MARINE DATA FROM CONTINUOUS ACQUISITION SYSTEMS ON BOARD THE R/V MIGUEL OLIVER IN SPANISH WATERS IN THE FRAMEWORK OF AIR-SEA INTERACTION STUDIES (2014-2023)
- Sánchez Lorente, Ángel
- Tel, Elena
[Disciplines]
Atmosphere, Physical oceanography, [Parameters]
Horizontal spatial co-ordinates, Date and time, Air temperature, Atmospheric humidity, Solar Radiation, Wind strength and direction, Skin temperature of the water column, This dataset combines meteorological and sea surface (thermosalinometer) data collected between 2014 and 2023 aboard the R/V Miguel Oliver, owned and operated by the Spanish General Secretariat of Fisheries. These data have been analyzed within the framework of air-sea interaction flux studies along Spanish waters. Although atmospheric pressure data are not available in the considered records—making it impossible to calculate air-sea fluxes using the bulk approximation—the remaining variables retain scientific value and are therefore revised, included and presented in this dataset.
Meteorological variables include air temperature (DRYT), relative humidity (RELH), wind speed (WSPD), and total incident radiation (RDIN), which encompasses both longwave and shortwave components. Although RDIN is not directly used for flux calculations, it is included because it complements the heat storage balance of the ocean alongside the flux variables. The sea surface temperature is stored as TEMP.
The monthly files are stored in monthly Medar/Medatlas-format (Lowry et al., 2024). with hourly resolution. They are named as follows: "29MO_YYYYMM.dat", where "29MO" identifies the vessel (according to C17 SeaDataNet vocabulary),"YYYY" represents the year, and "MM" indicates the month. The dataset has undergone quality control procedures in accordance with SeaDataNet guidelines (Schaap and Lowry, 2010). As per the Medar/Medatlas format, quality control flags are included in an additional column to supplement the described variables, This work has been carried out within the framework of the study of heat fluxes and atmosphere-ocean interactions in the context of climate change (JAE-INTRO-ICU 23 01472 fellowship, CSIC). Thanks are due to the Spanish General Secretariat of Fisheries, the vessel's crew and also the technicians involved in the instrumentation maintenance and data collection.

SUMMER ICHTHYOPLANKTON SURVEYS [DATASET]
- Sabatés, Ana
- Raya, Vanesa
- Bas, Carles
- Palomera, Isabel
Data set generated by the authors from samples collected during the oceanographic surveys.-- The dataset contains:
• The stations sampled in each survey, with location data (longitude and latitude) and data for the month and year sampled.
• Surface oceanographic variables (temperature, in ºC, salinity and chlorophyll-a, in µg L-1), and bottom depth (m), at each sampling station.
• Abundance of fish larvae collected with the Bongo net, standardized per unit area (No. larvae 10 m 2), at each sampling station, This work investigates the main changes undergone by the summer larval fish community over three decades along the Catalan coast, an area characterized by a wide array of environmental conditions. The study was based on nine ichthyoplankton surveys carried out in June, July and September in three decades, 1980s, 2000s and 2010s, covering the same area and applying the same sampling methodology. Throughout the study period, an increase in sea surface temperature, particularly marked in June, and a decrease in surface chlorophyll-a associated with a decline in runoff from the Ebro and Rhone rivers was observed. Marked changes in the composition and abundance of the larval fish community were detected between June and July in the 1980s and the following decades. These changes were mainly due to the presence for the first time in the area of warm water species, such as Thalassoma pavo and Caranx rhonchus, or to the increase in their abundance, such as Sardinella aurita and Pomatomus saltatrix, in the 2000s in relation to the northward expansion of the adults ' range. The presence of larvae of warm water species in the 2000s and 2010s contributed to an increase in specific richness of the larval fish community compared to values obtained in the 1980s. Other species showed a decline in abundance over time, probably due to a decrease in surface chlorophyll-a, e.g. Engraulis encrasicolus, although overexploitation is also an important factor to consider. Larvae of other species, such as coastal and mesopelagic fishes, did not show changes in abundance over the three decades. In a future scenario of increasing sea water temperature and marine heatwaves events, enhanced stratification, and decreasing surface primary production, the changes that may occur in the fish larvae community will largely depend on the adaptive responses of individual species to the new environmental conditions, Fundación Ramón Areces (ARECES survey). PRE-STACK TIME-MIGRATED SEISMIC PROFILE ATLANTIS-I, 31ºN CENTRAL ATLANTIC [DATASET]
- Ranero, César R.
- Ugalde, Arantza
- Gómez de la Peña, L.
- Prada, Manel
Pre-stack time-migrated seismic section across ATLANTIS-I profile in 2022 at 31ºN Central Atlantic. The seismic data were acquired with a seismic source that consisted of two sub-arrays of airguns with total capacity of ~4000 c.i., towed from the stern of the boat at 15 m of depth, and fired every 100 m. Seismic data were collected with a 240-channel, 3-km-long streamer towed from the stern of the boat at 19 m of depth. Data processing included streamer geometry for common mid-point geometry, a two-window statistical Wiener deconvolution, velocity analysis every 5 km, stacking, and time migration using a finite-differences algorithm and a geological meaningful Vp model. Final display is shown with a Butterworth minimum phase band pass filter (3-60 Hz) and a median automatic gain control (AGC) with a 2 second sliding window to balance amplitudes, Spanish Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities (MICINN), grant/award no. DISCRETE MEASUREMENTS OF PH, DISSOLVED INORGANIC NUTRIENTS (NITRATE, PHOSPHATE AND SILICATE) AND HYDROGRAPHIC VARIABLES (SALINITY, TEMPERATURE, DISSOLVED OXYGEN) OBTAINED DURING THE CRUISE RREX 2015

This dataset gathers discrete measurements of pH, dissolved inorganic nutrients (nitrate, phosphate and silicate) and hydrographic variables (salinity, temperature, dissolved oxygen) obtained during the cruise RREX 2015 (Reykjanes Ridge Experiment) carried out in the North Atlantic Ocean from 5 June to 10 July 2015 aboard R/V Thalassa, The Reykjanes Ridge is a major topographic feature of the North-Atlantic Ocean. It lies in a central position along the main paths followed by the upper and lower limbs of the Meridional Overturning Cell (MOC), which contributes at moderating the European climate in creating a transport of heat toward the North Atlantic. Our hypothesis is that the Reykjanes Ridge influences the main components of the upper and lower limbs of the MOC because it is a strong constraint on the horizontal and vertical circulation, it impacts the water mass distribution and evolution and it is a region of intense turbulent mixing. The objective of the RREX project is to conduct a process study in order to better understand the role of the Reykjanes Ridge on the dynamics and water mass transformation in the subpolar gyre and ultimately on the MOC. This project relied on two hydrographic cruises carried out in 2015 and 2017 to acquire the adequate dataset to (1) provide a synoptic high-resolution and full depth survey to monitor the flow along and across the ridge, (2) to quantify the variability of the vertical and horizontal structure of the currents parallel to the ridge at daily to seasonal time-scales and (3) to provide sufficient turbulence observations to monitor the heterogeneous and intermittent mixing processes, AtlantOS, Peer reviewed

A DATABASE BASED ON A SYSTEMATIC REVIEW OF PAST MARINE FAUNAL REMAINS FROM SOUTHERN HEMISPHERE (V.1.0) [DATASET]
- Bas, Maria
- Diéguez Díaz, Sofía
- Coll, Marta
This database, based on archaeological remains of fish, seabirds and pinnipeds from the Holocene in the Southern Hemisphere, was compiled using a systematic review. The systematic review literature followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines (Page et al., 2021). The search was performed in English and Spanish in 6th February 2023 in two databases: (a) Scopus and (b) Web of Science, by applying a combination of keywords within the documents’ title, abstract and keywords. Each search string contained four categories connected by the Boolean operator “AND”: study area (countries and provinces), selected species, period and archaeological terms. Each search term was connected by the Boolean operator “OR” within each category.
Data from publications meeting all inclusion criteria were used to create a database in Microsoft Excel. The collected data were based on NISP (Number of Identified Specimens) and MNI (Minimum Number of Individuals) from marine fishes, seabirds and pinnipeds associated with archaeological sites (Grayson, 1984; Lyman, 1994). Both are quantitative metrics for analysing faunal assemblages. NISP is the count of identified specimens, allowing for an examination of the diversity and abundance of faunal remains, while MNI refers to the minimum number of individuals per taxonomic category present in the assemblages (Grayson, 1984; Lyman, 1994). We also collected data from the location (latitude and longitude) and radiocarbon dating of each archaeological site. In some cases, coordinates were not provided, but all publications included a map, allowing us to infer the coordinates using Google Earth Pro (version 7.3.6.9345). The Holocene is divided into three periods: the boundary between the Early and Middle Holocene is set around 8,200 years BP, and the Middle-Late Holocene around 4,200 years BP (Walker et al., 2012). Many publications provided multiple radiocarbon dates with their standard deviations; in these cases, we computed an estimated average of the combined dates and the precision of that estimate following Borenstein et al., (2010). Radiocarbon dates were reported either as years BP (Before Present) or years cal. BP (calibrated Before Present). In the context of marine ecosystems in the Southern Hemisphere, radiocarbon dating can be influenced by regional variations in atmospheric ¹⁴C levels and ocean reservoir effects, making calibration essential for accurate chronological reconstructions (Hogg et al., 2020). Calibration involves using region-specific curves. Accordingly, we used SHCal20 (Hogg et al., 2020) with the Calib v8.2 program (Stuiver & Reimer, 1993). This database contains two main parts: the README, where you can find all the data collected in each column along with an explanation of each item and the complete database, This work was supported by MCIN/AEI/10.13039/501100011033 and NextGenerationEU/PRTR, Grant no. Los formularios recogen la información de las piezas incluidas en el proyecto “Imitaciones de piedras en vidrio en época romana y su reinterpretación en época moderna” (PID2020-117299GB-I00); acrónimo LAPISVITRUMQUE. Y en el caso de las producciones en piedra (instrumenta domestica, adornos personales, etc.) contrastar su aparición o no en vidrio., The forms collect information on the pieces included in the Project “Glass Imitations of Stones in the Roman Period and their Reinterpretation in the Modern Era” (PID2020-117299GB-I00), acronym: LAPISVITRUMQUE, funded by MCIN/ AEI/10.13039/501100011033. There are three forms: one for glass (Tabla_vidrio), another for precious and ornamental stones (Tabla_piedras), and a third that relates the two (Tabla_correlacion). The first two include data related to the pieces themselves and the third seeks to compare glass and stone through various filters by set, group, class, colour and quality. This form is constantly being updated as new information is added. In the case of glass, it can be used to determine the shapes imitated in their decoration and the type of ornamental rocks or precious stones they imitate. And in the case of stone productions (instrumenta domestica, personal ornaments, etc.) to contrast their appearance or not in glass., Agencia Estatal de la Investigación.
