Orofacial cleft is considered one of the commonest birth defects worldwide with a frequency of 1 per 500 live births. The Presurgical Nasoalveolar Molding (NAM) aims primarily to diminish the severity of the initial cleft condition. The primary objective of this study is to assess the perception, attitude, and opinions of parents and guardians of cleft palate patients, as well as their experience with pre-surgical orthopedics (NAM). 43 parents of children diagnosed of cleft lip/palate undergoing NAM treatment completed a questionnaire, and the responses are analyzed in this report. Most of respondents (79.1%) were mothers. Their ages fell predominantly within the range of 35-45 years (62.8%) or slightly younger (30.2% in the 25-35 age range). Only 23.3% were aware of the NAM treatment. The mother (39.5%) or both adults (55.8%) were responsible for managing the NAM. The baby's adaptation to NAM was favorable (average 3.4 ± 1.5; median 4.0)

The Excel file contains part of the data collected in the environment of the Thesis "THE EFFECTIVENESS OF PERCEPTUAL LEARNING AS A TREATMENT FOR AMBLIOPIA IN CHILDHOOD AS COMPARED TO OTHER CONVENTIONAL TREATMENTS" whose author is Rosa Mª Hernández Andrés. These data support the results of this thesis as well as different subsequent publications. The data belong to a pediatric population from 4 to 12 years old that includes population without amblyopia and population with amblyopia. The sample has been divided into 4 groups: control group without amblyopia, group with patch treatment only (2 h), group with monocular perceptual learning treatment and group with patch treatment (2 hours) together with orthoptic vision therapy exercises. The data contained in the table are: Visual Acuity and Stereopsis. These data are presented both for baseline (Pre) and at the end of treatment, after 3 months (Post). In addition all data are classified in terms of group, age, sex and type of amblyopia., 3 - Salut i Benestar

BIOCHEMICAL CHARACTERIZATION OF THREE HETEROLOGOUS LACTIC ACID BACTERIA LACCASES FROM PEDIOCOCCUS, LACTOBACILLUS AND LACTO-COCCUS GENUS AND THEIR POTENTIAL TO DEGRADE BIOGENIC AMINES USING ABTS AND EPICATECHIN AS MEDIATORS

In this study, we cloned and characterized three bacterial laccases from strains of the species Pediococcus parvulus, Lacticaseibacillus paracasei and Lactococcus lactis isolated from wine and cheese, and evaluated their biogenic amine degradation abilities in the presence/absence of artificial 2,2’-azinobis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid (ABTS) or natural (epicatechin) mediator compounds. Although some recombinant bacterial laccases have been characterized and re-vealed as biological tools to degrade biogenic amines using or not mediators, no previous research had been undertaken on the role of natural mediators, such as phenolic substrates found in wine and some vegetable food, in the degradation of biogenic amines. The three recombinant bacterial laccases exhibited sigmoidal kinetics, similar molecular mass, and different k0.5 and specific activi-ties on ABTS. They are acidophilic with optima temperature of 28ºC, and have low thermal stabil-ity at temperatures higher than 37ºC. The three laccases were able to degrade dopamine in ab-sence of any mediator, whereas the rest of amines were not degraded. The presence of ABTS somehow improved dopamine and tyramine degradation, while the addition of epicatechin did not improve their degradation. This is the first study in which the biogenic amine-degrading effi-ciency of an artificial mediator used by laccases is compared with a natural mediator.

THE EFFECT OF AN ABDOMINOPELVIC EXERCISE PROGRAM ALONE VS IN ADDITION TO POSTURAL INSTRUCTIONS ON PELVIC FLOOR MUSCLE FUNCTION IN CLIMACTERIC WOMEN WITH STRESS URINARY INCONTINENCE. A RANDOMIZED CONTROLLED TRIAL

We hypothesized that verbal postural instructions during abdominopelvic exercises would enhance PFMs activation and strength resulting in improved symptoms of SUI in women. PFMs electromyographical (EMG) activity and strength were quantified during a maximal voluntary contraction before and after two interventions in women with SUI. SUI symptoms were assessed using a 3-day bladder diary.

SUPPLEMENTARY MATERIALS FOR ARCHAEOLOGICAL ASSESSMENT REVEALS EARTH’S EARLY TRANSFORMATION THROUGH LAND USE ARCHAEOLOGICAL ASSESSMENT REVEALS EARTH'S EARLY TRANSFORMATION THROUGH LAND USE

  • Stephens, Lucas
  • Diez Castillo, Agustín
  • Ellis, Erle
Environmentally transformative human use of land accelerated with the emergence of agriculture, but the extent, trajectory, and implications of these early changes are not well understood. An empirical global assessment of land use from 10,000 years before the present (yr B.P.) to 1850 CE reveals a planet largely transformed by huntergatherers, farmers, and pastoralists by 3000 years ago, considerably earlier than the dates in the land-use reconstructions commonly used by Earth scientists. Synthesis of knowledge contributed by more than 250 archaeologists highlighted gaps in archaeological expertise and data quality, which peaked for 2000 yr B.P. and in traditionally studied and wealthier regions. Archaeological reconstruction of global landuse history illuminates the deep roots of Earth's transformation and challenges the emerging Anthropocene paradigm that large-scale anthropogenic global environmental change is mostly a recent phenomenon.
