The Ibiza channel is a well-established biodiversity hotspot and accordingly more intensive monitoring of the Ibiza channel is carried out to capture the mesoscale and submesoscale structures and their relation to the weekly to seasonal and annual/inter-annual variability. On the canales endurance line, ocean gliders making repeated dives from the surface to 1000 m interior of the ocean, repeating the cycle every ~5 hours, and traveling ~5 km in the horizontal during each dive. The canales endurance line is covering both the Mallorca and Ibiza channel in a semi-continuous operational mode. The glider missions typically last about 60 to 90 days, providing 6-10 sections of the Ibiza channel and 2 sections of the Mallorca channel. Since 2011 the Canales Endurance line has completed 108 glider missions, covered 53000 km over the ground, and has more than 97000 physical and biogeochemical profiles., Ministerio de ciencia, innovación y universidades (http://www.ciencia.gob.es/), Govern de les Illes Balears (http://www.caib.es/)., Peer reviewed

The Algerian Basin (AB) is located in the south of the Western Mediterranean Sea and is characterized by the presence of fairly fresh surface waters coming from the Atlantic (Atlantic Water- AW) and the more saline waters from the northwestern Mediterranean region interacting at different scales from basin-scale to mesoscale structures. The project aims at assessing the importance of a monitoring line across the AB between Palma de Mallorca and the Algerian coasts. This repository contains the raw qPCR data, processed datasets, and R code used to investigate drivers of relative telomere length (rTL) in the Western-Canaries Lizard (Gallotia galloti) across Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain. Data were collected across multiple localities spanning an elevational gradient between 2013 and 2022., This repository contains the raw data and annotated R code associated with the study of relative telomere length (rTL) dynamics in the Western-Canaries Lizard (Gallotia galloti) across Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain. The dataset comprises qPCR-derived relative telomere length measurements from lizard tissue samples (blood and tail tip) collected across multiple localities spanning an elevational gradient, sampled across several years (2017–2022). Raw Cq values from qPCR plates are included alongside derived rTL values calculated using the Pfaffl method, which accounts for plate-specific amplification efficiencies. Additional biological and environmental variables accompany each sample record, including sex, snout-vent length, morphotype, elevation, and microclimate data (relative humidity, wind speed, solar radiation, radiant sky temperature)., The R code covers the full analytical pipeline: (1) calculation of relative telomere length from raw CT values and assessment of inter-plate repeatability via intraclass correlation coefficients; (2) principal component analysis to reduce correlated environmental variables; (3) generalised linear mixed-effects modelling (GLMM) using a Gamma distribution with year as a random effect; (4) multi-model inference via AICc-based dredging and model averaging to identify key predictors of rTL; (5) hierarchical variance partitioning; and (6) sensitivity analyses examining the influence of tissue type, locality, and morphotype on model outcomes., Natural Environment Research Council: NE/S007458/1, PANORAMA; The Slovenian Research and Innovation Agency; Ministry of Economy, Industry and Competitiveness; Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia; European Research Council, Peer reviewed

The “Data_Tables_S2_S3_S4_S6.xlsx” file contains the raw data for the analyses of the effects of forest protection, bioclimatic region, slope, aspect, forest leaf habit, basal area (in 1990, 2000 and 2015) and % basal area harvested per plot between 2000 and 2015 (only for the analysis of forest dieback) on two dependent variables, i.e: i) the occurrence of an unspecific disturbance, wildfire or harvesting event, ii) the occurrence of a drought-driven forest dieback episode, While disturbances are essential for biodiversity, their escalation driven by climate change may threaten forest ecosystems. Contrasting approaches to adapt forests to disturbances—intensifying management versus encouraging natural succession towards more mature ecosystems—have sparked a debate about whether protection influences forests' vulnerability to disturbance. This question, however, has barely been investigated. Natura 2000 network is the backbone of biodiversity protection in Europe. We compared the long-term incidence of harvesting, wildfires, and drought-driven forest dieback inside and outside Natura 2000 areas in Catalonia (NE Spain) by combining remote sensing-derived maps of harvesting and wildfires (1985-2023), an exhaustive ground survey on forest dieback (2012-2023), and forest characteristics extracted from 3,400 permanent plots inventoried in 1990, 2000, and 2015., European Research Council: GAP-101000574, Horizon 2000; European Research Council: GAP 101056755, Horizon Europe; European Research Council: GAP 101081251, Horizon Europe; Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades: PID2023-152644NB-I00; Agència de Gestió d'Ajuts Universitaris i de Recerca: 2021 SGR 00889; Agència de Gestió d'Ajuts Universitaris i de Recerca: 2021 SGR 00889, Peer reviewed

MARINE LITTER CAN SHIFT SEA TURTLE NESTS TOWARD THE SHORELINE [DATASET]

This dataset contains 40 GeoPackage (GPKG) vector layers representing the spatial distribution of anthropogenic marine macro-litter items detected on nesting beaches of Boa Vista Island, Cabo Verde., Each layer corresponds to an individual surveyed beach section or survey unit and includes point locations of manually identified macro-litter items derived from high-resolution drone imagery., The dataset was produced to quantify and analyze patterns of marine litter accumulation on sea turtle nesting beaches and to assess its role as an environmental risk factor., Marine litter is an emerging threat to sea turtle rookeries, yet its effects on nesting behaviour remain poorly understood. In this study, we investigated how macro-litter accumulation on beaches influences the spatial distribution of loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta) nests on Boa Vista Island, Cabo Verde. We mapped litter across 40 surveyed beach sections and combined these data with nest locations and control points. Our results revealed that females tend to nest closer to the shoreline when litter is more abundant, overriding natural mid-beach nesting preferences. We suggest that marine litter adds a new dimension to the phenomenon of coastal squeeze, further reducing the availability of suitable nesting habitat. The mechanism identified is likely relevant in other major nesting areas where litter accumulates, potentially reshaping habitat use for other populations worldwide. Our findings highlight the indirect consequences of marine litter and the need for further research on its ecological implications., Universidade do Porto; Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia; European Research Council, Peer reviewed
