ABUNDANCE OF MESOPELAGIC FISH LARVAE IN THE AGULHAS CURRENT REGION DURING THE "AGULHAS" ICHTHYOPLANKTON SURVEYS OF MAY AND OCTOBER (1990) AND FEBRUARY (1991) [DATASET]
- Olivar, M. Pilar
- Beckley, Lynnath E.
- Galiana, Savitri
This dataset provides information on the distribution and abundance of mesopelagic fish larvae in the Agulhas Current region (southwestern Indian) in three cruises carried out between 1990 and 1991. Samples were dominated by larvae of myctophid fishes. A few species showed marked seasonality in their occurrence, e.g. Scopelopsis multipunctatus that only appeared in winter, and Hygophum hygomii that showed the highest abundances in winter, while others appeared in low concentrations during all surveys. Shoreward intrusions of Agulhas Current surface water contributed to the occurrence of larvae of oceanic species in inshore stations, "Agulhas current ichthyoplankton". ABUNDANCE OF FISH EGGS AND LARVAE IN THE NORTHERN AND CENTRAL BENGUELA UPWELLING REGION DURING THE "BENGUELA" SURVEYS (1979-1984) [DATASET]
- Olivar, M. Pilar
- Rubiés, Pere
- Galiana, Savitri
This dataset provides information on distribution, abundance and diversity of ichthyoplankton in the Benguela Current region (southeastern Atlantic). Data came from six cruises carried out in the northen and central Benguela region between 1979 and 1984. Larval diversity was higher in the northern part of the study area due to the intrusions of Angolan waters. The frontal zone between Angola and Benguela waters was a nursery ground for the pelagic species of the region: Trachurus trachurus capensis, Engraulis capensis, and Sardinops ocellatus (currently accepted as Sardinops sagax). The eggs and larval distributions showed that their spatial patterns were related to the upwelling situation, with important transport of larvae of pelagic shelf species to offshore waters due to the surface Ekman transport associated with coastal upwelling, "Investigaciones en las costas de Namibia" (BENGUELA). ICHTHYOPLANKTON DIVERSITY AND HORIZONTAL DISTRIBUTION DURING THE "CANOA" SURVEY (NOVEMBER 2008) IN THE CENTRAL NORTH ATLANTIC [DATASET]
- Olivar, M. Pilar
- Sabatés, Ana
- Galiana, Savitri
This dataset gives information on fish eggs and larval diversity and abundances, integrated through the water column, in the Central North Atlantic in November 2008. This investigation showed the associations between larval fish assemblages and oceanographic conditions in the upper ocean (top 200 m). The larvae of different myctophid species serve as indicators of the water masses. The alongslope offshore convergence of North Atlantic Central Water and South Atlantic Central Water takes place at the Cape Verde Frontal Zone, representing a region of extensive offshore export for larvae of coastal species, mainly Sardina pilchardus and Engraulis encrasicolus, "Memoria oceánica del clima: mecanismos y rutas de formación de aguas superficiales en el Atlántico Ecuatorial" (CANOA). ABUNDANCE OF FISH EGGS AND LARVAE IN THE NORTHEN AND CENTRAL BENGUELA UPWELLING REGION DURING THE "SNEC" SURVEYS (SEPTEMBER 1995 AND APRIL 1996) [DATASET]
- Olivar, M. Pilar
- Rubiés, Pere
- Galiana, Savitri
This dataset provides information on the diversity, distribution and abundance of ichthyoplankton in the northen and Central Benguela Current region (southeastern Atlantic) during intense upwelling (September 1995) and quiescent upwelling (April 1996) months. The number of eggs and larvae correspond to abundances integrated through the first 200 m of the water column. During intense upwelling season there was a clear segregation of coast and oceanic taxa. Two species, the lanternfish Lampanyctodes hectoris and the lightfish Maurolicus muelleri, dominated the oceanic area, while in the coastal area, the most abundant species was Sufflogobius bibarbatus. During the quiescent season and in the northern Benguela zone, eggs and larval samples were dominated by horse mackerel (Trachurus trachurus), anchovy (Engraulis capensis) and pilchard (Sardinops ocellatus, now accepted as S. sagax), "Estudio de las condiciones ambientales determinantes del rendimiento de los recursos pesqueros existentes en las costas de Namibia y sus fluctuaciones" (SNEC). ABUNDANCE OF FISH EGGS AND LARVAE DURING THE "VALDIVIA" SURVEY (MAY 1982) IN THE VALDIVIA BANK AND CENTRAL BENGUELA UPWELLING REGION [DATASET]
- Olivar, M. Pilar
- Rubiés, Pere
- Galiana, Savitri
This dataset provides information on the distribution and abundance of fish larvae in offshore waters of the Central Benguela Current region (Southeast Atlantic) during May 1982. The sampling extended from the slope region and along two transects between the Benguela upwelling system and the Valdivia Bank (located 400 miles offshore of the Namib coast). Samples were dominated by larvae of mesopelagic fish, particularly the myctophid Lampanyctodes hectoris, whose presence in offshore zones could be related to transport caused by an upwelling filament, "Investigaciones en las costas de Namibia, Campaña Valdivia" (VALDIVIA). Specimens were studied using morphological characters and molecular phylogenetic analyses of the ITS, LSU, RPB1, and RPB2 regions. The results of the concatenated phylogenetic trees based on two and four markers support the monophyly of Hyphodermella and the original description of the genus. Morphological and molecular evidence delimit six clades and one singleton within the Hyphodermella core; three of these correspond to species already described, Hyphodermella corrugata, H. maunakeaensis, and H. rosae, and three correspond to new species, Hyphodermella paulusiae sp. nov., H. ryvardenii sp. nov., and H. salcedoae sp. nov., which are described in this paper., Financial support was provided by DGI projects CGL2005–01192, CGL2012–35559, and CGL2015–67459-P, and by the CSIC/Fundación Endesa/Fundación San Ignacio de Huinay project (2011HUIN10; 2013CL0012; 2014CL0011) and Ref. 202030E059., Peer reviewed, Modelo experimental alternativo-NAM
