HIGH-RESOLUTION BATHYMETRY OF THE NS FAULT ZONE IN THE ALBORAN SEA (WESTERN MEDITARRANEAN) [DATASET]

The dataset was acquired during the SHAKE project marine survey carried using an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) managed by Ifremer (France). The dataset was specifically acquired and processed by researchers from the Insitut de Ciències del Mar at CSIC to study the NS Fault system in the Alboran sea (western Mediterranean).-- Data acquisition was performed using a Kongsberg Maritime EM 2040 multibeam echosounder mounted on the AUVs IdefX operated by IFREMER (France). The AUVs surveyed the central area of the NSF, covering an area of approximately 43.6 km2 between latitudes 36°28.55'N and 36°33.84'N, and longitudes 3°02.26'W and 3°06.16'W. Operating the AUVs at 70 m above the seafloor enabled data acquisition at a grid resolution of 1 m. To ensure precise navigation, an ultra-short baseline (USBL) acoustic navigation system was integrated with the AUVs' inertial navigation. Following the survey, navigation and bathymetric data were refined and processed using the softwares CARAIBES 4.3 and CARIS HIPS&SIPS 9.0.13.
The dataet is a GeoTif image georeferenced in WGS 84 / UTM zone 30N (EPSG: 32630). It can be opened in any GIS software, The dataset has been used to map and characterize several fault scarps on the seafloor. In addition, it also shows the presence of pockmarks, The acquisition and analysis of the dataset was supported by the grants PRE2020-092738, PID2019-104668RB-I00 (STRENGTH) and PID2023-149462NB-I00 (GEOSEISMOD) funded by MCIN/AEI/ 10.13039/501100011033 and by “ERDF A way of making Europe”. The study acknowledges the “Severo Ochoa Center of Excellence” accreditation 2020-2023 (CEX2019-000928-S), High-resolution bathymetric georeferenced image (GeoTif)., Peer reviewed
