1 file, This dataset contains the results of the fluorescent dissolved organic matter characterisation (FDOM) and water mass optimum multiparameter analysis from the MAFIA cruise (Migrants and Active Flux In the Atlantic ocean). Samples were collected in the tropical and subtropical Atlantic during the MAFIA cruise (April 2015) on board the BIO Hespérides. Seawater samples for biogeochemical analyses were collected at 13 stations (from the Brazilian coast to the Canary Islands), from the surface down to 3500 m, using a General Oceanics oceanographic rosette equipped with 24 l PVC Niskin bottles. Oxygen solubility was computed using the equation of Benson and Krause (1984). AOU (µmol/kg) was calculated by subtracting measured oxygen concentration from the oxygen solubility values at saturation, with respect to the atmosphere. Fluorescence measurements were performed with a Perkin-Elmer LS55 spectrofluorometer and FDOM was characterised by means of a Parallel Factor analysis. Integrated values were estimated by multiplying the discrete measurements by the distance, in meters, between samples. The contribution of each water mass to each sample was objectively quantified applying an optimum multiparameter analysis (excluding mixed layer samples, here < 100 m). The aim of this dataset was to jointly characterise the FDOM and water mass distributions to infer the processes that shape the dissolved organic matter pool in the deep ocean (water mass mixing and history vs. local processes), Horizon 2020 (H2020), grant/award no. 817806: Sustainable management of mesopelagic resources; Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación (MICINN), grant/award no. 1 file, The Cape Verde Frontal Zone (CVFZ) is a highly dynamic region located in the southern boundary of the Canary Current Eastern Boundary Upwelling Ecosystem. Due to the interaction of the Cape Verde Front with the Mauritanian coastal upwelling, the area features large vertical and horizontal export fluxes of organic matter. Full-depth profiles were recorded during FLUXES I cruise, with four consecutive transects defining a box embracing the giant filament of Cape Blanc and the Cape Verde front. Fifteen levels were sampled in medium and long stations (down to 4000 dbar) and 10 levels in short stations (down to 2000 dbar) where inorganic nutrients (NO3, NO2, Si(OH)4 and PO4), dissolved organic carbon/total dissolved nitrogen (DOC/TDN), and suspended particulate organic carbon and nitrogen (POC and PON) were sampled. Micromolar concentrations of nutrient salts were determined simultaneously by segmented flow analysis in an Alliance Futura autoanalyser. The determination of suspended POC and PON was carried out by high temperature catalytic oxidation at 900 °C in a Perkin Elmer 2400 elemental analyser. DOC and TDN were analysed by high temperature catalytic oxidation at 680 °C with a Shimadzu TOC-V analyser connected in line with a TNM1 measuring unit. Alongside with water samples conductivity, temperature and depth (CTD; SeaBird SBE911 plus), and dissolved oxygen (SeaBird SBE43), fluorescence of chlorophyll (SeaPoint SCF), and turbidity (SeaPoint STM) were measured. CTD conductivity was calibrated with water samples taken from the rosette and analysed on board with a Guildline 8410-A Portasal salinometer. Samples for dissolved oxygen (O2) determination were analysed on board by the Winkler potentiometric method. The chlorophyll (Chl) fluorescence sensor was calibrated with water samples taken at 4 depths in the photic layer which were estimated fluorometrically by means of a Turner Designs bench fluorometer 10-AU, Horizon 2020 (H2020), grant/award no. 817806: Sustainable management of mesopelagic resources; Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación (MICINN), grant/award no. 7 files, Knowledge of the three-dimensional movement patterns of elasmobranchs is vital to understanding their ecological roles and exposure to anthropogenic pressures. To date, comparative studies among species at global scales have mostly focused on horizontal movements. Our study addresses the knowledge gap of vertical movements by compiling the first global synthesis of vertical habitat use by elasmobranchs from data obtained by deployment of 989 biotelemetry tags on 38 elasmobranch species. Elasmobranchs displayed high intra- and interspecific variability in vertical movement patterns. Significant vertical overlap was observed for many epipelagic elasmobranchs, indicating an increased likelihood to display spatial overlap, biologically interact, and share similar risk to anthropogenic threats that vary on a vertical gradient. We highlight the critical next steps towards incorporating vertical movement into global management and monitoring strategies for elasmobranchs, emphasising the need to address geographic and taxonomic biases in deployments and to concurrently consider both horizontal and vertical movements, Peer reviewed

1 file, To evaluate changes in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems in the Azores, we developed paleoecological and paleoclimate records from Lake Funda on Flores Island that span the last millennium. Vegetation composition (n-alkane average chain length) indicate when human activities began in the catchment area and biogenic silica tracks changes in diatom productivity. In addition, sterol hydrogenation and archaeal lipids (isoprenoid glycerol dialkyl glycerol tetraethers) trace changes in redox conditions and biogeochemical cycles, respectively. Finally, a high-resolution reconstruction using leaf wax hydrogen isotopes records changes in precipitation amount over the last millennium, Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia (FCT), grant/award no. QUANTIFIED IMAGES PLUS VIDEOS OF IRON AND MANGANESE REDUCTION OF IRIS FILMS IN HYPERSALINE SOILS [DATASET]

  • Castañeda del Álamo, Carmen
  • Herrero Isern, Juan
  • Latorre Garcés, Borja
This dataset comprises 20 folders corresponding to the 10 iron plus 10 manganese IRIS film samplings in Salineta playa-lake. Each IRIS sampling includes also a video obtained with the clear IRIS tubes installed close to the IRIS films. We followed the method and camera instrument described in Scott et al. (2021) (DOI: 10.1002/saj2.20171). The videos of the soil allowed the direct monitoring of the oxide-paint removal and guided the successive sampling of the IRIS films. Each sampling included the video-image monitoring of the clear-IRIS tubes and the retrieval of three replicates of Fe and Mn IRIS films. Each folder contains the field photographs of the three iron or manganese films sampled. The photographs were processed: after cropping to the area of interest, they were binarized and the reduced (white) area of the film was then quantified. The numbering of the folders follows the order of sampling, from 1 to 10, and folders are labeled with F for iron and with M for manganese films. The Excel worksheet included in the present dataset contains the quantification data of the oxide-coating removed from iron and manganese films, together with the quantification of the black sulfides deposited on the iron films. The film area under reducing conditions (white PVC film) is expressed in percentage of the total film area. This percentage of paint removed has been calculated: 1) for every cm of the film depth (50 cm), 2) in the upper 0-30 cm of the film, and 3) in the total length of the film (0-50 cm). The removal rate indicates the reducing conditions evolution and intensity in the studied soils of the saline wetland., The data corresponds to the Spanish study area, the Salineta inland saline wetland (41°28'55.34"N, 0° 9'23.59"W) located 60 km far from Zaragoza city, in one of the most arid areas of the Central Ebro Basin, NE Spain. In this project we studied the redox conditions of the hypersaline soils in Salineta playa-lake, which are subjected to intermittent flooding, along a period of 17 months, in 2019 and 2020. The data were obtained during the monitoring of the soil redox conditions using IRIS (Indicators of Reduction in Soils) films and clear IRIS tubes coated with iron oxide and manganese oxide and supplied by the Prof. Martin Rabenhorst and Dr. Brian Scott, from the University of Maryland, USA. The monitoring of the IRIS films consisted on the quantification of the oxide-coating removed from the films. The oxide-coating of the films was reduced and then dissolved due to the microbial action. Firstly, the manganese-oxide coated films and later the iron-oxide coated films lost gradually their cover paint until showing the white underlying PVC film without paint., These data belong to the research project (AQUASALT), EraNET that in Spain has been supported by grant PCI2018-09299 funded by MCIN/AEI/10.13039/50110 0 011033 and co-funded by the European Union., Peer reviewed
