El Concilio de Trento hizo una importante contribución al desarrollo de la doctrina y la disciplina canónica en relación con el sacramento del matrimonio. La confirmación de la indisolubilidad está en primer plano -formulada muy claramente en el canon- en torno a la cual surgieron dudas sobre su valor doctrinal.
