HESANT CRUISE, RV HESPÉRIDES

  • Maldonado, Andrés
  • CSIC - Unidad de Tecnología Marina (UTM)
HESANT Cruise (29HE19921214) carried out on the Research Vessel Hespérides in 1992, Tectonics and sedimentation in the South Shetland arc and Sheckleton fracture zone (HESANT). The objectives include geodynamic aspects linked to the tectonic evolution of plates in the continental margin of the Antarctic Peninsula, paleoceanographic studies related to global changes registered by the deposits and mechanisms of continental margin construction. Among the tectonic aspects, from the establishment of the structure, the detailed reconstruction of the plate kinematics is considered, while the paleoceanographic and paleoclimatic evolution has been approached from the identification of the diposicional processes and the analysis of the seismic stratigraphy. sequential, all in order to establish the factors that have influenced the development models of the basins and continental margins linked to the Antarctic Peninsula

SCAN-1997 Cruise (29HE19970114) carried out on the Research Vessel Hespérides in 1997, Geodynamics and Paleoceanography of continental margins and basins: northern Antarctic Peninsula. (SCAN´ 97). Objectives of the SCAN 97 campaign: 1) Complete the study of the Powell Basin. 2) In the northwestern Wedell Sea, the mechanisms of continental fragmentation and backarc basin development models have been studied. The structure, seismic stratigraphy and evolution have been investigated, with the objective of studying the Cenozoic subduction along the Jane backarc and Jane arc. 3) The border between the Antarctic / Scotia plates has been studied in order to establish the current and Cenozoic dynamics between this larger plate limit in the South Atlantic

ANTPAC CRUISE, RV HESPÉRIDES

  • Maldonado, Andrés
  • CSIC - Unidad de Tecnología Marina (UTM)
ANTPAC Cruise (29HE19971201) carried out on the Research Vessel Hespérides in 1997, Geodynamics and paleoceanography of the plate and margin limits of the Antarctic Peninsula in the Pacific (ANTPAC). The ANT 97/98 campaign of Geophysics and Marine Geology has focused on the analysis of the northern part of the Antarctic Peninsula, as well as the relationships between the main lithospheric elements that are located in the area on the Pacific margin and tDrake Passage. The thematic objectives include the tectonic and paleooceanographic study of selected segments of the active and passive margin, and the boundary between the tectonic plates existing in the area, including the analysis of a triple point. Experiments have been carried out to distinguish between factors linked to local tectonics and those of global character, climatic-eustatic changes, which have controlled the development of the various depositional provinces. To this end, profiles have been collected using multi-channel and single-channel reflection seismic techniques, sonobuoys, multibeam probes, high-resolution seismic, gravimetry and magnetometry

SCAN-2001 CRUISE, RV HESPÉRIDES

  • Maldonado, Andrés
  • CSIC - Unidad de Tecnología Marina (UTM)
SCAN-2001 Cruise (29HE20001207) carried out on the Research Vessel Hespérides in 2000, Geodynamics of the Scotia plate edge / Antarctic and Antarctic Deep Water paleoceanography. The project and the 2001 SCAN campaign focus on the analysis of areas that comprise the boundary between the Antarctic and Scotia plates. The basic objectives are oriented to the analysis of continental fragmentation processes and the creation of oceanographic basins. The thematic aspects include the geodynamic, petrological and seismic stratigraphy study of directional large faults, the development of backarc ocean basins, the creation of continental blocks and the paleoceanographic analysis on the evolution of Deep Antarctic Water. Special attention is paid to the establishment of the geological processes that take place at the edges of the plates. The aim is to distinguish between the factors linked to local phenomena (tectonic, sedimentary contribution) and those of a global nature (climatic-eustatic change, glacial cycles) which have controlled the paleoceanographic processes and the development of the various depositional provinces

SCAN-2013_CODEREC Cruise (29HE20130202) carried out on the Research Vessel Hespérides in 2013, SCAN 2013 ( SCotia-ANtarctic) & 'Lithological and chronostratigraphic study of recent sedimentary units of Puerto Foster (Deception Island, Antarctica), COREDEC ' During the 2013 SCAN cruise, two basic objectives related to the evolution of the Western Antarctica: (a) plate tectonics and the development of ocean basins in the Scotia Sea and Straits of Brandsfield, and (b) the paleoceanographic processes that were derived from the establishment of the Circumpolar Current Antarctic (ACC) after the opening of the Drake Passage and the development of Antarctic Deep Water, with its implications and possible contribution to global change. High resolution (SAR) seismic reflection profiles, very high resolution seismic profiles have been made using the TOPAS system, EM 120 multibeam echo sounder, magnetometry and gravimetry in the Scotia Sea and Strait of Brandsfield. 17 SAR profiles have been obtained, with all operating systems with a total of 2679.4 km. They have made a total of 47 lines with TOPAS, MAG and GRAV, along a route of 5,025 km. They have dredged, in addition, 5 morphological reliefs and 3 gravity witnesses have been taken in 1 high with outcropping series. The dredges carried out have provided excellent quality samples of the igneous and metamorphic basement of the Scotia Sea. The objective of CODEREC has been to obtain Seven sediment cores from the inner bay of Deception Island
