This study compares the distribution of bulk soil organic carbon (SOC), its fractions (unprotected and physically, chemically, and biochemically protected), available phosphorusCE1 (Pavail TS4), organic nitrogen(Norg), and stable isotope ( 15N and 13C) signatures at four soil depths (0–10, 10–20, 20–30, and 30–40 cm) between a nearby open forest reference area and a historical olive orchard (established in 1856) located in southern Spain. In addition, these soil properties, as well as water stable aggregates (Wsagg), were contrasted at eroding and deposition areas within the olive orchard, previously determined using 137Cs. SOC stock in the olive orchard (about 40 t C ha1) was only 25% of that in the forested area (about 160 tC ha1) in the upper 40 cm of soil, and the reduction was especially severe in the unprotected organic carbon. The reference and the orchard soils also showed significant differences in the 13C and 15N signals, likely due to the different vegetation composition and N dynamics in both areas. Soil properties along a catena, from erosion to deposition areas within the old olive orchard, showed large differences. Soil Corg, Pavail and Norg content, and 15N at the deposition were significantly higher than those of the erosion area, defining two distinct areas with a different soil quality status. These overall results indicate that the proper understanding of Corg content and soil quality in olive orchards requires the consideration of the spatial variability induced by erosion–deposition processes for a convenient appraisal at the farm scale., Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness (grant no. Dataset of the paper: Does social thermal regulation constrain individual thermal tolerance in an ant species? (authors: Irene Villalta, Cristela Sánchez Oms, Elena Angulo, Carlos R. Molinas-González, Séverine Devers, Xim Cerdá, Raphaël Boulay) accepted in Journal of Animal Ecology.
Microsoft Excel file including a total of 12 datasheets (activity, foraging temperature, reaction norms, lethal temperature, pitfall catches, demography, morphological data) and 1 sheet with comments about data., [EN]1. In ants, social thermal regulation is the collective maintenance of a nest temperature that is optimal for individual colony members. In the thermophilic ant Aphaenogaster iberica, two key behaviours regulate nest temperature: seasonal nest relocation and variable nest depth. Outside the nest, foragers must adapt their activity to avoid temperatures that exceed their thermal limits.
2. It has been suggested that social thermal regulation constrains physiological and morphological thermal adaptations at the individual level. We tested this hypothesis by examining the foraging rhythms of six populations of A. iberica, which were found at different elevations (from 100 to 2000 m) in the Sierra Nevada mountain range of southern Spain. We tested the thermal resistance of individuals from these populations under controlled conditions.
3. Janzen's climatic variability hypothesis (CVH) states that greater climatic variability should select for organisms with broader temperature tolerances. We found that the A. iberica population at 1300 m experienced the most extreme temperatures and that ants from this population had the highest heat tolerance (LT50 = 57.55ºC). These results support CVH’s validity at microclimatic scales, such as the one represented by the elevational gradient in this study.
4. A. iberica maintains colony food intake levels across different elevations and mean daily temperatures by shifting its rhythm of activity.
5. This efficient colony-level thermal regulation and the significant differences in individual heat tolerance that we observed among the populations suggest that behaviourally controlled thermal regulation does not constrain individual physiological adaptations for coping with extreme temperatures, [ES]1.
