17 figures, 7 tables., Numerical models trying to faithfully represent the movement of floating bodies transport in open-channel flow require experimental data for validation. In order to provide an adequate dataset, flume experiments were carried out to analyse the transport of singular and grouped rigid bodies floating on the water surface. Both cylindrical and spherical samples were employed: they were released in a rectangular channel under steady conditions in one-dimensional (plain channel) and two-dimensional (2D) configurations using one rectangular side obstacle, one smooth side obstacle or two rectangular alternate obstacles. The outcomes of the experiments are the planar displacement and the rotation of the samples, which are related to the flow field in the different configurations. The detailed experimental analysis of the floating body motion provides information for the calibration of numerical models simulating floating bodies transport. This dataset is thus employed for the validation of the Eulerian–Lagrangian model ORSA2D_WT, highlighting its strengths and improvable aspects. Similar applications could be carried out with any 2D model which performs the simulation of discrete elements moving on the water surface., Peer reviewed

Author Correction: The GenTree Dendroecological Collection, tree-ring and wood density data from seven tree species across Europe (Scientific Data, (2020), 7, 1, (1), 10.1038/s41597-019-0340-y)
Scientific Data, Volume 7, Issue 1, 1 December 2020, Article number 114, The dataset presented here was collected by the GenTree project (EU-Horizon 2020), which aims to improve the use of forest genetic resources across Europe by better understanding how trees adapt to their local environment. This dataset of individual tree-core characteristics including ring-width series and whole-core wood density was collected for seven ecologically and economically important European tree species: silver birch (Betula pendula), European beech (Fagus sylvatica), Norway spruce (Picea abies), European black poplar (Populus nigra), maritime pine (Pinus pinaster), Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris), and sessile oak (Quercus petraea). Tree-ring width measurements were obtained from 3600 trees in 142 populations and whole-core wood density was measured for 3098 trees in 125 populations. This dataset covers most of the geographical and climatic range occupied by the selected species. The potential use of it will be highly valuable for assessing ecological and evolutionary responses to environmental conditions as well as for model development and parameterization, to predict adaptability under climate change scenarios., This publication is part of a project that has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No. 676876 (GenTree). Here, we provide the dataset associated with the research article ¿Orientation patterns of aragonitic crossed-lamellar, fibrous prismatic and myostracal microstructures of modern Glycymeris shells¿ [1]. Based on several tools (SEM, EBSD, laser confocal microscopy and FE-SEM) we present original data relative to the microstructure and texture of aragonite crystallites in all Glycymeris shell layers (crossed-lamellar, complex crossed-lamellar, fibrous prismatic and pedal retractor and adductor myostraca) and address texture characteristics at the transition from one layer to the other, identifying similarities and differences among the different layers. Shells were cut transversely, obliquely and longitudinally in order to obtain different orientated sections of the outer and inner layer and of the myostraca. The identification of major microstructural elements was provided by detailed SEM and laser confocal microscopy images. Microstructure and texture characterization was based on EBSD measurements presented as band contrast images and as color-coded crystal orientation maps with corresponding pole figures. Crystal co-orientation was measured with the MUD value. Finally, the distribution of the organic matrix occluded within the outer crossed-lamellar layer was revealed using FE-SEM. These data, besides providing a modern unaltered Glycymeris reference to detect diagenetic alteration in fossil analogs used for paleoenvironmental reconstructions, are useful to better comprehend the mechanisms of bivalve shell formation., GC acknowledges financial support of the 2017 Italian Ministry PRIN RX9XXY Project "Biota resilience to global change: biomineralization of planktic and benthic calcifiers in the past, present and future" to E. A MULTIDISCIPLINARY EXPERIMENTAL STUDY ON THE EFFECTS OF BREEDERS DIET ON NEWBORN SEAHORSES (HIPPOCAMPUS GUTTULATUS) [DATASET]

1 file, The global trade in seahorses is increasing and new rearing techniques are currently available for a few species. One of the main bottlenecks in seahorse production is reproduction success, which is dependent upon the administration of high quality diets to breeders. However, very little is known about the most adequate diets, on how they should be administered and on how they might affect newborn performance. In this study, three homogeneous groups of adult seahorses Hippocampus guttulatus were maintained in captivity. Each group was fed on one of the following diets since the onset of the breeding period: Unenriched adult Artemia (Diet A), unenriched adult Artemia and mysidaceans (Diet AM) and mysidaceans (Diet M). As a positive control we used a wild pregnant male. The mixed diet AM provided the highest overall breeding success and reasonable fatty acid profiles, and better resembled newborn from a wild male. The use of only mysidaceans (Diet M) provided the worse results in spite of the high DHA content. Significant differences were observed in newborn characteristics and fatty acid profiles among dietary groups and along the breeding season, especially in total n-3 HUFA and DHA. Monospecific diets including Artemia or mysidaceans very likely suffered nutritional deficiencies, which were reflected in morphological alterations of the muscle tissue (diet A) or abnormal early mortalities in newborn (diet M). Three progressive stages were identified along the whole breeding period: Initial mixed capital-income period (100 - 120 days since the onset of the breeding period), followed by an inflexion period (short transitional stage - income sources), and finally a long period characterized by the use of income sources and the progressive exhaustion of body reserves. Special attention should be deserved to the progressive changes in fatty acid profiles along the breeding season, resulting in a decrease in newborn performance. Considering the time required for a diet to be reflected in newborn, we recommend Hippocampus guttulatus breeders to be fed on a high quality diet for at least three months prior the breeding period, Peer reviewed

1 file, The current trend of climatic alterations will accelerate the modification of the ocean system by, among other aspects, changing the metal speciation and its bioavailability which may have an impact in their accumulation by marine organisms. Understanding the impact of these potential changes is essential for future risk assessment of metal contamination. In the present study, we selected the species Mediterranean mussel (Mytilus galloprovincialis) as the main European aquaculture production bivalve and due to its widespread use for biomonitoring purposes. A long-term test (2 months) was carried out to explore the impact that global change in the marine environment (warming and CO2 increase) may exert on the accumulation of dissolved trace metals (Cu, Co, Pb, Cd, Cr, As and Ni) in different body parts of mussels (foot and soft tissue).
Studied mussels were collected at two different climatic locations (Atlantic and Mediterranean Sea) and exposed to unspiked, unpolluted seawater from the Vigo Ria (NW Iberian Peninsula). Results showed that under the global change conditions proposed in this study (1100 pCO2 and 25 °C), the increase in temperature resulted in a lower condition index and byssus strength for mussels from Atlantic Sea, while Mediterranean sea mussels, adapted to higher temperatures, did not show remarkable variations. According to trace metals accumulation in different body parts of the studied mussels, it was observed that the effect of increasing CO2 alone did not show to have an impact in the bioaccumulation, but the combined stressors (increase in CO2 and temperature) may lead to an increase in the bioaccumulation for some elements. The increase in temperature resulted in a decrease of the Cu content of foot tissue (byssus gland) in mussels from Atlantic Sea, which is in accordance with the lower byssus strength observed under such conditions. Our results indicate that the expected seawater temperature increase, which will be produced gradually during next decades, should be further study to ensure the species adaptability and aquaculture production, Peer reviewed
