The aim of this research was to explore whether perceived support from classmates moderates the relationship between core self-evaluations (CSE) and psychological well-being indicators among adolescents. The Core Self-Evaluations Scale, the Teacher and Classmate Support Scale, the Satisfaction with Life Scale, the Frequency of Suicidal Ideation Inventory, and the Depression, Anxiety, and Stress scales were administered to 2,883 Spanish adolescents (Mage = 14.07). Perceived classmate support moderated the relationship between CSE and life satisfaction, depressive symptoms, and suicidal ideation. These findings provide empirical support for theoretical and conceptual work connecting perceived classmate support, CSE, and psychological well-being among adolescents, suggesting that alone, but also in combination, these personal and social resources may be particularly relevant in helping to promote psychological well-being. Theoretical and practical implications of the joint study of these constructs and their relationship with psychological well-being in adolescents are discussed., Universidad de Málaga Grupo PAIDI Applied Positive Lab CTS-1048 (Junta de Andalucía) Proyecto I+D+i del Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación de España (PID2020-117006RB-I00)

Background: Problematic smartphone use (PSU) is a public health issue that is currently rising among adoles- cents. The Compensatory Internet Use Theory (CIUT) poses that difficulties in handling negative life circum- stances could result in PSU. Furthermore, the Interaction of Person-Affect-Cognition-Execution (I-PACE) model suggests that the interaction between core characteristics and affective and cognitive responses could lead to PSU. The present study aimed to clarify the links between psychological distress and PSU by exploring rumi- nation as a mediator and emotional intelligence (EI) as a moderator. Methods: A sample of 1882 adolescents (54% female, 46% male) completed measures of psychological distress, rumination, EI and PSU. The PROCESS macro was used to conduct a moderated mediation analysis. Results: The mediation results showed a significant indirect effect from psychological distress to PSU through rumination. Furthermore, EI was a significant moderator of this effect. Thus, in adolescents with higher EI, the effect of psychological distress on PSU through rumination was not significant. Limitations: Cross-sectional data do not imply causality and further studies should use longitudinal designs. Self- report questionnaires may be susceptible to social desirability bias and future studies including other sources of information may help to minimize such bias. Conclusions: This study contributes to the field of problematic digital technology usage, showing that the link between psychological distress and PSU depends on the EI levels, which might influence PSU indirectly through rumination. Furthermore, empirical evidence for the CIUT and I-PACE models was provided. Lastly, in- terventions aiming at training EI may aid in the prevention of PSU., Universidad de Málaga (PPIT.UMA.A2.2019) Grupo PAIDI Applied Positive Lab CTS-1048 (Junta de Andalucía) Proyecto I+D+i del Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación de España (PID2020-117006RB-I00) Fondos FEDER/Junta de Andalucía (UMA 18-FEDERJA-147)

The excessive usage of social networking sites might affect adolescents’ well-being. Recent studies have found significant associations between problematic social media use (PSMU) and psychological maladjustment. The present study aimed at analyzing gender differences in the percentages of high-risk PSMU and to investigate the relations with the emotional intelligence (EI) of adolescents. The sample was composed of 597 adolescents (58.8 % girls, 45.2 % boys) within the ages of 12 and 19. Participants completed self-report questionnaires of EI (WLEIS) and PSMU (BSMAS). Results indicate that girls had higher high-risk percentages of PSMU (17.7 %) than boys (13.4 %). Furthermore, boys had higher levels of self-emotion appraisal, regulation of emotions and global EI, while girls had higher levels of other-emotion appraisal. Nonetheless, when correlational analyses were divided by gender, only in girls there was a significant and negative association between PSMU and self-emotion appraisal, use of emotions, regulation of emotions and global EI. Results indicate that the higher risk of PSMU found in girls could be related to their lower levels of self-emotion appraisal, regulation of emotions and global EI. The findings highlight the importance of designing gender sensitive PSMU prevention strategies., Universidad de Málaga (PPIT.UMA.A2.2019) Grupo PAIDI Applied Positive Lab CTS-1048 (Junta de Andalucía) Proyecto I+D+i del Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación de España (PID2020-117006RB-I00) Fondos FEDER/Junta de Andalucía (UMA 18-FEDERJA-147)

Because problematic smartphone use (PSU) is rising among adolescents, it is vital to analyze the potential causes and psychosocial consequences affecting this target population. Current theoretical frameworks suggest that specific personal core characteristics might predispose individuals to experience increases in this problematic behavior over time. Additionally, PSU has been conceptualized as a maladaptive coping mechanism to manage negative emotions. The present study aimed at analyzing a personal resource, critical thinking disposition, and a potential negative consequence, reduced academic engagement, and the underlying role of perceived stress and PSU in this association among Spanish adolescents. The sample consisted of 688 adolescents (54% females, 46% males) aged 12 to 18 years from Southern Spain. Participants completed self-report questionnaires to assess critical thinking disposition (VIA-Youth), perceived stress (Perceived Stress Scale), PSU (Smartphone Addiction Scale- Short Version), and academic engagement (Utrecht Work Engagement Scale-Students). We analyzed a serial mediation model using PROCESS (SPSS), in which critical thinking disposition was the independent variable, perceived stress and PSU were the first and second mediators, respectively, and academic engagement was the outcome variable. Our results indicated that lower critical thinking disposition was linked to increased perceived stress, which was associated with higher PSU, resulting in decreased academic engagement. These findings provide empirical support for the pathways model of PSU, the maladaptive coping theories, and the I-PACE model of behavioral addictions. Furthermore, we discuss our results highlighting the important implication of training adolescents to think critically regarding their smartphone usage to reduce their stress levels, to avoid using smartphones as a coping strategy, and hence, to improve their student's attitudes toward school., Universidad de Málaga (PPIT.UMA.A2.2019) Grupo PAIDI Applied Positive Lab CTS-1048 (Junta de Andalucía) Proyecto I+D+i del Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación de España (PID2020-117006RB-I00) Fondos FEDER/Junta de Andalucía (UMA 18-FEDERJA-147)

Problematic smartphone use (PSU) has been widely studied, and recent research has examined the affective and cognitive process risk factors that underlie its development and maintenance. Based on the Interaction of Person–Affect–Cognition–Execution model for problematic internet use, the present study analyzed the mediating role of cognitive emotion regulation strategies in the link between depressive symptomatology and PSU severity in adolescents. The sample consisted of 2,197 adolescents aged 12 to 19 years from southern Spain, who completed self-report questionnaires of depressive symptoms (Depression Anxiety Stress Scale–21), cognitive emotion regulation strategies (Cognitive Emotion Regulation Strategies Questionnaire), and PSU severity (Smartphone Addiction Scale–Short Version). We used the SPSS PROCESS macro to conduct parallel mediation analyses. The results demonstrated significant indirect/mediation effects from depressive symptoms to PSU severity through cognitive emotion regulation strategies, including other-blame, catastrophizing, rumination (i.e., maladaptive), and refocus on planning (i.e., adaptive). The implications of this study include that specific teaching about these strategies may help reduce PSU severity in adolescents., Universidad de Málaga (PPIT.UMA.A2.2019, PPIT.UMA.D2.2022) Grupo PAIDI Applied Positive Lab CTS-1048 (Junta de Andalucía) Proyecto I+D+i del Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación de España (PID2020-117006RB-I00) Fondos FEDER/Junta de Andalucía (UMA 18-FEDERJA-147)
