TRANSMOW CRUISE, RV HESPÉRIDES

Oceanographic data acquired during the TRANSMOW Cruise (29HE20210428) on board the Research Vessel Hespérides in 2021., The objective of the TRANSMOW cruise twofold: in the first place, to sample the waters on their previous and outgoing route from the Mediterranean MOW (Mediterranean outflows water) along the western Mediterranean, the Gulf of Cádiz and the Iberian-Atlantic and Cantabrian margins, and secondly, to sample marine surface sediments and long cores following depth transects at key points of the described trajectory. The motivation for this sampling arises from the new possibilities opened up with the recent development of the LIRA-Panthalassa laboratories, unique leading analytical infrastructures in Spain that allow to be carried out a new type of chemical and geological oceanography , until now inaccessible to the Spanish community. Specifically, it is intended to characterize in detail the signal of isotopes of Nd (εNd) and rare earths (REE) of the leaving waters of the Mediterranean, among other physical-chemical parameters. Sediment sampling is intended to validate the transmission of this signal in the geological record and thus apply this knowledge in the analysis of the oceanographic evolution of the MOW at different time scales in relation to past climate transitions.

ANTOM-2 CRUISE, RV HESPÉRIDES

ANTOM-2 Cruise (29HE202201188) carried out on the Research Vessel Hespérides in 2022., The sampling cruise ANTOM-2 is the second of the two campaigns of the ANTOM project, which aims to understand the long-range transport and biogeochemistry of organic pollutants at global scale and how these reach the Antarctic Ocean, as well the pollutant interactions with marine microbiomes. During the campaign, samples of air, seawater, microbiomes, zooplankton and plastics are taken. In addition, a number of experiments are performed with the objective to assess the microbial degradation of pollutants, and the effects of organic pollutants and anthropogenic organic matter on marine microbiomes.

PYROWIND CRUISE, RV HESPÉRIDES

PYROWIND Cruise (29HE20220426) carried out on the Research Vessel Hespérides in 2022., The aim of the project is to develop an innovative palaeo-proxy approach to investigate the natural range of variability of the Hadley circulation during past episodes of extreme warmth and cold. The approach relies on the exploitation as climate proxy of an untapped but widespread material in marine sediments: windborne pyrogenic carbon (PyC) derived from savannah and grassland fires in the tropics. Through the geochemical and isotopic spatial characterization of PyC, along with the analysis of mineral dust in the modern tropical deep ocean, and a PyC biogeochemical model, we will build an interpretative framework of PyC deposition in deep-sea sediments. Its application in Pliocene-Pleistocene sequences from the Atlantic and the Pacific will allow the reconstruction of past meridional and zonal shifts in the Intertropical Convergence Zone and the Southern hemisphere westerlies, and provide new constraints on the natural variability of the Hadley circulation and associated hydroclimates.

Oceanographic data acquired during the CHALLENGE-2 Cruise (29HE20230103) on board the Research Vessel Hespérides in 2023., CHALLENGE-2 is the second and last campaign of the CHALLENGE project (Human pressures and natural hazards: challenges for the Antarctic marine benthos) which aims to experimentally analyze and describe the human pressures and natural hazards that challenge the Antarctic marine benthos, based on the background of the team's previous projects in this region. Changes in biodiversity will be assessed using different methodologies, with special emphasis on those poor-known habitats, across a latitudinal gradient from Rothera Island to South Orkney Islands, sampling in both in pristine and more polluted areas (tourist areas, with the presence of stations, etc.).

Oceanographic data acquired during the POLAR-CHANGE Cruise (29HE20230214) on board the Research Vessel Hespérides in 2023., The main objective of the POLAR CHANGE Antarctic expedition is to investigate the ocean-atmosphere interface and the cloud condensation nuclei generation under different scenarios. We investigate the role that marine microorganisms and sea-ice melting have in the primary and secondary marine aerosol generation. Online atmospheric measurements and in-situ lab experiments reproducing the ocean-atmosphere interface will provide data to understand nucleation events and the generation of clouds precursors.

SAGA-REC CRUISE, RV HESPÉRIDES

Oceanographic data acquired during the SAGA-REC Cruise (29HE20230408) on board the Research Vessel Hespérides in 2023., SAGA: The South Atlantic GAteway in the global conveyor belt. The general objective of the main SAGA project is to quantify and monitor the returning limb of the Atlantic Mmain meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) in the South Atlantic Ocean, with special attention to the interior-ocean zonal flows linking the eastern and western South Atlantic basins. To complete tasks of the main project, in 2021 were deployed a series of devices to measure different oceanographic variables at a depth between 2 and 4 kilometres deep in 7 seabed locations along the 10ºW meridian and between 34ºS and 19ºS. The main objective of the present SAGA REC cruise consists in the recovery of three previosly imstalled mooring with corresponded equipment and, in case of favourable meteorological conditions, to perform the CTD casts untill the bottom in the places where the mooring were installed and where the PIESs (Pressure Inverted Echo Sounder) are still remain to measure. Additionally is planned to performe the vertical hydrographyc transection in the shelf area of Uruguay.
