PALEOPAC CRUISE, RV HESPÉRIDES

PALEOPAC Cruise (29HE19960309) carried out on the Research Vessel Hespérides in 1996, The PALEOPAC campaign was developed in the South Pacific in March 1996. During the campaign, kasten cores, gravity corers, maxicores, bathymetric profile with EK 500 and EM 12 probe and very high resolution profiles with BPS parametric probe were taken. The concrete areas of the study have been the southern Chilean margin around the Gulf of Penas, the "sea mounts" located in the basins off the Chilean continental margin and the Nazca Ridge. The intensive zone of work and sampling has been the Nazca Ridge. The purpose of the campaign has been to take cores in areas of the Pacific that allowed to study the paleoceanographic variability from the record of indicators of paleotemperatures and paleoproductivities accumulated in the sediment. The analysis of parameters such as the biogenic opaline, the content of organic matter and certain radioisotopes make it possible to reconstruct the records of paleoproductivity, paleotemperature and ocean circulation during periods of hundreds of kiloyears.

TASYO Cruise (29HE20000425) carried out on the Research Vessel Hespérides in 2000, Tecto-sedimentary transport from the continental margin of the Gulf of Cadiz to the Atlantic abyssal plains . The present project focuses on the geodynamic, stratigraphic and morpho-sedimentary study of the continental margin of the Gulf of Cadiz and its relationship with adjacent abyssal areas. It is intended to determine the tecto-sedimentary transport between the platform-slope of the Gulf of Cadiz and the abyssal plains of Herradura and Sena. The area is of special importance because it is very conditioned by one of the most gigantic phenomena of submarine sedimentary transport that can be known both in the Atlantic and in other oceanic areas of the world. This is due to a substrate in the sedimentary basin characterized by an olistostromica mass that conditions a high tectonic and sedimentary instability from the Mieocene to the present day

MVSEIS Cruise (29HE20080516) carried out on the Research Vessel Hespérides in 2008, MVSEIS: Tectonic control, deep structure and the mud volcanoes of the Gulf of Cádiz characteristics. The main scientific objectives of the MVSEIS campaign can be summarized as follows: 1) Study the morphology and the internal geophysical configuration (seismic, magnetic and gravimetric) of the mud volcanoes and carbonate diapiric dorsal continental margins of the Gulf of Cádiz. 2) Identify, sample and photograph possible active structures of emissions of Fluids in the bottoms of diapiric ridges and mud volcanoes. 3) Sample gas hydrates associated with mud volcanoes and study the geothermal and oceanographic conditions for its formation. 4) Identify and sample biomineralizations (nodules, crusts, chimneys, etc.) by the action of micro / macro chemosynthetic organisms by anaerobic oxidation of methane and / or dissociation of hydrated gases (clathrates). 5) Recognize the role of global (paleo) oceanographic / climatic changes and tectonics in the formation and evolution of mud volcanoes, diapiric ridges carbonated, deep chemosynthetic reefs and associated biomineralisations
