SCAN-1997 Cruise (29HE19970114) carried out on the Research Vessel Hespérides in 1997, Geodynamics and Paleoceanography of continental margins and basins: northern Antarctic Peninsula. (SCAN´ 97). Objectives of the SCAN 97 campaign: 1) Complete the study of the Powell Basin. 2) In the northwestern Wedell Sea, the mechanisms of continental fragmentation and backarc basin development models have been studied. The structure, seismic stratigraphy and evolution have been investigated, with the objective of studying the Cenozoic subduction along the Jane backarc and Jane arc. 3) The border between the Antarctic / Scotia plates has been studied in order to establish the current and Cenozoic dynamics between this larger plate limit in the South Atlantic

FILAMENT Cruise (29HE19970926) carried out on the Research Vessel Hespérides in 1997, Incident flux on the continental shelf between the Strait of Gibraltar and Cape Ghir. The main objectives of the campaign were to quantify the branch of the Canary Current that affects the slope and the continental shelf of northwest Africa between the latitudes of the Strait of Gibraltar and Cape Ghir, its recirculation in the margin near the slope in the form of a jet coastal barocino, and its new integration to the interior ocean in the filament area of Cabo Ghir. Other complementary objectives were to determine the concentrations of dissolved nutrients, respiration rates and productivity, and characterization of the water masses of the area in terms of dissolved aluminum

VIDAL CRUISE, RV HESPÉRIDES

  • Baraza, Jesús
  • CSIC - Unidad de Tecnología Marina (UTM)
VIDAL Cruise (29HE19971015) carried out on the Research Vessel Hespérides in 1997, Middle Ocean Channels and Fracture Zones: Interaction and Mutual Recent Evolution of Equatorial and Vidal Channels (Equatorial Atlantic). The main objective of the Campaign has been the study of the geological evolution of Vidal's Mediooceánicp channel, especially in its final section where it interacts with the Barracuda Fracture Zone, as well as in its proximal zone, with the definition of its main tributaries and its possible relationship in the distal turbiditic system of the Orinoco. Specific objectives. 1) Carry out detailed bathymetry in the de-opening zone of the Canal de Vidal, in the vicinity of the Barracuda Fracture Zone. 2) Carry out a high resolution and seismic profile, transversely to the fracture zone and abyssal llanira of Barracuda, in order to recognize its sedimentary fill and the relationship with the adjacent tectonic structures. 3) Carry out detailed bathymetry of the entire course of the Vidal Canal. 4) Carry out a series of high resolution seismic profiles transverse to the valley, to identify their most recent morphosedimentary characteristics. 5) Obtain a detailed bathymetry of the southern area of the Vidal Canal, to the affection of recognizing the presence of a series of important tributes from the area. 6) Carry out a series of seismic profiles in the area of said tributaries, in order to recognize their activity as sources of flows and contributions to the main valley. 7) Make a series of profiles of seismic and bathymetry in the area between the distal valleys of the Orinoco system, in order to certify the possible functional relationship and process level between both depositional systems and sedimentary transfer to the deeper basins of the Atlantic

ANTPAC CRUISE, RV HESPÉRIDES

  • Maldonado, Andrés
  • CSIC - Unidad de Tecnología Marina (UTM)
ANTPAC Cruise (29HE19971201) carried out on the Research Vessel Hespérides in 1997, Geodynamics and paleoceanography of the plate and margin limits of the Antarctic Peninsula in the Pacific (ANTPAC). The ANT 97/98 campaign of Geophysics and Marine Geology has focused on the analysis of the northern part of the Antarctic Peninsula, as well as the relationships between the main lithospheric elements that are located in the area on the Pacific margin and tDrake Passage. The thematic objectives include the tectonic and paleooceanographic study of selected segments of the active and passive margin, and the boundary between the tectonic plates existing in the area, including the analysis of a triple point. Experiments have been carried out to distinguish between factors linked to local tectonics and those of global character, climatic-eustatic changes, which have controlled the development of the various depositional provinces. To this end, profiles have been collected using multi-channel and single-channel reflection seismic techniques, sonobuoys, multibeam probes, high-resolution seismic, gravimetry and magnetometry

TASMANDRAKE CRUISE, RV HESPÉRIDES

  • Escutia, Carlota
  • Bohoyo, Fernando
  • CSIC - Unidad de Tecnología Marina (UTM)
TASMANDRAKE Cruise (29HE20180111) carried out on the Research Vessel Hespérides in 2018, The general objective of the TASMANDRAKE project is the study of the onset and evolution of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC). Taking into account the allowed period and that the capabilities of the geophysical equipment on board cannot image the deep structures and sediments, the cruise cannot fulfill the objectives of the TASMANDRAKE Project pertaining to the opening of gateways and onset of the ACC. We have therefore developed and alternative plan for the DRAKE2018 cruise that will allow us to collect mid-penetration to shallow data from the southern Drake-Scotia area (58ºS/62ºS and 60ºW/50ºW) and the South Orkney Shelf (60ºS/63ºS and 50ºW/40ºW). With this kind of capabilities we target those objectives of the TASMANDRAKE Project dealing with: 1) the evolution of the ACC during the Pleistocene and the Holocene; and 2) near-surface structure of continental blocks (i.e., the South Orkney micro-continent and the platform surrounding Elephant Island) and age of the older oceanic crust in Drake Passage. The proposed work is aimed to help land- ocean correlations between the stratigraphy of Seymour/Marambio Island and Ocean Drilling Project Site 696, in order to better understand the break-up and paleogeographic evolution of these continental blocks. The proposed marine surveys will consist in the execution of predefined transects along which geophysical data will be collected. In addition, we expect to collect sediment cores in specific sites, in order to groundtruth seismic facies with sediment information and provide age constrains of the most recent (Quaternary-Pliocene) units
