The objectives of the campaign are focused on 1) Characterization of the marine circulation and the functioning of the plantonic ecosystem in the eastern part of the Bransfield Strait and adjacent areas and 2) Study of the structure and diversity of bacterial and zooplanktonic communities in the main water masses that lie between the Drake Strait and the Antarctic Peninsula

BENTART-94 Cruise (29HE19940201) carried out on the Research Vessel Hespérides in 1994, Study of benthic fauna and flora of the bottoms in the south of Livingston Island area. PASO Cruise (29HE19940301) carried out on the Research Vessel Hespérides in 1994, Geophysical survey in the South Pacific: Volcanic Belt of Pascua (Hot-Line) and Society Islands (Hot-Spot). The first objective consists in the investigation of the genesis and evolution of the Easter Volcanic Belt, which is an alignment of submarine volcanoes located east of Easter Island and that connects in its easternmost sector with the Nazca Ridge. The knowledge of the cortical structure, as well as the main segmentation directions of the Nazca Plate will allow to quantify the relative movements of the Pascua and Juan Fernandez microplates and therefore define the plate kinematics of an important sector of the South Pacific with implications in seismicity on the western coast of South America. The second objective is the obtaining of significant geophysical parameters for the study of the generation of volcanic rocks and / or submarine volcanic chains, in a context of interplate volcanism referred to the mechanical response of the lithosphere in function of the speed and changes in the expansion oceanica (generation of new lithosphere)

CRESCENT-1 Cruise (29HE19940930) carried out on the Research Vessel Hespérides in 1994, Morphostructural control of sedimentary record and current sediment transfer in the Central-Eastern Atlantic: Agadir canyon and Hierro Island 1) Study in detail the morpho structure of the Agadir Canyon, with special incidence in the transition area between the mouth of the canyon and the channel and the channel of the turbiditic system, determining the morphology, geometry, stratigraphy and nature of the associated deposits. 2) Study the current sedimentary activity in the submarine canyons and the geological processes. The effect of current dynamic processes on the sedimentary record will be evaluated by analyzing the impact that similar processes could have had in the past. 3) Map the areas of sedimentary instability and establish the relative importance of the instability processes as modeling modifying agents in the morph-structure of the slope, base-slope and basin. 4) Establish relations between the processes of canalized transport, sedimentary instability and mass landslides, and the development of deposits of "debris flows" or turbidites in slopes and basins. ECOQUIM Cruise (29HE20060102) carried out on the Research Vessel Hespérides in 2006, Chemical Ecology of Antarctic invertebrates. The objective of this research is to obtain bioactive substances from Antarctic benthic invertebrates that provide information on the chemical ecology of the species involved, and that may be useful for their pharmacological potential. The material will be collected in the Bransfield Strait and later processed at the Gabriel de Castilla Antarctic Spanish Base on Deception Island.The ECOQUIM-2 cruise was carried out around Deception Island, Livingston Island and their vicinities (South Shetland Islands) on board the Spanish RV BIOHespe´rides. Two different sampling devices (Agassiz trawl and rocky dredge) were used to obtain the samples at depths from 25–215 m

BENTART-06 Cruise (29HE20060115) carried out on the Research Vessel Hespérides in 2006, The objective of this research is the study of benthic ecosystem in the southern Shetland Islands, Antarctic Peninsula and Bellinghausen Sea, very unknown areas. Samples of physical-chemical parameters of the water, biological and sediment column will be made, using dredges, biological fishing nets and an underwater robot to obtain photographs and record video. The analysis will allow us to see the effects of Agassiz-type trawl fishing techniques, as well as to establish a protocol for the minimization of the negative effects of these gear and the conservation of the benthic ecosystem

CONAFRICA Cruise (29HE20060322) carried out on the Research Vessel Hespérides in 2006, "The African connection in the waters of the Canary Current" CONAFRICA. The objective of this project is to study the drift of zooplankton and ichthyoplankton in the filaments that occur in the African upwelling . To do this, samples of the upwelling will be taken and it will be verified that the species of larvae of fish transported coincide with the presence of larvae of the same species in the Great Canary platform . The work area will be swept continuously to obtain acoustic density maps. The zooplankton and ichthyoplankton will be analyzed from the vessel, obtaining synoptic maps of the hydrological conditions, fluorescence, abundance and metabolic activity of the plankton and the distribution of pelagic fish

IMPULS Cruise (29HE20060516) carried out on the Research Vessel Hespérides in 2006, South Iberian Margin Paleoseismological integrated stUdy of large active Structures (IMPULS). The IMPULS project is based on a multidisciplinary and integrated onshore-off shore neotectonic and paleoseismological study of the Carboneras Fault Zone (CFZ) at the SE margin of the Iberian Peninsula. In order to obtain the resolution required to study the vertical geometry of active faults in South Iberi-an Margin (e.g the Carboneras Fault) we tested a new high-resolution multi-channel seismic system onboard the RV Hespérides
