ELEFANTE-12 Cruise (29HE20120119) carried out on the Research Vessel Hespérides in 2012, A physical-geological mooring is installed at the East of Elephant Island in order to monitor the presence / absence of the Antarctic slope front on the south slope of the South Scotia Sea, and to study its role in the modification of intermediate waters of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current. The addition of a sediment trap will study the flow of sediments associated with the dynamics of the area and identify terrigenous and biogenic composition. 1) Placement of an anchor constituted by current meters and temperature sensors, salinity and pressure at different depths, in addition to a sediment trap placed near the bottom. The anchor has a length of about 700 m and can be installed on a background of about 1200 m. 2 )Completion of several transects for water sampling using CTD. The purpose of these transects is to calibrate the anchored instruments and carry out a hydrographic survey of the slope front and the southern border of the circumpolar current at the moment of anchoring. The CTDs will be made to the bottom

BIOCANT-1 CRUISE, RV SARMIENTO DE GAMBOA

  • Acuña Fernández, José Luis
  • CSIC - Unidad de Tecnología Marina (UTM)
BIOCANT-1 Cruise (29SG20120301) carried out on the Research Vessel Sarmiento de Gamboa in 2012, The general objective of the project is twofold. In the first place, the aim is to understand the effects of the existing teleconnections between the Cantabrian Sea and the North-Western Mediterranean Sea and their impacts on the deep ecosystem, both pelagic and benthic. And second, to know how the transfer of the signal from external forcings to the deep ecosystem determines the structure of the community and population dynamics, thus affecting the living resources of greater commercial interest. Objective of the cruise: To install 6 moorings in the Avilés Canyon region. During the cruise lines equipped with current meters, mini-CTDs and automatic particle traps were deployment, which will collect the materials that sink from the surface area to the seabed, several thousand meters deep. In addition, samples of benthos and plankton were taken in order to reconstruct the trophic structure of the ecosystem and elucidate its functioning

GALINCLIMARCH-1 CRUISE, RV SARMIENTO DE GAMBOA

  • Rey, Daniel
  • CSIC - Unidad de Tecnología Marina (UTM)
GALINCLIMARCH-1 Cruise (29SG20120402) carried out on the Research Vessel Sarmiento de Gamboa in 2012, GALINCLIMARCH - Galicia Internal Basin Paleoclimatic Sedimentary Archives: Transport, Provenances, Hydrology and Reliability. The sediments of the Galician Interior Basin realm are capable of recording the peculiar conditions of the last glacial‐interglacial dynamics transition into the current interglacial and their evolution into present day, as they are influenced by the Thermohaline Circulation (THC) and because their proximity to the important continental land‐mass of western Iberia. The knowledge of the rates and magnitudes of change of this system is critical to understand its climate dynamics, processes and feedbacks, and hence its role on a local to sub‐regional scale. The inference of these climatic mechanisms encrypted in the deep‐sea sedimentary record needs to constrain the spatial and temporal scales of the sedimentary processes involved, in particular the identification of source areas, pathways and transport, storage times and hydrodynamic conditions. To adequately assess these encrypted sedimentary archives it is instrumental to identify the sedimentary expression of the main processes and forcements involved and accurately determine the spatial and temporal scales, rates and magnitudes of the processes and feedbacks that generate these records. This proposal aims to carry out a high‐resolution reconstruction of the transport time, provenance, sediment fluxes, wave climate, bottom‐current variability and post‐depositional alteration in a number of surficial samples and cores from the Galician Interior Basin. This project will provide a first insight into the relation between the last North Atlantic climate oscillation and the local regional components including abrupt climate changes (i.e. H events) and local events since the end of the last glacial period from a paleoclimatic proxies perspective. We will use a twofold approach by first constraining the current sedimentary conditions to their associated local wave climate and North Atlantic regional forcements to subsequently infer the paleoenvironmental conditions from the past 30‐50 ky sedimentary record. Firstly, analysing and modelling the present hydraulic conditions from newly acquired and historical wave climate and oceanographic records from the study area will study the current sedimentary conditions and forcements. These data will be linked to the present day sedimentation conditions by direct measurements of present day sedimentation and oceanographic conditions, supported by moored sediment traps, CTD, Doppler records and surficial samples. Epifauna, infauna, microfauna and sediment microestructure will also be studied. Subsequently we will udertake a multidisciplinary study combining high‐resolution geochemical, physical properties, environmental magnetic sediment derived records with high precision U‐series isotopes analyses in a well‐constrained geochronological framework. Further support will be provided by seismic‐acoustic data acquisition. The combination of these sedimentological, micropaleontological, geochemical and geophysical tools will help in better resolving the role of current strength, circulation and sediment provenance changes also considering across vs. along margin transport balances in the sedimentary record of the Galician Internal basin over the last 30‐50 ky

MONTERA Cruise (29SG20120423) carried out on the Research Vessel Sarmiento de Gamboa in 2012, MONTERA‐0412 scientific cruise has been conducted along two areas of the continental margins of southern Iberia: the Gulf of Cadiz and the Alboran Sea. The objective of the MONTERA coordinated project is to know the processes and mechanisms generated by seamounts located on continental margins, along with the that affect their stability and control their evolution. For this, the project covers three Main specific objectives: • The morphological and tectonic characterization of seamounts. • The stratigraphic and sedimentological characterization of the coating-sedimentary of the seamounts and adjacent areas during the Neo-Quaternary. • The establishment of evolutionary geological models in the Neogene-Quaternary

TOPOMED-GASBATS CRUISE, RV SARMIENTO DE GAMBOA

  • Comas, M. C.
  • CSIC - Unidad de Tecnología Marina (UTM)
TOPOMED-GASBATS Cruise (29SG20120517) carried out on the Research Vessel Sarmiento de Gamboa in 2012, The scientific goal of the cruise is to improve our knowledge of the geodynamic evolution of the Gibraltar Arc System (GAS) from improving the existing dataset in particular margin segments of the westernmost Mediterranean. Particularly, the Miocene to Holocene tectonic evolution of the shallow crust, as determined by its deformation pattern, tectonic partitioning and kinematics, neotectonics and active tectonics. The survey was conducted in three different crustal scenarios: 1) a relatively thinned continental crust at the Palomares and Cartagena margins; 2) an anomalous or oceanic crust at the ocean-continent boundary located at the foot of theses margins, and to the east of the Alboran Basin; and 3) a highly fractured and sismogenic continental crust at the Alboran southern margin (Morocco Margin). The survey consisted in acquiring multichannel seismic profiles and concurrent, multibeam bathymetry, and magnetometer and gravimeter records
