WEB DATABASES OF FEATHER PHOTOGRAPHS ARE USEFUL TOOLS FOR AVIAN MORPHOMETRY STUDIES
- Malo, Juan E.
- Mata, Cristina
1. Wing area, wing loading and aspect ratio are key variables for studies of avian comparative ecology, despite the complexity of measuring wing characteristics in living and museum specimens. The systematic databases of feather photographs available on the internet may offer an alternative way of obtaining such morphometric data. Here we evaluate whether measurements of scanned feathers from web photo databases may offer reliable estimates of avian morphometry.
2. Published data on wing area was obtained for 317 bird species and feather measurements from web photo databases for 225 of them. A variable termed ‘lift generation area’, a proxy for wing area, was calculated for each species on the basis of the mean length of the five distal secondary feathers and wingspan data from literature. The fit between this proposed variable and data extracted from the literature was examined by correlation, employing linear regression to explore the lack of fit among species.
3. ‘Lift generation area’ proved to be highly informative as a proxy for wing area for the study species as a whole (R2>0.98). Discrepancies observed between species were strongly negatively associated with the size of the original sample used to calculate wing area (P=0.001) and, to a lesser extent, with bird size (P=0.023), but not with aspect ratio. It was also found that the mean value of the mismatch between ‘lift generation area’ and wing area (13.1%) among the study species as a whole was of similar magnitude to that found between sources of bibliographical wing area data for the 64 species for which two published estimates of this variable were available (15.3%).
4. We conclude that measurements made from feather photo databases are reliable for use in studies of avian comparative ecology, enabling the inclusion of biomechanical parameters of many more species than featured at present.

NUMERICAL INTEGRATION OF THE ONE-DIMENSIONAL TIME-DEPENDENT SCHRODINGER EQUATION (TDSE) OF THE HELIUM ATOM IN THE INTERACTION WITH A STRONG ELECTROMAGNETIC FIELD [DATASET]
- Heras, Alba de las
- Plaja Rustein, Luis
- Hernández García, Carlos
[EN] We provide results of the numerical integration of the one-dimensional Time-Dependent Schr dinger Equation (TDSE) of the helium atom in the interaction with a strong electromagnetic field. We compare different theoretical models: (i) Two Active Electrons (TAE), which is the exact 1D description of the He atom, (ii) Idle Electron model (IDL), considering twoelectron correlation, and only one electron interacting with the external field, (iii) Single-Active Electron approximation (SAE), and (iv) the exact 1D description of the helium cation (He+). The methodology and data interpretation are publicly available
in [1] A. de las Heras, C. Hern ndez-Garc a, and L. Plaja, "Spectral signature of back reaction in correlated electron
dynamics in intense electromagnetic fields", Phys. Rev. Res. 2, 033047 (2020).
Concretely this dataset contains:
- High-order harmonic spectra for different wavelengths (400 nm-1030 nm) and peak intensities ((1.6 – 10) 10!" W/
cm#) of the driving laser field.
- Excited atomic transitions after the laser pulse (515 nm wavelength and 1.6 10!" W/cm# peak intensity) in the TAE
and IDL descriptions.
- Energy levels of the He atom (TAE) and the cation He+.
- Wavefunction of the second excited state of He.
One-electron energy dependence on the position of a secondary electron., The data is organized in .txt files with the following structure:
“Dataset_515nm_E0067_8cy_trap.txt” and “Dataset_515nm_E0067_8cy_sin2.txt” contain the high-order harmonic spectra in all the models calculated for a 8 cycle trapezoidal or sin2 envelope, 515 nm wavelength and peak intensity. This data corresponds to figures 1-3,7 in reference paper. The file includes a first line of headers indicating the data in each column: (c1) Frequency in atomic units for all the models except SAE, (c2) TAE spectra, (c3) Contribution of neutral He to the TAE spectra, (c4) Contribution of cation He+ to the TAE spectra, (c5) He+ exact spectra, (c6) IDL spectra, (c7) Frequency in atomic units for SAE, (c8) SAE spectra.
“Dataset_515nm_E012_8cy_trap.txt”, “Dataset_515nm_E017_8cy_trap”, “Dataset_400nm_E009_8cy_trap.txt”, “Dataset_515nm_E009_8cy_trap.txt”, “Dataset_800nm_E009_8cy_trap.txt”,“Dataset_1030nm_E009_8cy_trap.txt” contain the high harmonic spectra in all models except IDL. This data corresponds to Figs. 5-6 in reference paper. The filenames indicate the wavelength in nm and the amplitude in atomic units. The file is structured in columns: (c1) Frequency in atomic units for all the models except SAE, (c2) TAE spectra, (c3) Contribution of neutral He to the TAE spectra, (c4) Contribution of cation He+ to the TAE spectra, (c5) He+ exact spectra, (c6) Frequency in atomic units for SAE, (7) SAE spectra.
“Dataset_EnergyLevels_HeTAE.txt” and “DatasetEnergyLevels_HeION.txt” contain the energy levels obtained in the diagonalization of He TAE or He+ Hamiltonian (without laser field) in the 1D description. This data is displayed in Fig. 4(b) in reference paper.
“Dataset_ExcitedState_HeTAE.txt” contains the 2D array of the 2nd excited state of He, displayed in the inset of Fig. 4(c) in reference paper.

BILINGUAL ACQUISITION DATA: NATURAL INTERPRETING_NI DATASET
- Álvarez de la Fuente, María Esther
- Fernández Fuertes, Raquel
This investigation is focused on determining how bilingual children translate from one of their first languages to the other when they need to communicate. We examine the oral production of bilingual children with different language pairs as available in the CHILDES (Child Language Data Exchange System) (https://childes.talkbank.org/) project (MacWhinney 2000) (i.e., the FerFuLice, Ticio, Deuchar, Vila, GNP and Pérez-Bazán corpora) as well as in other compilation forms (i.e., Ronjat 1913; Leopold 1939–1949; Swain 1972; Lanza 1988, 1997, 2001; Cossato 2008), covering two types of data: spontaneous, where the children interact with adults in a natural context (e.g., at home); and experimental, where the children act as interpreters between two monolingual researchers.
The analysis of how these bilingual children interpret between their two first languages provides valuable information about the linguistic resources and translation strategies that these children use to communicate in a bilingual context through their interpreting performance., UVALAL, 1. BILINGUAL ACQUISITION DATA: LONGITUDINAL CORPUS_FERFULICE DATASET
- Fernández Fuertes, Raquel
- Liceras, Juana M.
This corpus contains spontaneous productions from a longitudinal study of two English/Spanish bilingual identical twins with the pseudonyms of Simon and Leo. They were born 28-DEC-1998 into a middle-class family in Spain. The father is a native speaker of Peninsular Spanish, and the mother is a native speaker of American English. The father always speaks to the children in Spanish and the mother always addresses them in English. The parents generally communicate in Spanish with each other, except on summers when they travel to the United States for approximately two months or when a monolingual English speaker is present. Therefore, we are dealing with bilingual English/Spanish first language acquisition in a monolingual-Spanish social context, a type of bilingualism that is referred to in the literature as individual bilingualism (Bhatia and Ritchie, 2004)., UVALAL (University of Valladolid Language Acquisition Lab), 1.
