This dataset compiles information obtained during the cruise RETRO-BMC. A companion dataset includes additional information obtained using high-frequency profiling floats and a high-resolution microstructure profiler. The "readme file" contains a description of the different folders and archives, The RETRO-BMC oceanographic cruise was designed to characterize the spatial structures and variability of the Brazil-Malvinas Confluence (BMC) region. The cruise was carried in April 2017 on board the R/V Hespérides, departing from Ushuaia (Argentina) and arriving to Santos (Brazil). There were a total of 33 hydrographic stations, carried out between 13 and 25 April 2017. All stations were offshore from the continental platform and within 42ºS-36ºS and 58ºW-52ºW. Conductivity-temperature-depth (CTD) data were obtained with a SeaBird 911 Plus multi-parametric probe, with redundant salinity and temperature sensors, and additional dissolved oxygen (SBE-43) and fluorescence and turbidity (Wetlabs AFL-NTU-RTD) sensors. Water velocity data was obtained at the stations with a lowered acoustic Doppler current profiler (LADCP) and along the ship’s track with the vessel-mounted ADCP (VADCP). During the entire ship’s track inside the study region, the VADCP gathered velocity data in low-range mode (one velocity profile every 2 min between about 20 and 800 m at 8-m depth bins) and a thermosalinograph gathered salinity and temperature data (every 5 s at a depth of 5 m). The LADCP was attached, together with the CTD, to a 12-liters 24-Niskin-bottle rosette that was used to gather water samples at discrete depths, which were frozen and later analyzed to determine the concentration of inorganic nutrients. In addition, two high-resolution three-dimensional surveys were carried out at the Confluence front with a SeaSoar covering the area between 40.6-39.0°S and 55.6°W-53.8°W. The first transect was completed between the 16 and 17 April, 46 hours covering 620 km, while the second sampled 751 km between the 19 and 21 April 2017, during 52 hours. The SeaSoar was equipped with a SeaBird 911 CTD with the same sensors as in the hydrographic stations, and recorded data in a sawtooth pattern between 5 and 360 m, with a horizontal spacing between apogees of 4 km. Finally, five subsurface drifters, dragged at 100 m, were launched early in the cruise. The cruise was supported by the Spanish Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad through project “Retroflexiones de frontera oeste: conexiones en transportes latitudinales y recirculation de giro en el Océano Atlántico” (VA‐DE‐RETRO, reference number CTM2014‐56987‐P), The cruise was supported by the Spanish Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad through project “Retroflexiones de frontera oeste: conexiones en transportes latitudinales y recirculation de giro en el Océano Atlántico” (VA‐DE‐RETRO, reference number CTM2014‐56987‐P), Peer reviewed

The data provided in the included folders are results directly taken from simulations originating from COMSOL multiphysics. All data are provided as text files. Each text file includes coordinate data and the raw values for the variable of interest presented in the manuscript and supporting information. The files provided are separated into folders for homogeneous equivalent cases and heterogeneous cases. For each of these folders, the data is further subdivided by the variance of the hydraulic conductivity field. Finally, the data is organiyed according to the output variable of interest., The data provided in the included folders are results directly taken from simulations originating from COMSOL multiphysics., Peer reviewed

REGIONAL CENTROID MOMENT TENSORS FOR EARTHQUAKES IN THE 2013 CASTOR GAS STORAGE SEISMIC CRISIS

  • Villaseñor, Antonio
  • Herrmann, Robert B.
  • Gaite, Beatriz
  • Ugalde, Arantza
The dataset consists of 14 directories, one for each earthquake analyzed, including raw data and results. A README.txt file describes the contents of the directories., Data files and modelling results of regional centroid moment tensors obtained for earthquakes in the 2013 CASTOR gas storage seismic crisis, and presented in the article "Fault reactivation by gas injection at an underground gas storage off the east coast of Spain”, by Antonio Villaseñor et al. During September-October of 2013 an intense swarm of earthquakes occurred off the east coast of Spain associated with the injection of the base gas in an offshore underground gas storage. Two weeks after the end of the injection operations, three moderate-sized earthquakes (Mw 4.0-4.1) occurred near the storage. These events were widely felt by the nearby population, leading to the indefinite shut-down of the facility. Here we investigate the source parameters (focal depth and mechanism) of the largest earthquakes in the sequence in order to identify the faults reactivated by the gas injection, and to help understand the processes that caused the earthquakes. Our waveform modeling results indicate that the largest earthquakes occurred at depths of 6-8 km beneath the sea floor, significantly deeper than the injection depth (~ 1800 m). Although we cannot undoubtedly discriminate the fault plane from the two nodal planes of the mechanisms, most evidence seems to favor a NW-SE striking fault plane. We propose that the gas injection reactivated unmapped faults in the Paleozoic basement, with regional orientation possibly inherited from the opening of the Valencia Trough., We thank the seismic networks that provided the waveform data used in this study: IGN 295 (https://doi.org/10.7914/SN/ES), and ICGC (https://doi.org/10.7914/SN/CA).
