- Release note for version v2: added 5 missing municipalities - The Integrated surveillance records of invasive mosquito detections in Spanish municipalities is a curated dataset covering all 8,132 Spanish municipalities, describing their status in relation to the detection of any of the three invasive mosquito species: Aedes albopictus, Aedes japonicus, and Aedes aegypti. The dataset spans a 21-year period from the first detection of Aedes albopictus in 2004, to December 31, 2024. For each municipality, it provides information on the year of first detection of any of the three species, the surveillance strategy by which the detection was made and the data source in case of field detections. Detection references from Mosquito Alert records are not included in the dataset, though as all citizen reports, they are publicly accessible via the interactive map at https://map.mosquitoalert.com by selecting both the municipality name and time period. The dataset has a dual origin, combining two distinct types of information to maximize surveillance capacity in Spain: (i) field sampling data and (ii) citizen science observations. Field data derive from the authors' own records complemented by scientific literature, academic institutions, grey literature and public health authorities. Citizen-sourced data have been collected since 2014 through the Mosquito Alert platform, contributed by thousands of citizen scientists and validated by a team of expert entomologists. This dataset forms the primary basis for the article: Integrating citizen science and field sampling into next-generation early warning systems for vector surveillance: Twenty years of municipal detections of Aedes invasive mosquito species in Spain by the same authors., Intellectual property (IP) rights for this dataset are held by the authors and their affiliated institutions for field data, and by the Mosquito Alert community regarding citizen science data. Native to East Asia, the Asian bush mosquito (Aedes japonicus) has recently expanded its global range, with established invasive populations in Europe and North America. Given its potential role as a vector of various arboviruses, understanding its invasion process and ecological dynamics is crucial for managing its spread and mitigating public health risks. In the Iberian Peninsula, the species was first detected in Asturias in 2018 and has since expanded to neighbouring regions. Here, we elucidate the invasion pathways and possible origins of Ae. japonicus populations in Spain using mitochondrial and nuclear sequence data and microsatellite markers, and by screening for the presence of maternally transmitted bacteria of the genus Wolbachia, which is known to affect mitochondrial DNA diversity. We analysed 635 Ae. japonicus specimens collected between 2018 and 2023 from 14 countries, including Japan (native range), the United States, and 12 European countries including Spain. No clear association between haplotypes and geographical location was detected in any of the three genes analysed (nuclear ITS2, mitochondrial COI and ND4), providing limited insight into the origin of the Spanish Ae. japonicus. Wolbachia was not detected in any of the screened samples based on the wsp gene. In contrast, population structure analysis based on microsatellites revealed a clearer picture of geographic association. Most of the Spanish samples clustered closely with those from College Park, Maryland (USA), located near the Port of Baltimore, one of the largest ports in the United States and a recognised gateway for invasive species introductions. Northern Spain hosts major seaports such as Bilbao and Gijón, both ranked among the ten largest in the country, whereas the nearest established Ae. japonicus population in Europe lies over 1,000 km away in northeastern France. Taken together, these findings suggest that the most plausible invasion route of Ae. japonicus into Spain involves maritime transport of eggs from the eastern coast of the United States (Port of Baltimore, Maryland) to northern Spanish ports, likely accompanied by additional minor introductions of European origin. The inclusion of additional microsatellite loci originally developed for Ae. albopictus yielded results consistent with those obtained using Ae. japonicus-specific loci, reinforcing the robustness of the observed patterns. This work provides new insights into the invasion process of Ae. japonicus in Europe and highlights the need for continuous monitoring and tailored interventions at key ports of entry., European Commission, Peer reviewed

Usage Notes: dataset of Generation and maintenance of predation hotspots of a functionally important herbivore in a patchy habitat mosaic Data file contains values for each patch of the accumulated predation rate after 5 days and 10 days of the experiment (response variable) and of the attributes at patch and landscape levels (z-score of HSA) used as predictor in the Multi-model averaging selection. Bold numbers evidence patches where high aggregations of predation risk occurred (predation hotspots). dataset.xlsx, 1. By modifying how critical ecosystem functions are distributed across the landscape, the spatial configuration and characteristics of patches can play a strong role in structuring communities. In strongly predator-controlled ecosystems, this patchy distribution of function can have complex downstream consequences, subjecting some areas to disproportionately high rates of predation, leaving other areas susceptible to herbivore outbreaks. 2. In this study we assess how spatial attributes at patch and landscape scales potentially influence the spatial and temporal distribution of predation on a functionally important herbivore in a patchy Mediterranean marine macrophyte community characterized by strong top-down control. 3. We experimentally tracked how predation risk of tethered sea urchins varied across space over a 10-day period in a patchy seagrass meadow. We related these patterns with patch and landscape-level attributes across the habitat mosaic. 4. At the level of the patch, predation risk was highest in seagrass patches with low canopies, without access to sheltering rocks. Scaling up to the landscape mosaic however, predation risk increased in dense aggregations of patches with high perimeter-to-area ratios close to rocky habitats. Predation aggregated in spatially-explicit hotspots and coldspots that were maintained through time. Interestingly, this pattern of predation risk correlated well with the natural abundance of sea urchins. 5. Our results show that spatial patch configuration can be a strong mediator of top trophic functions in marine ecosystems, causing significant clumping in the way predation – and therefore herbivory – are distributed across space. Given the importance of top-down control for these shallow marine ecosystems, it is crucial to incorporate landscape attributes in understanding the impact of functionally important herbivores on highly fragmented habitats., Peer reviewed

BeePath2012, Human mobility is becoming an accessible field of study thanks to the progress and availability of tracking technologies as a common feature of smart phones. We describe an example of a scalable experiment exploiting these circumstances at a public, outdoor fair in Barcelona (Spain). Participants were tracked while wandering through an open space with activity stands attracting their attention. We develop a general modeling framework based on Langevin Dynamics, which allows us to test the influence of two distinct types of ingredients on mobility: reactive or context-dependent factors, modelled by means of a force field generated by attraction points in a given spatial configuration, and active or inherent factors, modelled from intrinsic movement patterns of the subjects. The additive and constructive framework model accounts for some observed features. Starting with the simplest model (purely random walkers) as a reference, we progressively introduce different ingredients such as persistence, memory, and perceptual landscape, aiming to untangle active and reactive contributions and quantify their respective relevance. The proposed approach may help in anticipating the spatial distribution of citizens in alternative scenarios and in improving the design of public events based on a facts-based approach., Peer reviewed
