinking carbon as a major pool and flux. We presume also that the project will help to clarify some uncertainties and paradoxes on the imbalance between sources and sinks of carbon in the global ocean. We aim to address the coupled dynamics between food-web diversity and function, in relation to the hydrographic and chemical environment in distinct deep-water masses, the origin and composition of DOC and POCs and their contribution to remineralization rates in the dark ocean. The level of complexity of this project in terms of fieldwork activities, logistics and interdisciplinary science (combining physical oceanography, biogeochemistry, and biological oceanography) will require the coordination of several research groups with a proven record of experience and skills in their respective fields of knowledge, that have been collaborating for more than a decade in the coupling between physical processes, plankton community structure and metabolism, and carbon biogeochemistry in the Canary Current EBUE

Provided datasets correspond to the supplementary material generated for Perez RF et al (2018)., Distinct chromatin signatures of DNA hypomethylation in aging and cancer. Raúl F, Pérez et al. (DOI: 10.1111/acel.12744), Cancer is an aging-associated disease but the underlying molecular links between these processes are still largely unknown. Gene promoters that become hypermethylated in aging and cancer share a common chromatin signature in ES cells. In addition, there is also global DNA hypomethylation in both processes. However, any similarities of the regions where this loss of DNA methylation occurs is currently not well characterized, nor is it known whether such regions also share a common chromatin signature in aging and cancer. To address this issue we analysed TCGA DNA methylation data from a total of 2,311 samples, including control and cancer cases from patients with breast, kidney, thyroid, skin, brain and lung tumors and healthy blood, and integrated the results with histone, chromatin state and transcription factor binding site data from the NIH Roadmap Epigenomics and ENCODE projects. We identified 98,857 CpG sites differentially methylated in aging, and 286,746 in cancer. Hyper- and hypomethylated changes in both processes each had a similar genomic distribution across tissues and displayed tissue-independent alterations. The identified hypermethylated regions in aging and cancer shared a similar bivalent chromatin signature. In contrast, hypomethylated DNA sequences occurred in very different chromatin contexts. DNA hypomethylated sequences were enriched at genomic regions marked with the activating histone posttranslational modification H3K4me1 in aging, whilst in cancer, loss of DNA methylation was primarily associated with the repressive H3K9me3 mark., Peer reviewed

WINFISH-1_LEG2 CRUISE, RV GARCÍA DEL CID

  • Sabatés, Ana
  • CSIC - Unidad de Tecnología Marina (UTM)
WINFISH-1_LEG2 Cruise (29GD20170301) carried out on the Research Vessel García del Cid in 2017, To study the influence of the change in the oceanographic conditions generated by the nothern component storms on the spawning of species that reproduce in cold waters. The Gulf of Leon, in the northwestern Mediterranean, is a well-known region where open sea convection processes result in deep water formation due to heat loss during the winter and the evaporation caused for cold and dry winds from the north. Fluctuations in the intensity of this phenomenon are related to the interannual variability and spatial extension of phytoplankton bloom and zooplankton production, feed of fish larvae. Suitable conditions for the development and survival of larvae (high concentrations of food and shelter of their predators) determine subsequent rates of recruitment of fish. The main objective of this project is to elucidate how the environmental conditions associated with the formation of deep water and the vertical mix in winter in the northwestern Mediterranean determine the success of the posting and subsequent recruitment of fish. Two species have been selected: the blue whiting, Micromesistius poutassou, and sardine, Sardina pilchardus, which reproduce in winter in open sea and continental shelf, respectively. Both are abundant, of high commercial interest, and there are historical series of their captures. The specific objectives of the project are: 1) In situ characterization of the environmental conditions in the winter peak, on the platform and in the open sea, after the deep water formation episodes (February-March), and remote monitoring of the evolution of the later phytoplankton bloom; 2) On-site determination of the abundance and distribution (horizontal and vertical) of fish eggs and larvae of target species and other species of fish that are reproduced in the same period; 3) Determination of the trophic interactions between the fish larvae of the target species and the associated planktonic communities under the influence of physical processes. 4) Establish when recruitment of target species takes place and its intensity in relation to winter episodes, the evolution of phytoplankton bloom and the progression of the demographic structure in the following months. 5) Definition of environmental indicators of the cause-effect relationship that explain the interannual variability of the recruitment of the target species and allow the prediction of the catches. The project addresses a multidisciplinary approach and integrates different fields of marine research, physical oceanography, plankton ecology and fisheries
