Complex systems are characterized by nonlinear dynamics, multi-level interactions, and emergent collective behaviors. Traditional analyses that focus solely on pairwise interactions often oversimplify these systems, neglecting the higher-order interactions critical for understanding their full collective dynamics. Recent advances in multivariate information theory provide a principled framework for quantifying these higher-order interactions, capturing key properties such as redundancy, synergy, shared randomness, and collective constraints. However, two major challenges persist: accurately estimating joint entropies and addressing the combinatorial explosion of interacting terms. To overcome these challenges, we introduce THOI (Torch-based High-Order Interactions), a novel, accessible, and efficient Python library for computing high-order interactions in continuous-valued systems. THOI leverages the well-established Gaussian copula method for joint entropy estimation, combined with state-of-the-art batch and parallel processing techniques to optimize performance across CPU, GPU, and TPU environments. Our results demonstrate that THOI significantly outperforms existing tools in terms of speed and scalability. Specifically, THOI reduces the time required to exhaustively analyze all interactions in small systems (≤ 30 variables). For larger systems, where exhaustive analysis is computationally impractical, THOI integrates optimization strategies that make higher-order interaction analysis feasible. We validate THOI’s accuracy using synthetic datasets with parametrically controlled interactions and further illustrate its utility by analyzing fMRI data from human subjects in wakeful resting states and under deep anesthesia. Finally, we analyzed over 900 real-world and synthetic datasets, establishing a comprehensive framework for applying higher-order interaction (HOI) analysis in complex systems. THOI opens new perspectives for testing both established and novel hypotheses about the multi-level, nonlinear, and multidimensional nature of complex systems., Peer reviewed

SAMPLING HOUR MATTERS: DIEL VARIATION IN LEUKOCYTE PROFILE OF RED-LEGGED PARTRIDGES
- Pérez-Rodríguez, Lorenzo
Leukocyte counts are widely used as biomarkers of immune function and physiological condition in ecological and evolutionary research. However, their reliability depends on understanding the sources of variation unrelated to immunity, including the hour of sampling. We investigated whether leukocyte profiles were affected by the hour of sampling in adult male red-legged partridges (Alectoris rufa) using a repeated-measures design in which birds were sampled at four time points across the day (06:00h, 10:30h, 15:30h, 20:00h) over four consecutive weeks under controlled housing conditions. Total leukocyte (WBC) counts and the absolute numbers of all leukocyte types showed pronounced daily fluctuations, with minima at mid-morning and recovery by afternoon or evening. Proportional measures were more stable, although eosinophil and monocyte proportions varied significantly across the day. Variance partitioning and effects sizes revealed that only total WBCs and the absolute counts of lymphocytes and monocytes exhibited substantial diel effects, with sampling hour explaining a meaningful fraction of their variation. For all other leukocyte variables, hour-of-day effects were statistically detectable but biologically minor. In addition to diel patterns, we detected variation across sampling days: heterophil and monocyte proportions and the H:L ratio declined on day 3, lymphocyte proportions rose, and eosinophils increased sharply on day 4. These fluctuations likely reflect transient physiological or environmental factors, although their cause remains uncertain. Handling time also significantly affected most leukocyte variables, with longer handling intervals producing rapid changes in cell numbers. Overall, our findings demonstrate that leukocyte profiles in red-legged partridges are sensitive to sampling hour, day-to-day conditions, and handling duration. We recommend standardising sampling within narrow time windows and recording the sampling hour for all leukocyte variables, so that time-of-day effects can be statistically controlled., Proyecto 2022-GRIN-34462 de la Universidad de Castilla - La Mancha y el Fondo Europeo de Desarrollo Regional (FEDER) y Proyecto SBPLY/21/180501/000266 de la Junta de Comunidades de Castilla - La Mancha y el Fondo Europeo de Desarrollo Regional (FEDER), No

Agricultural landscapes feature marked seasonal changes in the quality and quantity of habitats and floral resources supporting pollinating insects. Seasonal dynamics can affect the structure of plant-pollinator interactions, yet the relative importance of both landscape elements with spatio-temporal dynamics and those elements that are more static in space and time remains largely unknown. Such an understanding is needed to identify resource-mediated modifications of plant-pollinator network structures and their functional and management implications. To understand the spatio-temporal effects of landscape heterogeneity on the structure of plant-pollinator networks, we sampled plant-pollinator (Apiformes - except Apis mellifera; Syrphidae) communities over three seasonal periods in twelve landscapes in central Germany. The landscapes comprised spatial gradients in the proportion of semi-natural habitat cover and edge density. To assess temporal changes, we evaluated the cover of mass-flowering crops in bloom, floral diversity, and honey bee density at each plant-pollinator sampling event. Spatio-temporally dynamic characteristics, particularly the cover of mass-flowering crops, were more important than static characteristics in explaining variation in plant-pollinator network structure across the three seasonal periods. The richness of plants and pollinators was generally lower when the proportion of mass-flowering crops was high. Under such conditions, networks were more connected, with greater niche overlap among pollinators, and decreased network specialization (H2’). Richness was higher in landscapes with high edge density, with an increasing effect on network connectance up to a certain threshold. The proportion of semi-natural habitat cover and floral diversity had differential effects on the richness of plants and pollinators, with strong effects on the dietary niche overlap of the pollinators, potentially indicating a decrease in competition when semi-natural habitat cover and flower diversity are high. Synthesis and application. To better support plant-pollinator communities in agricultural-dominated landscapes, we suggest incentivizing the planting of complementary floral resources and preserving or restoring semi-natural habitat areas. Especially in intensively used agroecosystems, the negative effects of mass-flowering crops can be mitigated by maintaining flower-rich edge habitats and relatively small field sizes, which help support plant and pollinator communities, avoid potential negative effects of exploitative competition, and ensure the sustainability of pollination services via increased functional redundancy., Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research: PhD consortium INTERCEDE
