ATOS-1 CRUISE, RV HESPÉRIDES

  • Duarte, Carlos M.
  • CSIC - Unidad de Tecnología Marina (UTM)
ATOS-1 Cruise (29HE20070627) carried out on the Research Vessel Hespérides in 2007, ATOS: Atmospheric inputs of organic carbon and pollutants to the polar ocean: rates, significance and outlook. The ATOS project aims at resolving the increasing role of air-sea exchanges of materials in the polar sea by (1) quantifying the atmospheric inputs of organic carbon and key organic pollutants both in aerosol and gaseous phases; (2) elucidating the role of sea ice cover in controlling these rates and the inputs associated to sea ice melting; (3) evaluating the fate of the materials, by assessing their use by biota and transference up the food webs, and (4) evaluating the effects on microplankton as the entry points of the materials in the food web, through evaluations of cell mortality in relation to pollutant inputs and parallel increases in ultraviolet raditation dosage, and the evaluation of the effect of the materials on planktonic primary production and community respiration. This project will advance current knowledge on the relevance of air-sea interactions for the metabolism, and flow of pollutants, of pelagic polar ecosystems, as well as provide a basis to forecast the effects of future reductions of sea icea in polar seas and oceans on the functioning of the pelagic ecosystems. Moreover, as the atmospheric materials that enter the sea in polar regions are likely to be introduced elsewhere, primarily on land, this research will provide novel insights onto the role of the atmosphere as a vector linking loading of organic carbon and pollutants in temperate and tropical latitudes and the inputs of these materials to polar seas and oceans. Moreover, the process-based examination of the response of microplankton to these inputs will allow formulation of models to forecast responses to future scenarios

SVAIS CRUISE, RV HESPÉRIDES

  • Camerlenghi, Angelo
  • CSIC - Unidad de Tecnología Marina (UTM)
SVAIS Cruise (29HE20070802) carried out on the Research Vessel Hespérides in 2007, The aim of the cruise is to reconstruct the changes that occurred on the seabed southwest of the Svalbard Islands (Norway) since the beginning of the glacial conditions, three million years ago, up to the present time. Thus, a better knowledge of the natural evolution of glaciers during past times, warmer than today, will help us a better understanding of current and future climate changes. 8,600 km2 of the seafloor surveyed for bathymetry and subbottom profiling , 516 km of single channel seismic reflection profiles 31 meters of sediment recovered (6 cores)

  • CSIC - Unidad de Tecnología Marina (UTM)
EUROLEON Cruise (29HE20071006) carried out on the Research Vessel Hespérides in 2007, Study the relationships between the current morphology of the seabed, the sedimentary coating and the transport processes of active and past sediments. Integrated analysis of the sedimentary drainage systems of the continental margin, incorporating a "seascape" modeling component that includes the most determining control factors and the development rates of the morphosedimentary elements that make up the margin and the deep basin. The ROV transects were predefined from multibeam bathymetry in a seamount area in October 2007 during the ‘EUROLEON’ cruise on board R/V Hespérides, along the Iberian margin of the Valencia Trough. A video survey was performed with a ROV (Max Rover Mark II) equipped with two video cameras and with zoom (central and lateral view) and 6 light focus. The dive was conducted between 460 and 800 m depth. Videos were analyzed in real time onboard and observed animals were identified up to the possible minimum taxonomical level

TIC-MOC CRUISE, RV HESPÉRIDES

  • Pelegrí, Josep Lluís
  • CSIC - Unidad de Tecnología Marina (UTM)
TIC-MOC Cruise (29HE20150305) carried out on the Research Vessel Hespérides in 2015, TIC-MOC Tipping Corners in the Meridional Overturning Circulation. The principal objective of the cruise is to characterize the dynamics of the encountering of the Brazil and Malvinas Currents in the Brazil-Malvinas Confluence region. Specific objectives include the characterization of the water masses arriving to the confluence region, the description of the transformations experienced by these water masses , the definition of the frontal systems, the computation of water and property balances, and a description of the principal biogeochemical processes. During the TIC-MOC cruise we will make several stops at specific points (hydrographic stations) to collect data that will allow us to characterize this frontal system. In the hydrographic stations, measurements of physicochemical parameters (speed, temperature, salinity, and turbidity, all depending on the pressure) and biogeochemical (fluorescence, nutrients and dissolved oxygen) will be made. To do this, a rosette will be lowered to the bottom for taking samples of water at 24 depths, together with a CTD (measurements with high vertical resolution of salinity, temperature, dissolved oxygen, fluorescence and turbidity) and LADCP (measurements of the velocity of the Water). The samples of water that we will collect will be used for the determination of inorganic nutrients, microbial respiration, carbon and particulate and dissolved organic nitrogen, particulate and total organic phosphorus

MAFIA CRUISE, RV HESPÉRIDES

  • Hernández León, Santiago
  • CSIC - Unidad de Tecnología Marina (UTM)
MAFIA Cruise (29HE20150403) carried out on the Research Vessel Hespérides in 2015, Migrants and Active Flux In the Atlantic Ocean-MAFIA. In the ocean there is a set of organisms that perform vertical migrations, with daily periodicity. These are organisms of zooplankton and micronecton (mainly small fish and crustaceans), which during the hours of light occupy the dark region of the ocean and at night migrate to the layers closest to the surface. These animals play a very important role in marine trophic chains, since they are the food of large migrating fish, birds and marine mammals. Its role in the oceanic carbon flux is just what we have been studying in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. The main objective of the Project is to estimate the active flux in warm waters with a global perspective. We propose two cruises during winter-spring and autumn covering the subtropical, tropical and equatorial zones of the Atlantic Ocean . Fifteen oceanographic stations will be performed along a transect from the Canary Islands to the equivalent latitude in the South Atlantic Ocean. Oceanographic features will be studied thought CTD-rosette casts perfomed in all the stations, and plankton and micronekton abundances and distribution patterns will be analyzed through samples taken from the neuston to the bathypelagic zone in selected stations (upwelling and oligotrophic regions)
