CRESCENT-1 Cruise (29HE19940930) carried out on the Research Vessel Hespérides in 1994, Morphostructural control of sedimentary record and current sediment transfer in the Central-Eastern Atlantic: Agadir canyon and Hierro Island 1) Study in detail the morpho structure of the Agadir Canyon, with special incidence in the transition area between the mouth of the canyon and the channel and the channel of the turbiditic system, determining the morphology, geometry, stratigraphy and nature of the associated deposits. 2) Study the current sedimentary activity in the submarine canyons and the geological processes. The effect of current dynamic processes on the sedimentary record will be evaluated by analyzing the impact that similar processes could have had in the past. 3) Map the areas of sedimentary instability and establish the relative importance of the instability processes as modeling modifying agents in the morph-structure of the slope, base-slope and basin. 4) Establish relations between the processes of canalized transport, sedimentary instability and mass landslides, and the development of deposits of "debris flows" or turbidites in slopes and basins. Determine the factors - changes in sea level, seismic and / or volcanic activity, which control this interaction. 5) Assign the chronology of the seismic reflectors in the high resolution seismic profiles of BPS based on the chrono-stratigraphic units of the DSDP Sites. 415, 416 in the area of the Agadir basin

MAYC-95 Cruise (29HE19951004) carried out on the Research Vessel Hespérides in 1995, Continental margin and deep basins: sedimentary record variable. During the campaign of October 1995 two types of scientific activities have been carried out: 1) Physical oceanography studies in transit between Cartagena and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria: 10 CTD stations up to 1000 m and 70 XBT stations up to 800 m. Continuous measurements with thermosalinograph and currents with ADCP. The salinity of the samples was calculated with the autosal. 2) Studies of marine geology on the continental margin of Agadir and the Agadir basin (Morocco): 13 seismic profiles of air cannons and TOPAS system, 3 EM-2 echosounder profiles, 13 gravimetric and magnetometric profiles. The different techniques used have allowed the morphological and seismic recognition of the system formed by the continental margin of Agadir and the Agadir Basin in order to quantify the transfer of sediments from the mainland to the Agadir Basin and to establish the chronology of the important events sedimentary

SAGAS CRUISE, RV HESPÉRIDES

  • Alonso, Belén
  • CSIC - Unidad de Tecnología Marina (UTM)
SAGAS Cruise (29HE20081122) carried out on the Research Vessel Hespérides in 2008, This project intends to study, through a multidisciplinary geological and geophysical approach, the current structure and recent evolution of the Gibraltar arch system (sag), which includes the basins and margins of the Alboran and Algerian-Balearic sea and its surroundings, the orogen bético-rifeño and the accretion prism of the Gulf of Cádiz. The objective is to gain a better understanding of the dynamics of the internal processes that affect the lithosphere and the earth's crust, the dynamics of external processes responsible for morphology, sedimentation and geoenvironment, and the interrelation between deep and superficial processes. The specific objectives refer to processes and mechanisms that occur at different scales, and therefore require complementary approaches, activities and methods. The project would increase the geological and geophysical infrastructure in the Spanish Mediterranean and is of interest for allowing actions aimed at preventing and designing contingency plans for geological and environmental risks in a region in which considerable earthquakes and underwater landslides occur

SAGAS-BIS Cruise (29SG20100609) carried out on the Research Vessel Sarmiento de Gamboa in 2010, The Gibraltar Arc System: Geodynamic Processes in the South Margin. The SAGASbis project intends to study, through a multidisciplinary geological and geophysical approach, the recent evolution of the Spanish margin and the Alborán Sea basins, with the aim of 1) better understanding the dynamics of the external processes responsible for morphology and sedimentation in the South-Iberian continental margins 2) analyze the interrelation between deep and superficial processes 3) determine the stratigraphic architecture in adjacent margin and basin segments and 4) characterize submarine and paleoseismic morphologies, paying special attention to turbiditic and instability systems Plio-Quaternary sedimentary. The area under study is located in a region where there are considerable earthquakes and underwater landslides, which is why this project is of great interest in order to design preventive actions and contingency plans for geological and environmental risks. At the same time, the exploration of this area will serve to detect the presence of hydrocarbons. This project has carried out a geological campaign aimed at the acquisition of acoustic and seismic data from the seabed and the collection of sediment cores
