PESTICIDE EXPOSURE TRIGGERS SEX-SPECIFIC INTER- AND TRANS-GENERATIONAL EFFECTS CONDITIONED BY PAST SEXUAL SELECTION

Environmental variation often induces plastic responses in organisms that can trigger changes in subsequent generations through non-genetic inheritance mechanisms. Such transgenerational plasticity thus consists of environmentally-induced non-random phenotypic modifications that are transmitted through generations. Transgenerational effects may vary according to the sex of the organism experiencing the environmental perturbation, the sex of their descendants, or both, but whether they are affected by past sexual selection is unknown. Here we use experimental evolution on an insect model system to conduct a first test of the involvement of sexual selection history in shaping transgenerational plasticity in the face of rapid environmental change (exposure to pesticides). We manipulated evolutionary history in terms of the intensity of sexual selection for over 80 generations before exposing individuals to the toxicant. We found that sexual selection history constrained adaptation under rapid environmental change. We also detected intergenerational and transgenerational effects of pesticide exposure in the form of increased fitness and longevity. These cross-generational influences of toxicants were sex-dependent (they affected only male descendants), and intergenerational, but not transgenerational, plasticity was modulated by sexual selection history. Our results highlight the complexity of intragenerational, intergenerational, and transgenerational influences of past selection and environmental stress on phenotypic expression., Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación : PID2019-105547GB-I00; Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación : FPU17/02623; Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación : CGL2016-76173-P, Peer reviewed

[Aim] We investigated the relationship between thermal physiology, elevational distribution, and thermal stress among nine closely related dendrobatid frogs during their aquatic stage by employing an integrated approach, combining thermal physiology, environmental temperature modelling, and predictive assessments of current and future exposure to thermal variation., [Location] Ecuador, [Taxon] Amphibians; Anura, Dendrobatidae, Epipedobates, Hyloxalus, [Methods] We determined the Thermal Performance Curves of larval growth (TPCs) for each species and modelled the thermal variation in contrasting aquatic larval environments for both present and future times. This allowed us to estimate the expected elevational distributions and forecast periods of exposure to stressful temperatures that inhibit larval growth due to elevation and global warming., [Results] We found significant correlations between optimum temperature (Topt), 50 % maximum performance temperature (maxB50), 50% minimum performance temperature (minB50), and cold resistance (survival at 9 ºC) with the current elevational distributions. However, thermal physiology predicted lower than observed distributions for high-elevation dendrobatids and higher than observed maximum elevations for lowland species. Nonetheless, our models predicted that low thermal variability habitats (i.e. streams and deep permanent ponds) can buffer the future increase in temperatures for all taxa, even when considering the most extreme scenario. In contrast, all species within high thermal variation habitats (open forest temporary ponds) are expected to experience stressful temperatures under present conditions., [Main Conclusions] The findings indicate that thermal physiology may not be a limiting factor for dendrobatid frog species' ranges in this equatorial mountain gradient. Highland species may need to adapt to suboptimal performance, while some lowland species could occupy higher elevations. This study emphasizes the importance of habitat buffering to mitigate thermal stress in the face of climate change for amphibians in tropical mountains., Ministry of Economy, Industry and Competitiveness : CGL2012-40246-C02-01; Ministry of Economy, Industry and Competitiveness : SEV-69; Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation : BOE-A-2015-12270; Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions : MSCAH2020:897901; Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation : AP/038788/11; Pontificia Universidad Católica del Ecuador : L13227, General Academic Board, Peer reviewed

LIFETIME FECUNDITY AND SIZE IN THE MEDITERRANEAN SHRUB LAVANDULA LATIFOLIA (LAMIACEAE)
- Herrera, Carlos M.
A study was undertaken between 1986-2023 were plant size and inflorescence production were monitored for the whole reproductive lifespans of N = 128 individuals of the Mediterranean woody shrub Lavandula latifolia (Lamiaceae) to address the following questions: Did individuals vary in lifetime trajectories of size and fecundity?, and Were parameters describing individual trajectories significant predictors of cumulative lifetime reproduction? The study site was in a mixed woodland of Pinus nigra and Quercus rotundifolia in the Sierra de Cazorla, Jaén province, southeastern Spain (site coordinates 37.9612ºN, 2.8847ºW). All plants were checked every summer (August-September) between 1987-2023. On each occasion, individuals found dead were digged up, collected, and their age at the time of death determined by ring counting. For each individual that remained alive, the number of inflorescences produced in the current year was counted and, on the even years, their size was assessed by measuring the two major axes of the canopy and then computing the area of the horizontal projection by assimilating the shape to an ellipse. The birth year of every monitored individual was determined by substracting the age at death from the year of death, and this information was then used to retrospectively compute the age of every plant in each study year. These data were then merged with those on yearly plant fecundity (number of inflorescences) and plant size measurements (estimated canopy area) to obtain individual lifetime profiles of size and fecundity in relation to current age., PID2022-141530NB-C22, DISTEPIC; PROMETEO-2021/040, FocScales, Peer reviewed

CUMULATIVE INFILTRATION CURVES MEASURED IN TWO-LAYER COLUMNS CONSISTED OF A HYDROPHOBIC SUBSTRATE ON WETTABLE SOIL [DATASET]
CURVAS DE INFILTRACIÓN ACUMULATIVA MEDIDAS EN COLUMNAS DE DOS CAPAS FORMADAS POR UN SUSTRATO HIDRÓFOBO SOBRE SUELO HUMECTABLE [DATASET]
- Moret-Fernández, David
[ENG] The dataset is structured in a single Excel file comprising three sheets, each containing raw measurements of cumulative infiltration curves followed by gravity drainage. In every sheet, the first row labels the different infiltration curves, with time values (in seconds) recorded in Column A and corresponding cumulative infiltration data (in millimeters) in subsequent columns. Each infiltration curve represents a distinct material, differentiated by color-coded headers for clarity. The time column remains consistent across all curves, while the infiltration data columns (B, C, etc.) capture the different cumulative infiltration followed by drainage.
The first sheet, labeled Hydrophobic Substrate, includes the infiltration curves measured in 1 cm and 2.5 cm thick columns filled with hydrophobic litter of Rosmarie (RS) and Pine. Each combination of substrate type (RS or Pine) and column thickness was tested in triplicate (three replications). The headers are color-coded to distinguish between different column geometries and substrate types.
The second sheet, titled Hydrophobic Layer on Wettable Soil, contains cumulative infiltration curves measured in laboratory soil columns. Each column consisted of a 2 cm thick layer of hydrophobic Rosmarie (RS) or Pine litter placed atop a 5 cm thick layer of either sand or loam soil. Three replicates were performed for each hydrophobic-wettable layer combination. The headers of each infiltration curve are color-coded to distinguish between different column geometries and substrate types.
The third sheet, Undisturbed cores, shows the cumulative infiltration curves measured in from undisturbed soil cores collected in forest soils.
