ISLAS DE RECURSOS

RESOURCE ISLANDS

My art practice in the past few years has focused on the research and understanding of the land as a generator of natural and cultural ecosystems that engage us with place. Getting to know the place is a fundamental premise when I decide to make an artwork in the landscape. I understand the creative process in the landscape as a collaboration with the biotic community that is part of that landscape. The tree, the land, the water, the animals and, by extension, the peasant and the shepherd are elements that transform the work. The territory and its vegetation, the land and the water, or the lack of it, have always activated the sense of my work. They are the starting point to talk about the landscape. This connection with the landscape has inspired the site-specific interventions which I have developed in various natural environments: ‘Horcomolle Biological Reserve’ Tucumán (Argentina); ‘I poeti fanno la cittá’ Bologna (Italia), ‘Oltre il Giardino’ San Mauro Pascoli (Italia), ‘Lomos de Oro’ Villoslada de Cameros, La Rioja, ‘Arte en la Tierra’ Santa Lucía de Ocón, La Rioja; “El Bosque Hueco” Puebla de La Sierra, Madrid, “Naturalmente Artificial” Museo Arte Contemporáneo Esteban Vicente, Segovia; “Un camino entre el Arte y el Medio Rural” Valdemanco, Mancomunidad Servicios Culturales, Madrid; V Muestra de Teatro de Calle de la Sierra Norte; “Artifariti” III Encuentros Internacionales de Arte en Territorios Liberados del Sahara Occidental; “Camino de las Raíces”, La Alberca, Salamanca; Festival Piorno en flor, Gredos; “Cartografia de sal” Cacis, Centro de Arte y sostenibilidad, Cataluña; “Deslinde” Valdearte, Huelva… For the project Senda, en Joya, arte y ecología, I propose an intervention that reflects on one of the more representative ecosystems of the semiarid zones of the Iberian Peninsula and North Africa: the ‘espartal’ (esparto field). Under the plants of esparto there is a soil with better bioclimatic conditions and more fertility than the soils nearby. That is why it is considered that esparto creates ‘resource islands’ that encourage the growth of vegetation that helps to fix the soil and keep the moisture. My project, “Islas de recursos”, aims to give an arts perspective to the research process about the importance of the use of esparto fiber to control the erosion and the re-vegetation in semiarid zones. The design of several ‘bio-rolls’ made of esparto which will be installed in a ‘cárcava’ aims to create a space protected from the direct impact of the drops of rain and sun exposure. This will keep a stable temperature in the ground and will avoid the evaporation of water. The plant texture of the mesh will increase the roughness of the ground, which will decrease water run-off. This structure will also facilitate the retention of soil particles and seeds that will allow plants to grow between the interstices of the mess, helping fix and regenerate the ground with new vegetation. Each piece has a word embroidered that references both the effect of the organic rolls on the land and a possible more balanced poetic interaction of the human being with the landscape that surrounds us: to shelter, to secure, to recover, to filter, to purify, to soften, to nurture.

HUMAN TOUCHES IN NATURE

TOQUES HUMANOS EN LA NATURALEZA

  • Özceber, Tunç
When it comes to nature, fall has a special place in my photography since it both shows the death of nature and its resurrection. The warm colors of autumn landscapes reflect the beauty of nature, emphasizing that it actually is our real home. In my photographs I always add a positive touch of the human presence to natural settings. In the first photograph it can bee seen how beautiful it looks when humans try to work together with nature; and in the second one the things humans leave behind sooner or later turn into nature itself., En lo que respecta a la naturaleza, el otoño ocupa un lugar especial en mi fotografía porque muestra tanto la muerte de la naturaleza como su resurrección.
