CLINICAL TRIALS FOR EVIDENCE-BASED MEDICINE IN SPANISH (CT-EBM-SP) CORPUS AND WORD-EMBEDDINGS

  • Campillos-Llanos, Leonardo
  • Capllonch-Carrión, Adrián
  • Valverde-Mateos, Ana
  • Moreno-Sandoval, Antonio

The NLPMedTerm project aims at providing the research community with resources for natural language processing (NLP) in the health domain for Spanish. A Work Package of the project is a corpus texts annotated with medical entities as a resource for experiments in Named Entity Recognition. The corpus is aimed at training machine-learning models incorporating state-of-the-art neural network approaches. Another Work Package are the word embeddings from the medical domain.

The Clinical Trials for Evidence-Based-Medicine in Spanish (CT-EBM-SP) corpus is a collection of 1200 texts about clinical trials studies and clinical trials announcements: - 500 abstracts from journals published under a Creative Commons license, e.g. available in PubMed or the Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO) - 700 clinical trials announcements published in the European Clinical Trials Register and Repositorio Español de Estudios Clínicos The word-embeddings were trained with fastText and using the following parameters: skipgram model, window size = 10, dimensions = 100, minimum frequency = 1, number of negatives sampled = 10, learning rate = 1e-4. We used texts from the European Medicines Agency corpus (∼13.9M tokens) and articles from the Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO) repository (∼25M tokens)

MICRORNAS-MEDIATED REGULATION OF INSULIN SIGNALING IN WHITE ADIPOSE TISSUE DURING AGING: ROLE OF CALORIC RESTRICTION

  • Medina Gómez, Gema
Our work demonstrates that alterations in post-transcriptional gene expression because of miRNAs dysregulation might represent an endogenous mechanism by which insulin response in the subcutaneous fat depot is already affected at middle age. Importantly, caloric restriction could prevent this modulation, demonstrating that certain miRNAs could constitute potential biomarkers of age-related metabolic alterations.

This research raises the potential use of coordination polymers as new useful materials in two essential research fields, allowing the obtaining of a new multi artificial enzyme with the capacity to inhibit the growth of bacteria resistance. The fine selection of the ligands allows the designs of a new 2D Coordination Polymer (CP), with the formula [Cu2(IBA)2(OH2)4]n·6nH2O, by the combination of Cu(II) as the metal center with a pseudo amino acid (H2IBA =Isophthaloyl bis β-alanine). Quantitative total X-Ray Fluorescence (TXRF) analyses show that the obtained CP can gradually release Cu(II) ions. Additionally, this CP can be nano-processed and transformed into the metal-organic gel (MOG) by using different Cu(II) salts concentrations and the application of ultrasounds. Considering its nanometric dimensions, the slow Cu(II) release and its simple processability, its performance as an artificial enzyme, and its antibacterial ability were explored. The results obtained show the first nano-coordination polymer acting as an artificial multienzyme (peroxidase, catalase, and superoxodismutase) exhibiting antibacterial activity in the presence of hydrogen peroxide, with selective behavior for three bacterium strains (S. spiritovirum, A. faecales, and B. cereus). Indeed, this CP shows a more robust inhibition capacity for Sphingobacterium. Going beyond that, as there are no comfortable and practically clinical tests capable of detecting the presence of Sphingobacteria, the compound can be easily embedded to form moldable gelatin that will facilitate the handling and low-cost commercial kits
