5 Files., Zinc finger protein BRUTUS-like At1g18910 (BTSL2-N) Mol. type Protein Organism Arabidopsis thaliana Olig. state Monomer Mon. MW 97.8 kDa UniProt F4IDY5 (1-831) Sequence FASTA, Synchrotron SAXS data from solutions of BRUTUS-LIKE2 N-Terminal Region (BTSL2-N) in 10 mM MES, 15 mM NaCl, pH 6.5 were collected on the B21 beam line at the Diamond Light Source (Didcot, UK) using a Eiger 4M detector at a sample-detector distance of 3.7 m and at a wavelength of λ = 0.09464 nm (I(s) vs s, where s = 4πsinθ/λ, and 2θ is the scattering angle). In-line size-exclusion chromatography (SEC) SAS was employed. The SEC parameters were as follows: A 60.00 μl sample at 5 mg/ml was injected at a 0.07 ml/min flow rate onto a GE Superdex 200 Increase 3.2/300 column at 15°C. 600 successive 3 second frames were collected. The data were normalized to the intensity of the transmitted beam and radially averaged; the scattering of the solvent-blank was subtracted., Peer reviewed

SRΜCT DATASET FOR THE PAPER "EXTENDING THE FOSSIL RECORD OF LATE OLIGOCENE NON-BITING MIDGES (CHIRONOMIDAE, DIPTERA) OF NEW ZEALAND"

  • Baranov, Viktor
  • Hammel, Jörg U.
Two Chironomid specimens preserved in close proximity in nearly opaque amber could not be prepared separately and studied by light microscopy. These specimens (No. OU47580, No. OU47581) were scanned on the Imaging Beamline P05 (Lytaev et al., 2014) operated by the Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon at the PETRA III storage ring (Deutsches Elektronen Synchrotron - DESY, Hamburg, Germany), using a photon energy of 18 keV and a sample-to-detector distance of 100 mm. Projections were recorded with a custom 20 MP CMOS imaging system with an effective pixel size of 1.28 µm (Lytaev et al., 2014). For each tomographic scan, 3601 projections were recorded at equal intervals between 0 and π. Reconstruction was carried out by applying a transport of intensity phase retrieval approach and using the filtered back projection algorithm (FBP). This workflow was carried out in a custom reconstruction pipeline using Matlab (Math-Works) and the Astra Toolbox (Moosmann et al., 2014; van Aarle et al., 2015, 2016). Raw projections were binned twice for further processing, resulting in an effective pixel size of the reconstructed volume (voxel) of 2.56 µm. Scanned volumes were reconstructed using Drishti ver. 2.6.6 (Limaye, 2012). To decrease the demands for computer memory, we converted all stacks into 8-bit tiffs, downscaled all tiffs by 50% and subsequently cropped the empty space around the amber piece using Fiji ‘scale’ and ‘crop’ functions (Schindelin et al., 2012). Volumes were rendered in Drishti ver. 2.6.6 (Limaye, 2012)., Peer reviewed

THERMAL ECOLOGY OF SUMMER-BLOOMING MEDITERRANEAN THISTLES

  • Herrera, Carlos M.
A study was undertaken between 2020-2024 on the thermal ecology of flower heads (capitula) of 15 species of summer-blooming species of Asteraceae, tribe Cardueae, from hot-dry habitats in the southern Iberian Peninsula. Temperature inside (Tin) and outside (Tout) capitula were assessed under natural field conditions by two complementary sampling and measurement procedures, which provided information on the relationships between the two temperatures at the levels of individual capitula ("continuous recording") and local plant populations ("instantaneous measurements"). Baselines for the Tin–Tout relationship in absence of physiological activity were obtained by exposing fast-dehydrated capitula to a broad range of ambient temperatures. To assess whether capitula of summer-flowering Asteraceae defined a distinct thermal layer in the summer environment, the distribution of capitula in relation to the ground was quantified. Bees visiting capitula were watched and temperature of the air beside the visited capitulum (Tout) was measured., Peer reviewed

ENHANCED MAGNETOELASTIC STRESS IN DISORDERED IRON-GALLIUM ALLOY THIN FILMS REVEALED BY DIRECT MEASUREMENT

The large magnetostriction in FeGa alloys is relevant for manifold applications, but for thin films, it can play a prominent role in controlling the strength of the magnetic anisotropy. Bulk samples show values depending on the extensive preparation procedure compendium, which is limited in its temperature range for high-quality thin-film synthesis. Here, we present a study of the magnetoelastic coupling coefficients B1 and B2 in epitaxial FeGa thin films below 50 nm deposited on the MgO(001) surface at 150 ºC by the cantilever method. Series of films with 22, 28, and 33 at. % Ga do not show thickness-dependent variations for B1 and B2, but -B1 for the 22 at. % Ga composition is 10 MPa, roughly 2 times the bulk value and smaller than the bulk-like value of -B1=12.1 MPa obtained for a film with 17 at. % Ga. This enhancement is correlated with the A2 crystal structure for the film rather than the coexistence with D03 or other ordered nanometric precipitates proposed for bulk samples. Synchrotron diffraction excludes the formation of long-range L60, or D03 precipitates in samples with (001)A2 peaks at concentrations around 25 at. % Ga, which implies partial chemical disorder. The analysis of extended x-ray absorption fine structure measurements points to a D03 local order with a residual number of Ga-Ga pairs. Considering that the substrate quenches the movable strain in the A2 phase described in dual-phase structures, our results point to the important role of the electronic structure of the iron atoms modified by the presence of Ga in the alloy. This effect enlarges B1 in films with the A2 phase, stabilized using epitaxial growth., We thanks grant TED2021-131064B-I00 funded by MCIN/AEI/10.13039/501100011033 and by European Union NextGenerationEU/PRTR, grant PID2021-124734OB-C21 funded by MCIN /AEI /10.13039/501100011033 and by “ERDF A way of making Europe” and grant CEX2023-001286-S funded by MICIU/AEI /10.13039/501100011033 and Gobierno de Aragón, Spain (grant E12-23R).
