PERTURBATIVE APPROACH TO THE INTERACTION OF SOLITONS IN QUADRATIC NONLINEAR MEDIA

We investigate the interaction between one-dimensional bright solitary waves in quadratic nonlinear media. We use a perturbational approach via collective coordinates to reduce the full evolution equations to a set of coupled ordinary differential equations which provides a simple qualitative picture of the soliton interactions. We use the scheme to calculate the collision distance between equal amplitude solitons and compare the results with the outcome of direct numerical solution of the evolution equations. SPLITTING OF LIGHT BEAMS WITH PHASE DISLOCATIONS INTO SOLITONS IN QUADRATIC NONLINEAR MEDIA

We investigate the propagation of intense light beams in bulk quadratic nonlinear crystals under conditions for second-harmonic generation. We show numerically that input light beams with a spiral phase front dislocation self-split in the crystal into several spatial solitons. For input fundamental and its second harmonic gaussian beams the latter with a phase dislocation, the number and pattern of output solitons can be controlled by the material and wave parameters involved, and in particular by the input light intensity and by the topological charge of the dislocation. In second harmonic generation processes with a phase dislocation in the input fundamental beam the output pattern of the solitons may be controlled by a low-intensity double frequency gaussian beam., Peer Reviewed

STATIONARY WALKING SOLITONS IN BULK QUADRATIC NONLINEAR MEDIA

We study the mutual trapping of fundamental and second-harmonic light beams propagating in bulk quadratic nonlinear media in the presence of Poynting vector beam walk-off. We show numerically the existence of a two-parameter family of (2 + 1)-dimensional stationary, spatial walking solitons. We have found that the solitons exist at various values of material parameters with different wave intensities and soliton velocities. We discuss the differences between (2 + 1) and (1 + 1)-dimensional walking solitons and between walking and non-walking solitons., Peer Reviewed

SOLITON EVOLUTION IN QUASI-PHASE-MATCHED SECOND-HARMONIC GENERATION

We investigate the formation and evolution of spatial solitons with light beams propagating in quadratic nonlinear media under conditions for second-harmonic generation in quasi-phase-matched samples. We study the properties of the solitons as a function of the periodicity of the domain-reversal process involved in the quasi-phase-matching techniques, and we show the effects introduced by random shifts of the nominal domain length. © 1997 Optical Society of America, Peer Reviewed

Second-harmonic generation of light in bulk quadratic non-linear media with intense input beams containing phase dislocations is studied numerically under conditions for TypeI phase-matching. We investigate how, above a threshold light intensity, the input beams self-split along the azimuthal direction into a pattern of separate beams which then form a set of spatial solitons. The mechanism of such a behaviour is the azimuthal modulational instability of the ring-shaped, mutually trapped fundamental and second-harmonic beams containing the phase dislocations., Peer Reviewed

SELF-SPLITTING OF BEAMS INTO SPATIAL SOLITONS IN PLANAR WAVEGUIDES MADE OF QUADRATIC NONLINEAR MEDIA

The propagation of intense light beams in planar optical waveguides made of quadratic nonlinear media under conditions for second-harmonic generation is investigated. It is shown numerically that under appropriate conditions, input light beams break up into several spatial solitons that separate from each other and exit the waveguide at different positions. This paper reports the results of a series of numerical experiments and analytical investigations that were performed to elucidate the dynamics of the self-splitting process and discusses the implications of the results to the implementation of an eigenvalue switching device., Peer Reviewed
