ECOQUIM Cruise (29HE20060102) carried out on the Research Vessel Hespérides in 2006, Chemical Ecology of Antarctic invertebrates. The objective of this research is to obtain bioactive substances from Antarctic benthic invertebrates that provide information on the chemical ecology of the species involved, and that may be useful for their pharmacological potential. The material will be collected in the Bransfield Strait and later processed at the Gabriel de Castilla Antarctic Spanish Base on Deception Island.The ECOQUIM-2 cruise was carried out around Deception Island, Livingston Island and their vicinities (South Shetland Islands) on board the Spanish RV BIOHespe´rides. Two different sampling devices (Agassiz trawl and rocky dredge) were used to obtain the samples at depths from 25–215 m

BENTART-06 Cruise (29HE20060115) carried out on the Research Vessel Hespérides in 2006, The objective of this research is the study of benthic ecosystem in the southern Shetland Islands, Antarctic Peninsula and Bellinghausen Sea, very unknown areas. Samples of physical-chemical parameters of the water, biological and sediment column will be made, using dredges, biological fishing nets and an underwater robot to obtain photographs and record video. The analysis will allow us to see the effects of Agassiz-type trawl fishing techniques, as well as to establish a protocol for the minimization of the negative effects of these gear and the conservation of the benthic ecosystem

CONAFRICA Cruise (29HE20060322) carried out on the Research Vessel Hespérides in 2006, "The African connection in the waters of the Canary Current" CONAFRICA. The objective of this project is to study the drift of zooplankton and ichthyoplankton in the filaments that occur in the African upwelling . To do this, samples of the upwelling will be taken and it will be verified that the species of larvae of fish transported coincide with the presence of larvae of the same species in the Great Canary platform . The work area will be swept continuously to obtain acoustic density maps. The zooplankton and ichthyoplankton will be analyzed from the vessel, obtaining synoptic maps of the hydrological conditions, fluorescence, abundance and metabolic activity of the plankton and the distribution of pelagic fish

SWIM Cruise (29HE20060531) carried out on the Research Vessel Hespérides in 2006, Earthquake and Tsunami Hazards in the Southwest Iberian Margin : High-resolution imaging of active faults and paleoseismic signature (SWIM) During June 2006 we carried out the ESF-EuroMargins SWIM marine geophysical cruise on board the Spanish RV Hespérides (PI. E. Gràcia) with the main objective to characterize the geometry, deep structure and timing of deformation of the active faults located at the westernmost Gulf of Cadiz (SW Iberian Margin). We acquired sixteen high-resolution multi-channel seismic (MCS) profiles together with Simrad EM120 swath-bathymetry and TOPAS sub-bottom profiler, totalizing more than 2700 km of data

CARPOS Cruise (29HE20061011) carried out on the Research Vessel Hespérides in 2006, "Carbon fluxes mediated by Plankton in Subtropical Oligotrophic environments: a Lagrangian approach (CARPOS)". CARPOS proposes as a general objective to quantify the net metabolic balance of carbon in the photic layer of the central and peripheral subtropical North Atlantic region using a Lagrangian approximation ( deployment of drifter buoys) . This objective is broken down into 4 specific objectives: 1) verify that the central zone of the subtropical turn of the North Atlantic presents a net balance of the neutral or positive planktonic community, 2) construct and compare metabolic balances in vitro and in situ in two contrasting oligotrophic regions, 3) quantify the effect of small-scale physical variability on the productivity of the region and evaluate its influence on the net metabolic balance and 4) to evaluate the effect of methodological limitations potentially associated with the performance of in vitro experiments on the metabolic balance of this oceanic region
