Plant root exudates are involved in nutrient acquisition, microbial partnerships, and inter-organism signaling. Yet, little is known about the genetic and environmental drivers of root exudate variation at large geographical scales, which may help understand evolutionary trajectories of plants in heterogeneous environments. We quantified natural variation in chemical composition of Arabidopsis thaliana root exudates in 105 Iberian accessions. We identified up to 373 putative compounds using ultra-high performance liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry. We estimated broad-sense heritability of compounds and conducted a genome-wide association (GWA) study. We associated variation in root exudates to variation in geographic, environmental, life history, and genetic attributes of Iberian accessions. Only 25 of 373 compounds exhibited broad-sense heritability values significantly different from zero. GWA analysis identified polymorphisms associated to 12 root exudate compounds and 26 known genes involved in metabolism, defense, signaling, and nutrient transport. The genetic structure influenced root exudate composition involving terpenoids. We detected five terpenoids related to plant defense significantly varying in mean abundances in two genetic clusters. Our study provides first insights into the extent of root exudate natural variation at a regional scale depicting a diversified evolutionary trajectory among A. thaliana genetic clusters chiefly mediated by terpenoid composition., European Union : 101029678, Horizon 2020 and Marie Sklodowska-Curie Action; Agencia Estatal de Investigación : PID2023-147962NB-I00, Peer reviewed

[EN] Fecal fiber is a known nutritional indicator, and its monitoring has allowed the assessment of food availability, health status of individuals, and changes in environmental conditions. In this study, NIRS was applied to predict fiber content (NDF, ADF, ADL) in wild and domestic herbivore fecal samples. Samples were provided by several European research groups. Our results showed that an herbivore multispecies NIRS calibration can be used with high accuracy to assess fecal fiber contents.

El dataset se puede consultar y descargar en el siguiente enlace https://doi.org/10.5061/dryad.1rn8pk142, Milder winters over High Arctic regions have dramatic impacts on local biodiversity on Svalbard, with rain-on-snow events directly correlated with reindeer mortality. Vertebrate carrion can have disproportionately larger impacts on vegetation in nutrient-limited systems, compared with warmer biomes. We conducted a ground survey on the cover of five plant functional groups at paired carcass and control sites and analysed the relationship between cover and carcass presence with generalised linear mixed effect models. Vegetation indices from RGB imagery captured by drones complemented this, assessing plant productivity in terms of ‘spectral greening’. We modelled the relationship between vegetation index values and carcass distance with generalised additive models. We show that graminoids capitalised most from carcass presence, whereas bryophytes and lichen showed decreases in cover. Woody plants and herb covers were not significantly impacted by carcass presence. The Red Green Blue Vegetation Index (RGBVI, our proxy for vegetation productivity) decreased locally at fresh carcasses (i.e. <1 year old) but showed an increase at more established carcass sites (i.e. >1 year). We show that carcasses have differential impacts on the plant functional groups of Svalbard’s tundra and induce a local ‘green-up’ with secondary succession within 2 metres. Given their non-random distribution, carcasses may contribute to vegetation heterogeneity at landscape scales. This is relevant for understanding how climate change-induced reindeer mortalities will impact Arctic tundra composition in the future., Norwegian Polar Institute, Climate Ecological Observatory for Arctic Tundra, The Research Council of Norway , Arctic Field Grant 2021 Nord University : 300028-111, Research Development Grant, Peer reviewed
