CuInS2 quantum dots (QDs) have gained significant attention owing to their remarkable broadband emission, making them desirable for various optoelectronic applications requiring efficient luminescent nanomaterials. How-ever, maximizing radiative recombination in CuInS2 QDs necessitates minimizing intragap trap states. A common approach involves the introduction of Zn during the synthesis, which typically promotes the formation of a ZnS shell that passivates the QD surface. Despite its importance, the characterization and quantification of Zn incorporation using conventional techniques, such as optical spectroscopy or electron microscopy, remains challenging. In this study, we utilized X-ray absorption spectroscopy, in both X-ray absorption near-edge structure and extended X-ray absorption fine structure spectral ranges, to investigate Zn incorporation into CuInS2 QDs, probing at the Zn, S, and Cu K-edges. This approach allowed us to detect the formation of a ZnS surface shell, tentatively quantifying its thickness, and to distinguish between Zn as a substituent at the shell or as an interstitial defect. Additionally, we explored the dynamical properties of CuInS2 QDs using time-resolved optical spectroscopies, particularly in the presence of electron and hole acceptors (benzoquinone and phenothiazine), observing that hole transfer is highly sensitive to shell thickness. These results provide deeper insights into the Zn-induced shell, A.B.-C. is grateful to the Spanish “Ministerio de Universidades” and the “Plan de Recuperación, Transformación y Resiliencia”, as well as the UAM, for his “Margarita Salas” grant (ref CA1/RSUE/2021-00809). Moiré materials represent strongly interacting electron systems bridging topological and correlated physics. Despite notable advances, decoding wavefunction properties underlying the quantum geometry remains challenging. Here we utilize polarization-resolved photocurrent measurements to probe magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene, leveraging its sensitivity to the Berry connection that encompasses quantum 'textures' of electron wavefunctions. Using terahertz light resonant with optical transitions of its flat bands, we observe bulk photocurrents driven by broken symmetries and reveal the interplay between electron interactions and quantum geometry. We observe inversion-breaking gapped states undetectable through quantum transport, sharp changes in the polarization axes caused by interaction-induced band renormalization and recurring photocurrent patterns at integer filling factors of the moiré unit cell that track the evolution of quantum geometry through the cascade of phase transitions. The large and tunable terahertz response intrinsic to flat-band systems offers direct insights into the quantum geometry of interacting electrons and paves the way for innovative terahertz quantum technologies., R.B. acknowledges funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under the Marie Skłodowska-Curie grant agreement no. 847517. MnTe has recently emerged as a canonical altermagnet, a newly identified class of magnetism characterized by compensated antiferromagnetic order coexisting with spin-split electronic bands, traditionally considered exclusive to ferromagnets. However, the extent to which altermagnetism persists as altermagnets are thinned to the 2D limit remains largely unexplored. Here, the magnetic behavior of two-dimensional (2D) MnTe is investigated, specifically atomically-thin monolayers (MLs) and bilayers (BLs) grown on graphene/Ir(111) substrate, by combining experimental scanning tunneling microscopy, X-ray photoelectron microscopy, X-ray absorption spectroscopy, and X-ray magnetic circular dichroism with density functional theory calculations. It is found that while ML and BL MnTe adopt atomic structures with symmetries incompatible with altermagnetism, they exhibit intriguing magnetic phases: the BL forms a highly-robust layered antiferromagnet with in-plane spin anisotropy, whereas the ML presents characteristics compatible with spin-glass behavior below its freezing temperature, a phenomenon not previously observed in an atomically thin material. These findings highlight how reduced dimensionality can promote the emergence of unusual magnetic structures distinct from those of their 3D counterparts, providing new insights into low-dimensional magnetism., This work was supported by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation and the European Union, Grant Nos.
