https://surfmoss.iqf.csic.es/en/2013-04-02-10-34-02/manuals-howtos/90-vector-xcmd-peem-spleem, We present the in situ modification of the magnetocrystalline anisotropy of iron-rich cobalt-ferrite epitaxial islands by changing their composition. Crystalline cobalt-ferrite spinel islands have been grown by oxygen-assisted molecular beam epitaxy on a Ru(0001) single crystal. The micro-crystals are several micrometers wide with heights of tens of nanometers. Their spatially-resolved vector magnetization is mapped by x-ray magnetic circular dichroism in photoemission microscopy at the L3 absorption edges of Co and Fe. Thick islands present a closure-like magnetic domain structure with the magnetization directions predominantly aligned along the projections of the easy magnetic axes onto the (111) surface plane. Thinner islands are more affected by growth defects and present a more complex domain structure. Upon deposition of additional Fe in an oxygen background pressure, Co is found to segregate out of the spinel islands, while their Fe content increases. This produces a reduction in the magnetocrystalline anisotropy, which manifests as a reorientation of the magnetization directions towards the edges of the islands, reflecting an increased contribution of the shape anisotropy, AMADEUS PID2021-124585NB-C31, PID2021-124585NB-C32), Nanobond (TED2021-130196B-C22, TED2021-130957B-C54), PID2020-117024GB-C43, TED2021-130957B-C54., File List: - Characterization of as-grown sample - XAS PEEM Images: Fe, Co, O folders - XAS XMCD Images at 0, 60, and 120 degrees azimuthal rotation: Fe - Growth sequence of LEEM images - Characterization of modified sample - XAS PEEM Images: Fe, Co - XAS XMCD Images at 0, 60, 120 degrees azimuthal rotation: Fe, Co - Micromagnetic simulations - Input files - Auxiliary data - Calibration of counts vs. Channel plates voltage - Logbook of experiments, Peer reviewed

Supplementary Information: Supplementary Figures 1–4, Supplementary Table 2., Supplementary Table 1: Flow cytometry data used in co-fluorescence tests., Supplementary Video 1: NTA of purified VSV virions untreated. Each dot is the light scattered by an individual VSV particle. NTA uses Brownian motion to infer particle size. Particles flow from left to right because they were pumped by a syringe. This translation movement is discarded for particle size inference. Light intensity increases with particle size, but depends also on the position of the particles in the diluent column (distance to lens) and hence is not used for size inference., Supplementary Video 2: NTA of purified VSV virions incubated 1 h at 37 °C. Microsatellite dataset of 1765 Annona cherimola DNA samples
A total of 1765 A. cherimola DNA samples collected in the highlands of Guatemala, Honduras, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia geopositioned in decimal degrees were analyzed with 9 selected microsatellite loci. Those microsatellites were previously shown to be highly informative in A. cherimola (Escribano et al. 2008; van Zonneveld et al. 2012): LMCH1, LMCH4, LMCH16, LMCH48, LMCH69, LMCH87, LMCH122, LMCH139 and LMCH144.
A_cherimola_Larranaga_et_al_2017.csv, Knowledge on the structure and distribution of genetic diversity is a key aspect in order to plan and execute an efficient conservation and utilization of the genetic resources of any crop as well as for determining historical demographic inferences. In this work, a large data set of 1765 accessions of cherimoya (Annona cherimola Mill, Annonaceae), an underutilized fruit tree crop native to the neotropics and used as a food source by pre-Columbian cultures, was collected from 6 different countries across the American continent and amplified with 9 highly informative microsatellite markers. The structure analyses, fine representation of the genetic diversity and an ABC approach suggest a Mesoamerican origin of the crop, contrary to previous reports, with clear implications for the dispersion of plant germplasm between Central and South America in pre-Columbian times. These results together with the potential distribution of the species in a climatic change context using two different climate models provide new insights for the history and conservation of extant genetic resources of cherimoya that can be applied to other currently underutilized woody perennial crops., Peer reviewed

DATA FROM: ON THE INCONSISTENCY OF POLLINATOR SPECIES TRAITS FOR PREDICTING EITHER RESPONSE TO LAND-USE CHANGE OR FUNCTIONAL CONTRIBUTION
- Bartomeus, Ignasi
- Cariveau, Daniel P.
- Harrison, Tina
- Winfree, Rachael
The response and effect trait framework, if supported empirically, would provide for powerful and general predictions about how biodiversity loss leads to loss in ecosystem function. This framework proposes that species traits will explain how different species respond to disturbance (i.e. response traits) as well as their contribution to ecosystem function (i.e. effect traits). However, predictive response and effect traits remain elusive for most systems. Here, we use data on crop pollination services provided by native, wild bees to explore the role of six commonly used species traits in determining both species' response to land-use change and the subsequent effect on crop pollination. Analyses were conducted in parallel for three crop systems (watermelon, cranberry, and blueberry) located within the same geographical region (mid-Atlantic USA). Bee species traits did not strongly predict species' response to land-use change, and the few traits that were weakly predictive were not consistent across crops. Similarly, no trait predicted species' overall functional contribution in any of the three crop systems, although body size was a good predictor of per capita efficiency in two systems. Overall we were unable to make generalizable predictions regarding species responses to land-use change and its effect on the delivery of crop pollination services. Pollinator traits may be useful for understanding ecological processes in some systems, but thus far the promise of traits-based ecology has yet to be fulfilled for pollination ecology., Peer reviewed

INFLUENCE OF THE LOOP SIZE AND NUCLEOTIDE COMPOSITION ON AGOSHRNA BIOGENESIS AND ACTIVITY [DATASET]
- Herrera, Elena
- Harwig, Alex
- Berkhout, Ben
Short hairpin RNAs (shRNAs) are widely used for gene silencing by the RNA interference (RNAi) mechanism. The shRNA precursor is processed by the Dicer enzyme into active small interfering RNAs (siRNAs) that subsequently target a complementary mRNA for cleavage by the Argonaute 2 (Ago2) complex. Recent evidence indicates that shRNAs with a relatively short basepaired stem bypass Dicer and are instead processed by Ago2. We termed these molecules AgoshRNAs as both processing and silencing steps are mediated by Ago2 and proposed rules for the design of effective AgoshRNA molecules. Active and non-cytotoxic AgoshRNAs against HIV-1 RNA were generated, but their silencing activity was generally reduced compared with the matching shRNAs. Thus, further optimization of the AgoshRNA design is needed. In this study, we evaluated the importance of the single-stranded loop, in particular its size and nucleotide sequence, in AgoshRNA-mediated silencing. We document that the pyrimidine/purine content is important for AgoshRNA-mediated silencing activity., Peer reviewed
