GEBRA Cruise (29HE19931203) carried out on the Research Vessel Hespérides in 1993, Geological evolution of the Bransfield Basin and the South Scotia Sea Ridge. Work has been carried out with multibeam, single-channel reflection seismic, parametric BPS probe, magnetometry, gravity cores extraction and instrument anchoring. These techniques have allowed to characterize in great detail the morphostructure, the sedimentary coating and the magnetic anomalies of the studied area

GEBRAP Cruise (29HE19961203) carried out on the Research Vessel Hespérides in 1996, Geological evolution of the Pacific margin of West Antarctica: Seafloor spreading and Plate Tectonics. Objectives of the campaign: 1) Morphostructural study of the sectors of the Bransfield Basin, and surroundings, not previously investigated by means equivalent to those that equip the BIO Hesperides, with special attention to submarine volcanism and its relationship with the segmentation and evolution of geodynamics of the basin. 2) Morphostructural investigation of the collision between the extinct dorsal of the Drake's Plate and the South Shetland Trench, and between the trench and the main fracture zones. 3) Contribution of new elements for the knowledge of the evolution of the Pacific margin of the Antarctic Peninsula in its structural, sedimentary, and chronological components. 4) Detailed analysis of the morphology and internal structure of the sedimentary bodies and erosive forms of the Pacific margin of the Antarctic Peninsula, in the northern Bellinghausen Sea. 5) Contribution to the improvement of seismic stratigraphy models in glacial-marine contexts. 6) Characterization of the petrology and the age of the volcanic buildings of the Bransfield Basin. 7) Determination of detail morphology and sedimentary fill along the axis of Gerlache Strait. 8) Investigation of the morphology of detail, the structure and sedimentary coating on the continental shelf of the King Jorge Island. 9) Study of deep-seated benthic organisms. 10) Estimation of krill biomass

  • CSIC - Unidad de Tecnología Marina (UTM)
MARINADA Cruise (29HE20020803) carried out on the Research Vessel Hespérides in 2002, Continental Slope Stability (COSTA-ETC) .The main objective of COSTA is to assess the stability of the European continental slope in relation both to the natural processes that occur in the slope and to the effects of human activities (for example the extraction of hydrocarbons in deep waters). This objective will be achieved through rigorous analysis of 1) landslides that have occurred from prehistory to the present. 2) areas conducive to sliding. 3) areas of interest for deepwater oil and gas exploration

CONAFRICA CRUISE, RV HESPÉRIDES

  • Hernández León, Santiago
  • CSIC - Unidad de Tecnología Marina (UTM)
CONAFRICA Cruise (29HE20060322) carried out on the Research Vessel Hespérides in 2006, "The African connection in the waters of the Canary Current" CONAFRICA. The objective of this project is to study the drift of zooplankton and ichthyoplankton in the filaments that occur in the African upwelling . To do this, samples of the upwelling will be taken and it will be verified that the species of larvae of fish transported coincide with the presence of larvae of the same species in the Great Canary platform . The work area will be swept continuously to obtain acoustic density maps. The zooplankton and ichthyoplankton will be analyzed from the vessel, obtaining synoptic maps of the hydrological conditions, fluorescence, abundance and metabolic activity of the plankton and the distribution of pelagic fish

EUROLEON CRUISE, RV HESPÉRIDES

  • Canals, Miquel
  • CSIC - Unidad de Tecnología Marina (UTM)
EUROLEON Cruise (29HE20071006) carried out on the Research Vessel Hespérides in 2007, Study the relationships between the current morphology of the seabed, the sedimentary coating and the transport processes of active and past sediments. Integrated analysis of the sedimentary drainage systems of the continental margin, incorporating a "seascape" modeling component that includes the most determining control factors and the development rates of the morphosedimentary elements that make up the margin and the deep basin. The ROV transects were predefined from multibeam bathymetry in a seamount area in October 2007 during the ‘EUROLEON’ cruise on board R/V Hespérides, along the Iberian margin of the Valencia Trough. A video survey was performed with a ROV (Max Rover Mark II) equipped with two video cameras and with zoom (central and lateral view) and 6 light focus. The dive was conducted between 460 and 800 m depth. Videos were analyzed in real time onboard and observed animals were identified up to the possible minimum taxonomical level

MAFIA CRUISE, RV HESPÉRIDES

  • Hernández León, Santiago
  • CSIC - Unidad de Tecnología Marina (UTM)
MAFIA Cruise (29HE20150403) carried out on the Research Vessel Hespérides in 2015, Migrants and Active Flux In the Atlantic Ocean-MAFIA. In the ocean there is a set of organisms that perform vertical migrations, with daily periodicity. These are organisms of zooplankton and micronecton (mainly small fish and crustaceans), which during the hours of light occupy the dark region of the ocean and at night migrate to the layers closest to the surface. These animals play a very important role in marine trophic chains, since they are the food of large migrating fish, birds and marine mammals. Its role in the oceanic carbon flux is just what we have been studying in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. The main objective of the Project is to estimate the active flux in warm waters with a global perspective. We propose two cruises during winter-spring and autumn covering the subtropical, tropical and equatorial zones of the Atlantic Ocean . Fifteen oceanographic stations will be performed along a transect from the Canary Islands to the equivalent latitude in the South Atlantic Ocean. Oceanographic features will be studied thought CTD-rosette casts perfomed in all the stations, and plankton and micronekton abundances and distribution patterns will be analyzed through samples taken from the neuston to the bathypelagic zone in selected stations (upwelling and oligotrophic regions)
