CAN PARTIAL ACORN CONSUMPTION BE USED AS A STRATEGY TO AVOID THE DEPLETION OF CACHES DURING ACORN PILFERAGE?
- Arco Montero, José María del
Cache pilferage by competing conspecifics is a very common hoarding behavior used by animals. Members of rodent communities use a wide variety of strategies to minimize this pilferage. In this work, we investigated one of these strategies. We observed that certain rodent species partially consume acorns, leaving the embryo intact. We investigated whether this strategy was used by Mus spretus Lataste 1883 (Algerian mouse) to avoid cache pilferage by competing conspecifics. Partially consumed acorn remains left in underground stores could be viewed as remains by competing conspecifics, and would therefore be rejected, preventing its consumption and pilferage.
To test our hypothesis, we designed three experiments on the preference for intact acorns, acorns that had been partially consumed by the rodent itself or the remains from other competing conspecific rodents. The study verified whether the remains of partially consumed acorns were rejected.
We verified that these remains are more highly valued than intact acorns or even the remains of the rodent’s own previous consumption, thus rejecting our hypothesis. Remains are not used as a strategy to prevent theft. However, preference for the remains of other rodents’ acorns could form part of an anti-theft strategy. If the acorn remains are used as a decoy to attract the attention of thieves to prevent the consumption of intact acorns, the intact acorns would be better preserved in the stores for longer periods of time. The remains were consumed before the intact acorns. We verified that rodents prefer the remains of other rodents’ acorns to their own, and even prefer them to intact acorns. This behavior may be part of a strategy to reduce other rodents’ reserves to avoid future competition by conspecifics.

The treatment of pig manure is a major environmental issue, and photobioreactors containing consortia of microalgae and bacteria have proven to be a promising and sustainable treatment alternative. This work studies the effect of Cu, Zn and As, three toxic elements frequently present in piggery wastewater, on the performance and microbiome of photobioreactors. After dopage with Zn (100 mg/L), Cu (100 mg/L), and As (500 µg/L), the high biomass uptake of Zn (69–81%) and Cu (81–83%) decreased the carbon removal in the photobioreactors, inhibited the growth of Chlorella sp., and affected heterotrophic bacterial populations. The biomass As uptake result was low (19%) and actually promoted microalgae growth. The presence of Cu and As decreased nitrogen removal, reducing the abundance of denitrifying bacterial populations. The results showed that metal(loid)s significantly affected 24 bacterial genera and that they did not recover after exposure. Therefore, this study makes an important contribution on the impact of the presence of metal(loid)s in piggery wastewater that compromises the overall performance of PBRs, and so, the environmental and health impact of treated effluents., Instituto de Procesos Sostenibles, Departamento de Ingeniería Química y Tecnología del Medio Ambiente, Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades, Consejeria de Educacion Junta de Castilla y Leon, EU Feder Programme, National Research and Development Agency (ANID) of Chile

PHOTOLYTIC AND PHOTOCATALYTIC REMOVAL OF A MIXTURE OF FOUR VETERINARY ANTIBIOTICS
- Zambrano Flores, Johanna Vanessa
- García Encina, Pedro Antonio
- Jiménez Sevilla, Juan José
- López Serna, Rebeca
- Irusta Mata, Rubén
The removal of a mixture of four veterinary antibiotics (VA) – tetracycline (TET), ciprofloxacin (CIP), sulfadiazine (SDZ) and sulfamethoxazole (SMX) – via photo-degradation (UVC) and photocatalysis with TiO2 (UVC/TiO2) was investigated in a batch reactor under different initial concentrations (20, 100, 500 and 1000 μg/L per antibiotic). Ultra-high performance liquid chromatography coupled to a mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS) was used to determine the removal of these veterinary antibiotics. The removal of all antibiotics via photolysis was around 98–99% after 100 h for TET, 122 h for CIP, 212 h for SDZ and 240 h for SMX. Nevertheless, the removal of all antibiotics via photocatalysis was around 99–100% after 4.2 h for TET, 3.5 h for CIP, 7.1 h for SDZ and 16.5 h for SMX. The photolysis for the four veterinary antibiotics followed a first-order irreversible kinetic model. The photocatalysis of TET, CIP and SDZ followed a Langmuir-Hinshelwood kinetic model, and adsorption was considered the limiting step. SMX followed a first-order irreversible kinetic model. The photolytic degradation rate constant (k1) was 0.00073 min−1 for TET, 0.00055 min−1 for CIP, 0.00031 min−1 for SDZ and 0.00027 min−1 for SMX. While for photocatalysis k1 was 0.0044 min−1 for SMX; kL-H was 0.0284 min−1 for TET, 0.0379 min−1 for CIP and 0.0141 min−1 for SDZ. The VA degradation was enhanced by the use of a catalyst. Additionally, electrical energy per order (EEO) was assessed to estimate the electrical energy efficiency of each process. EEO values for photolysis were 339.06 kWh/m3/order for TET, 449.84 kWh/m3/order for CIP, 795.31 kWh/m3/order for SDZ and 897.71 kWh/m3/order for SMX. On the other hand, EEO values for photocatalysis were 14.96 kWh/m3/order for TET, 12.07 kWh/m3/order for CIP, 20.39 kWh/m3/order for SDZ and 62.10 kWh/m3/order for SMX. The energy consumption for photocatalysis was considerably lower than for photolysis. This study determined an overall degradation rate constant for a wide range of TET, CIP, SDZ and SMX concentrations. Furthermore, when working with a pH of 8 (a typical pH from wastewater from livestock farms) and a VA mixture whose concentrations resemble the characteristics of real water samples, that photolysis and photocatalysis are potential processes for wastewater treatment with low energy consumption., Instituto de Procesos Sostenibles, Departamento de Ingeniería Química y Tecnología del Medio Ambiente, Departamento de Química Analítica, Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades MICIU/AEI/ 10.13039/501100011033, Consejería de Educación de la Junta de Castilla y León, EU Feder Programme

This dataset contains experimental data associated to a series of dynamic tests performed on a set of twelve 5-meter-long timber beams with an additional mass placed on one end. Several scenarios have been considered, with added masses ranging from 0 to 1200 kg, whose aim is to reproduce the effect of a wall supported by the beams which affects them similarly to a boundary condition (something between the simple support and the ideal clamping). The dynamic tests have been performed by means of an impact hammer, which helps to measure the applied force, and several accelerometers intended to measure the response of six points of the beam. The force and acceleration recordings are stored in several files, which are contained in this dataset. VILLA SAVOYE PLANOS DE ESTRUCTURA. ANEJOS
- Zaparaín Hernández, Fernando
- Ramos Jular, Jorge Eduardo
- Llamazares Blanco, Pablo
- Barba Rodríguez, Daniel
The purpose of this article is the elaboration and analysis of a 3D model and detailed ground plans of the structure of the Villa Savoye, something does not tackle monographically yet. The article is based on in situ surveys and original documents from the Le Corbusier Foundation, such as building contractor plans, contradictory prices, construction photos and amateur filming. This set of sources makes this work a privileged case to learn how the reinforced concrete was used at the same time of its generalization. The structural ambiguity of Le Corbusier is verified, who places «the expression of the plastic forms» above the logical calculation or the simple manifestation of the supporting skeleton. He manipulates the Perret's classist architrave system. When the lowered beams and pillars are moved back, the scheme is not seen as a «cage», but as a table supported by «trestles», or as shelves «poked» on thin legs., Este artículo propone la elaboración y análisis de un modelo 3D y unas plantas detalladas de la estructura de la Villa Savoye, algo hasta ahora no abordado monográficamente.

BILINGUAL ACQUISITION DATA: DATIVE ALTERNATION_DA-L1 DATASET
- Sánchez Calderón, Silvia
- Fernández Fuertes, Raquel
This study aims to explore how monolingual and bilingual children acquire two types of English and Spanish dative alternation (DA) structures, namely, prepositional and double object constructions. We examine the spontaneous oral production of these children, as available in the CHILDES project (Child Language Data Exchange System; https://childes.talkbank.org/) (MacWhinney 2000) (i.e., English monolingual corpora: Brown, Cruttenden, MacWhinney, Sachs, Suppes and Wells; Spanish monolingual corpora: Linaza, Marrero and Ornat; and English-Spanish bilingual corpora: Deuchar, FerFuLice, Pérez-Bazán and Ticio). In these corpora, the children interact with adults (mainly, parents, but also caregivers or researchers).
The analysis of how these monolingual and bilingual children acquire their first language(s), in general, and the constructions at stake, in particular, sheds light on the relationship that is present in the acquisition of process of these constructions across English and Spanish. In this respect, the findings elucidate whether the syntactic derivational relationship (or lack thereof) between prepositional and double object constructions is similar or differs across the two languages under investigation and across the two child groups (monolinguals and bilinguals)., UVALAL, 1. This investigation is focused on the crosslinguistic influence between the two first languages (L1s) of bilingual children in the domain of direct objects. We examine the oral production of bilingual children with two different language pairs (i.e., Cantonese-English and Spanish-English) and compare it with that of the monolingual English and monolingual Cantonese children. All the data have been taken from the CHILDES project (Child Language Data Exchange System; https://childes.talkbank.org/) (MacWhinney 2000) (i.e., Cantonese-English bilingual corpus: YipMatthews; Spanish-English bilingual corpus: FerFuLice; English monolingual corpora: Sachs, Bloom, Demetras-Trevor; Cantonese monolingual corpus: Lee/Wong/Leung). These corpora comprise spontaneous data where the children interact with adults in a natural context (e.g., at home).
While null objects are possible and pervasive in Cantonese, their occurrence in languages like English and Spanish is rather restricted. The analysis of how Cantonese-English bilingual children produce direct objects in a quantitatively and qualitatively different way when compared to their Spanish-English bilingual and English monolingual counterparts provides valuable information about the nature and the directionality of crosslinguistic influence between bilingual children’s two L1s; it also presents new empirical evidence for the postulation that the development of the two L1s in bilingual children is interdependent., UVALAL, 1.
