NUMBER OF UNDERWAY VESSELS IN THE WESTERN MEDITERRANEAN (2016/01-2020/06)

  • March, David
Terrestrial AIS (T-AIS) data from the Western Mediterranean (map inset Fig 5a) were collated by the Balearic Islands Coastal and Forecasting System (SOCIB) using a real-time operational system connected to a web-service provided by MarineTraffic (https://www.marinetraffic.com/). The database used in this study contained AIS data from 1st January 2016 until 30th June 2020 at 5 minute intervals (> 545 million AIS messages). In addition to the vessel tracks, the database also included information associated with each vessel, such as the vessel type or length. A first pre-processing of the raw data included the removal of duplicates, invalid identification numbers (i.e. Maritime Mobile Service Identity -MMSI- codes without 9 digits) and codes outside the correct numerical range (i.e. MMSI codes with first digits between 2 and 7 are those intended for individual ships). In order to address inconsistencies in the vessel and MMSI combinations (e.g., changes of MMSI across years), we selected the more frequent combination of MMSI and vessel characteristics (e.g. vessel name and vessel type) for each calendar year. We used a similar vessel categorization as the S-AIS dataset, but were able to derive a sixth category from the AIS metadata, separating “recreational” vessels from “other” vessels. Therefore, vessels were classified into six categories: cargo, tanker, passenger (included high speed crafts and passenger vessels), fishing, recreational (included sailing vessels and pleasure crafts), and others (included all other ship types). We excluded ship type codes 20 to 29 (i.e. wing-in-ground-effect and search and rescue aircraft), as well as codes that had an invalid value (i.e. empty or null) or the value was not listed in the previous type codes. We calculated the number of vessels per day taking into account only those that were underway, thus removing moored vessels inside ports that were inactive. T-AIS coverage was not homogenous in the study area (Holmes et al. 2020) due to a non-uniformly distribution of antennas (i.e. few antennas in north Africa, see www.marinetraffic.com). Based on a previous analysis of the AIS coverage (Holmes et al 2020), we filtered vessels within the coastal zone (44.4 km, ~24 nautical miles) of EU countries (i.e. a total area of 164,318.2 km2 comprised by Spain, France and Italy), thus reducing potential bias due to temporal gaps in signal reception.

RADMED–ESMARES‐0620 CRUISE, RV GARCÍA DEL CID

  • Martínez-García, María del Carmen
  • CSIC - Unidad de Tecnología Marina (UTM)
RADMED-ESMARES-0620 Cruise (29GD20200623) carried out on the Research Vessel García del Cid in 2020, The RADMED-ESMARES-0620 project has as its general objective the multidisciplinary monitoring of shelf waters and continental slope of the Spanish Mediterranean, including both the peninsular coastline as the Balearic Islands. The variables to follow are physical, chemical and biological, thereby seeking to study hydrographic conditions, communities planktonic, the seasonal cycles of these variables and their interannual variability. This Tracking allows us to implement our data banks, generate time series, establish ocean climatologies, study oscillations, trends, anomalies and their relationship with global warming and climate change. With these data we have accurate information of the marine environment, being able to advise administrations on the correct management of the effects of climate change

POWELL-2020 CRUISE, RV HESPÉRIDES

  • Escutia, Carlota
  • CSIC - Unidad de Tecnología Marina (UTM)
POWELL-2020 Cruise (29HE20200109) carried out on the Research Vessel Hespérides in 2020, The main goal of the POWELL: Is targets the Powell Basin and the South Orkney Microcontinent (SOM) where there is very little information. However, to understand their deep structure is key in the development of the southern Scotia oceanic basins. The proposed cruise includes collection of data to be related with ODP site 696, which is studies in the frame of TASDRACC project. Site 696 will allow to better understand the timing of the events recorded in the seismic profiles and the seismic data will allow us to extend regionally the results obtained from site 696, to the SOM, the Powell Basin and the southern continental margin of the Drake Passage. In this cruise we are expecting to collect: 1) EM122 multi beam bathymetry data; 2) parametric echo-sounder (TOPAS) profiles, 3) multichannel seismic reflection profiles, 4) magnetic data, 5) gravimetric data, 6) gravity cores, and 7) CTDs

BRAVOSEIS-3 CRUISE, RV HESPÉRIDES

  • Almendros, Francisco Javier
  • CSIC - Unidad de Tecnología Marina (UTM)
BRAVOSEIS-3 Cruise (29HE20200207) carried out on the Research Vessel Hespérides in 2020, The BRAVOSEIS project investigates the geodynamic environment, structure and dynamics of submarine volcanoes in the Bransfield Strait, Antarctica. It is based on the analysis of tectonic and volcanic earthquakes recorded by a dense, amphybious seismic network composed of broadband seismometers, OBS, and hydrophones, deployed between 2018 and 2020. Aditionally, we perform marine seismology and geophysics profiles across the rift and main volcanic zones. The recorded data will be analyzed using state of the art techniques to understand the crustal structure and tectonic regime in the South Shetland Islands region and elucidate among competing theories, to image the location and extent of magmatic reservoirs, and to address the current activity of submarine volcanic centers along the Bransfield Rift

RESNEP-2_LEG2 CRUISE, RV SARMIENTO DE GAMBOA

  • Company, Joan B.
  • CSIC - Unidad de Tecnología Marina (UTM)
RESNEP-2_LEG2 Cruise (29SG20200201) carried out on the Research Vessel Sarmiento de Gamboa in 2020, The main goal of the RESNEP scientific project is to study the use of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) as a tool for the recovery of the marine popultion of species of fishery interest. The target species is the Norway lobster, Nephrops norvegicus, an iconic fishery along the Spanish Mediterranean coast but at present with populations in overexploited status. The oceanographic cruise RESNEP 2 is on board the R/V Sarmiento de Gamboa. The main oceanographic operations are ROV dive and the use of traps for the biomass evaluation of the Norway lobster. The studied MPA (or no-take fishery zone) was established in September of 2017 so this oceanographic cruise is doing its research 2 years after the regular fishery activity was banned
