IMPROVING THE KNOWLEDGE OF APHYTIS MELINUS BIOLOGY TO OPTIMIZE ITS MASS PRODUCTION: INFLUENCE OF FOOD SOURCE, HOST AND PARASITOID DENSITIES [DATASET]
- González Zamora, José Enrique
- Castillo, María Luz
- Avilla Hernández, Carlos
Data obtained during the years 2011 and 2012.
The purpose of this work was to study the influence of several factors on fecundity and proportion of female parasitoids in the mass rearing of Aphytis melinus DeBach (Hymenoptera Aphelinidae). Its mass-rearing can be influenced by both host and parasitoid densities and by the available food source.
Experiment 1 was designed to study the effect of host density on the fecundity of A. melinus, especially under high host densities, as it can happen in comercial mass-rearing. Three densities (treatments) of the host A. nerii (in the young female instar), which are usual on butternut squash used in mass rearing, were used in this experiment: high (40-60 hosts per cm2, equivalent to 126-190 hosts per female parasitoid), médium (16-40 hosts per cm2, equivalent to 50-126 hosts per female parasitoid), and low (3-15 hosts per cm2, equivalent to 9-48 hosts per female parasitoid). One 24 h-old adult female, which had been in contact with adult males to mate, was introduced into each plastic cylinder in each of the three treatments. Within each treatment, females were exposed to the host for 24 h and for 6 consecutive days by changing the experimental unit every day to a new squash patch with the same host density in the same squash, or in a new squash in order to assure
the appropriate host stage. After 8-10 days, emerged adults were counted and sexed.
Experiment 2 was designed to study the effect of parasitoid density on the fecundity of A. melinus. Three parasitoid densities (treatments) were used in this experiment: high (eight adult females), médium (four adult females), and low (two adult females), each paired with a host population of 20 young female instars. Ratios host:parasitoid were 2.5, 5.0, and 10.0 respectively.
Experiment 3 was designed to study the effect of different honey sources on A. melinus survival, especially the suitability of honey + agar. Four different diets (treatments) were used in this experiment: 1) pure bee honey; 2) honey diluted with water to provide a concentration of 10% (volume); 3) a preparation of honey with agar; 4) the control, with no honey or water added. One A. melinus adult female aged 24 h was introduced into each cylinder and food was changed between 1-2 days, recording whether the parasitoid was dead or alive and whether it had fed on the host body.
In this study, host density did not influence the number of observed offspring per female per day (1.14 ± 0.15) or the sex ratio (0.32 ± 0.07 ♂) of A. melinus. Parasitoid density, on the other hand, did influence offspring production, with the higher parasitoid densities resulting in the lowest number of offspring (0.41 ± 0.07 per female per day). Medium and low parasitoid densities, meanwhile, produced similar numbers of offspring (0.83 ± 0.18 and 0.77 ± 0.13 per female per day, respectively). Sex ratio (0.43 ± 0.03 ♂) was not influenced by parasitoid density. The highest survival for A. melinus was achieved with honey (14.1 ± 1.2 days), but no statistical difference was observed with 10% honey. A mixture of honey, sugar and agar was not as good food source (only 3.0 ± 0.6 days of survival). Observed parasitoid host feeding was not continuous in the honey and 10% honey treatments, occurring only during 11.9 and 20.4% of the life-span, respectively. Maximum efficiency in offspring production per female was achieved when the host/parasitoid ratio was 5 to 10 hosts per female parasitoid per day. To maintain the lowest male bias of the offspring, female parasitoids should be in contact with the host for a period of no more than 3-4 days.
The files contain data on host density, parasitoid density and food source.

Currently, the fusion of technology and sport is inseparable. The integration of various
systems and devices has brought about significant transformations in established
sports practices, impacting not only the rules but also physiological, biomechanical,
and even psychological aspects.
The purpose of this study is to analyze the effect of attention intervention through a
video game on young soccer players.
Twelve young male soccer players were divided into two groups: control and
experimental. During the six-week training program, the experimental group received
attention training through a video game twice a week for 15 minutes per session. Preand
post-intervention measurements included a specific decision-making football test
and interviews with coaching staff. Additionally, success in the video game, muscular
activity, and sweat levels were monitored.
The experimental group demonstrated a significant improvement in video game
success following the intervention program, as indicated by the achieved level
(p=0.00). However, no significant differences were found between groups regarding
EMG activity and sweating (p>0.05). Prior to implementing the attention training
program, both groups exhibited similar data in variables related to decision-making
and execution mechanisms (%≤ 10%). Only two decision-making variables exceeded
10%, but remained below 15% (Shot_D = 13.35; Marking_with_Ball_D = -12.64).
Furthermore, changes in attacking action variables were more pronounced in
execution-related variables, except for Dribbling and Fixing. Conversely, in defensive
action variables, changes were greater in decision-related variables, except for
Marking with the ball and Marking without the ball.
The findings reveal that incorporating a specific attentional video game into the
football training program enhances decision-making compared to a program without
it. Therefore, it is advisable for practitioners to consider using this tool due to its high
efficiency in terms of economic and temporal costs, particularly in improving a key
psychological variable.

The Type VI secretion system (T6SS) is a bacterial nanoweapon that injects toxic effectors into prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells. It is widely found among gram-negative bacteria and provides a significant fitness advantage in interbacterial competition. Pseudomonas putida KT2440 possesses three T6SS clusters (K1-, K2- and K3-T6SS) that combat phytopathogens. This makes this strain a potent biocontrol agent that protects plants from pathogens and can be further enhanced by a better understanding of its T6SS regulation. Although the core components of T6SS are conserved, the elements controlling its regulation differ among bacterial species. T6SS activity is regulated by various factors acting at different levels, from transcription to post-translational modification, to ensure precise control of its activity. Here, we demonstrate the critical importance that the three Rsm proteins, RsmIEA, have in controlling the K1-T6SS structural components and related orphan elements at the post-transcriptional level in Pseudomonas putida. We identified multiple Rsm-binding sites responsible for directly repressing the translation of T6SS proteins (Hcp1 and Hcp5) and their associated effectors (Tke2 and Tke7). Derepression of K1-T6SS mRNA in the rsmIEA mutant led to enhanced translation and expression of the K1-T6SS components and effectors, and critically increased the number of cells in the population with assembled T6SS. This results in a greater capacity to secrete toxins and kill prey cells via the T6SS-dependent mechanism. Finally, we demonstrate the K1-T6SS ability to kill environmental pathogens, including Salmonella enterica and Erwinia amylovora.

SIDE EFFECTS OF DIFFERENT PESTICIDES USED IN CITRUS ON THE ADULT STAGE OF THE PARASITOID APHYTIS MELINUS DEBACH (HYMENOPTERA APHELINIDAE) AND ITS PROGENY [DATASET]
- González Zamora, José Enrique
- Castillo, María Luz
- Avilla Hernández, Carlos
Data obtained during the years 2010 and 2011 on the effect of 12 insecticides commonly used in citrus on the parasitoid Aphytis melinus. The insecticides were spinosad, azadirachtin, fenbutatin, fosetyl-Al, copper oxichloride, mancozeb, Pirimicarb, pyriproxifen, paraffinic oil, abamectin, chlorpyrifos, and lambda-cyhalothrin
The objective was to determine their effects on parasitoid survival and fecundity, and the duration of the residue of each pesticide.
The fresh residue assay was performed by spraying Petri dishes at laboratory concentrations using a Potter tower. Six to eight A. melinus adults were placed on each plate. Mortality was assessed at 24 hours. Surviving females of each Petri dish were transferred to a correspondent ventilated container with a piece of squash with drops of honey and an excess of Aspidiotus nerii scales. Females were left with the scales for 48-72 h to parasitize the hosts offered, and the resulting parasitoid offspring were counted and sexed following their emergence. A similar methodology was used to assess mortality using 7-day residuals.
The most toxic products found in the previous assays were selected to study their residue degradation over time. This experiment was an extended laboratory test,
where products were applied with a portable sprayer on young cv. Navelina orange trees, and the evaluation of residue persistence was made underlaboratory conditions. Three trees were sprayed with each pesticide at the maximum recommended field rate. Mortality was evaluated 1, 2, 4, 6, 9 and 11 weeks after the insecticide treatment, collecting leaves from the trees and placing them in Petri dishes where A. melinus adults were introduced.
Six of these pesticides were found to be harmless to moderately harmful to this parasitoid in a laboratory assay in closed Petri dishes: spinosad (bait formulation), azadirachtin, fenbutatin, fosetyl-Al, copper oxichloride, and mancozeb, with their scores on the reduction of beneficial capacity (RBC) index being between 21.4 and 94.6% after one week. The other six pesticides classified as harmful were tested on citrus plants to study their persistence over time under greenhouse conditions: Pirimicarb, pyriproxifen, paraffinic oil, abamectin, chlorpyrifos, and lambda-cyhalothrin. Most of these products reduced their negative effect on adults of A. melinus between one and six weeks after treatment, although lambdacyhalothrin was still harmful to parasitoids 11 weeks after application
The files contain data on parasitoid survival and fecundity of the different assays.
