CLIMATIC BREADTH OF CALLING BEHAVIOUR IN TWO WIDESPREAD NEOTROPICAL FROGS: INSIGHTS FROM HUMIDITY EXTREMES

Climate change is severely altering precipitation regimes at local and global scales, yet the capacity of species to cope with these changes has been insufficiently examined. Amphibians are globally endangered and particularly sensitive to moisture conditions. For mating, most amphibian species rely on calling behaviour, which is a key weather- dependent trait. Using passive acoustics, we monitored the calling behaviour of two widely distributed Neotropical frogs in 12 populations located at the humidity extremes but thermal mean of the species distribution. Based on 2,554 hours of recordings over a breeding season, we found that both the arboreal species Boana raniceps and the aquatic species Pseudis paradoxa exhibited calling behaviour at a wide range of relative humidity. Calling humidity was significantly lower in conspecific populations subjected to drier conditions, while calling temperature did not differ between populations or species. Overall, no variation in climatic breadth was observed between large and small choruses, and calling behaviour was scarcely detected during the driest, hottest and coldest potential periods of breeding. Our results showed that calling humidity of the studied species varies according to the precipitation regime, suggesting that widespread Neotropical anurans may have the capacity to exhibit sexual displays in different climatic environments. Regardless of the underlying mechanism (plasticity or local adaptation), which should be determined by common garden experiments, a wide and population-specific climatic breadth of calling behaviour may assist species to deal with changing humidity conditions. To our knowledge, this is the first study to explore the response capacity of anurans to perform calling behaviour under contrasting precipitation regimes.

ACOUSTIC IMPULSE RESPONSE FOR THE DETECTION OF INTERNAL QUALITY IN SEEDLESS WATERMELON

  • Diezma Iglesias, Belén
  • Barreiro Elorza, Pilar
  • Ruiz Altisent, Margarita

Recent commercialisation of seedless watermelon varieties relies on the guarantee of a high quality product. Several internal defects may deteriorate greatly this fruit: (a) creases and/or large voids in the flesh, (b) overripeness and (c) bruises due to impact. The objective of this research was to develop a feasible non-destructive procedure for detecting these defects in individual fruits, based on acoustic impulse response.

A device consisting of a microphone, structural elements and a mechanical impact generator was designed and tested. Good and defective seedless watermelons were tested with the acoustic device. Spectral parameters were examined as potential non-destructive predictors of internal disorders. Waveband magnitude parameters, obtained by summing the magnitude of the spectrum between two frequencies in a specified band width (always including between 40 and 500 Hz), were the acoustic parameters showing the best ability to detect internal disorders.

Dataset description

The acoustic response of 158 watermelons measured by hitting the fruit with an impactor and detecting the output sound by a microphone on the opposite side and 90º (as referred in derived publication and PhD thesis, see further details in this file)

Metodology

Each watermelon was acoustically excited on two positions, both around the equator and rotated 908. Nine measurements, divided in groups of three repetitions for the same location, together with three locations were performed at each position, therefore 18 measurements in each fruit. Positions identify the different areas of fruit where the impact is applied, locations indicate that the fruit is taken and relocated on the same position after some time, and repetitions refer to repeated data taken without changing or touching the fruit.

Acoustic measurements were taken with a device designed and tested by consecutive phases of approximation to the final solution. The laboratory recording system used to acquire the acoustic impulse information is comprised a prepolarised free-field 12mm microphone type 4189 B&K, of a frequency range from 6 3 to 20 kHz and a sensitivity of 50mVPa 1. A signal conditioning amplifier NEXUS B&K supplied power and provided electrical loading to the transducer, amplified the signal, provided appropriate output drive signal and facilitated the selection of the optimum band-pass filters. A microphone preamplifier type 2673 B&K completed the recording system. The preamplifier amplified the signal from the microphone.

A user friendly Windows-based software, ‘SanSon 1 2’, was developed for the control of the process and the register of data, providing an easy output to be used with Microsoft Excel. The software shows in the screen the acoustic signal ‘time versus intensity’ for each test, and saves it in an ASCII file.

A fast Fourier transform (FFT) of the signal was performed to determine the frequency spectrum, and subsequently, the natural frequencies of the watermelons. Sampling at 40 kHz for 4096 points results in a frequency resolution for the FFT of 9 766 Hz. A normalised spectrum was obtained by dividing the magnitude at each frequency by the maximum magnitude of the spectrum (see publication). Different acoustic parameters were evaluated for spectral characterisation: resonant frequency, maximum amplitude of the spectrum and band magnitude (BM) of the acoustic spectrum. The frequency resolution for the spectrum (9 766 Hz) is not very narrow. Therefore it is difficult to obtain a good segregation based on the resonant frequency, unless higher differences than the resolution occur between hollow and sound watermelons. This handicap may be overcome by defining the integral in the spectrum or BMs.

REPRODUCIBILITY DATASET FOR A BENCHMARK OF BIOMEDICAL SEMANTIC MEASURES LIBRARIES

  • Lastra-Díaz, Juan J.

  • Garcia-Serrano, Ana M.
This dataset introduces a set of reproducibility resources with the aim of allowing the exact replication of the experiments introduced by our companion paper, which compare the performance of the three UMLS-based semantic similarity libraries reported in the literature as follows: (1) UMLS::Similarity [20], (2) Semantic Measures Library (SML) [3], and the latest version of our Half-Edge Semantic Measures Library (HESML) introduced in our aforementioned companion paper. HESML V1R5 is the fifth release of our Half-Edge Semantic Measures Library (HESML) detailed in [15] which is a linearly scalable and efficient Java software library of ontology-based semantic similarity measures and Information Content (IC) models for ontologies like WordNet, SNOMED-CT, MeSH and GO. This dataset sets a self-contained reproducibility platform which contains the Java source code and binaries of our main benchmark program, as well as a Docker image which allows the exact replication of our experiments in any software platform supported by Docker, such as all Linux-based operating systems, Windows or MacOS. Our benchmark program is distributed with the UMLS SNOMED-CT and MeSH ontologies by courtesy of the US National Library of Medicine (NLM), as well as all needed software components with the aim of making the setup process easier. Our Docker image provides an exact virtual replica of the machine in which we ran our experiments, thus removing the need to carry-out any tedious setup process, such as the setup of the UMLS Metathesaurus on MySQL database, UMLS::Similarity library and other software components.

LIMITATIONS OF STATIONARY VLASOV-POISSON SOLVERS IN PROBE THEORY

  • Chiabò, Luca
  • Sánchez-Arriaga, Gonzalo
The goal of the data is showing the structure of the ion distribution function around a negatively polarized Langmuir probe with an elliptical cross section of eccentricity ep. For ep = 0 (cylindrical probe), the orbits of the ions are regular (integrable configuration) and the boundary that separates trapped and non-trapped ions in velocity space is a smooth curve. For ep ≠ 0, some orbits are chaotic (non-integrable configuration) and the boundary that separates trapped and non-trapped ions in velocity space has a fractal structure. The data also highlights the role of the numerical parameter Ntr, which control the number of loops around the probe that an ion should perform to be considered as trapped by the Vlasov-Poisson solver.

ESPECTROSCOPIA VISIBLE (400-700NM) CERCANO PARA EL ESTUDIO DE SUELOS AGRÍCOLAS

  • Ochoa Guerrero, Yuri Paola
  • Aramburu, Iratxe
  • García-Fernández, Canela
  • Barreiro Elorza, Pilar
