Training and research in phonetics for Spanish as a second language with technological support

Foreign language acquisition must inevitably start with phonetics, an aspect of language whose importance is matched only by its neglect. Different research has shown how the systematic teaching of pronunciation is beneficial not only because it aids the comprehension of messages and their expression, but also because it diminishes the anxiety students feel when communicating orally. Furthermore, pronunciation is the first indication of social identity, with all that means for one's integration in or exclusion from a speech community. But nevertheless, phonetics practice takes a back seat in foreign language teaching programmes, in teacher training, in teaching material and, above all, in research work, and this is particularly true in the case of teaching Spanish as a second language. In order to redress this situation, researchers from nine universities have put together an oral corpus and developed a series of resources, tools and applications which can all be accessed at a website for cooperative and interactive work called Fono.ele. The corpus is the first to gather together a significant and representative number of oral recordings of learners of Spanish. It also breaks new ground in embarking on a general study of the pronunciation of Spanish/L2 in relation to social, cultural and educational factors. In addition, it makes available data regarding oral production and auditory perception. As for its applications, they enable those who may be interested (researchers and/or teachers) to handle and manage the speech extracts from the oral corpus, to carry out searches in the phonological errors data base, to obtain quantitative and statistical data, to interconnect text, sound and data, and to devise training exercises. All the foregoing can be done using our materials (that is, in collaboration with the AACFELE Project) or the user's own materials (for the preparation of new projects). Our article describes these resources, explains their features and functions, and indicates the options they offer different kinds of users., Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación

We assume that both components evolve in parallel, as they are complementary activities that depend on each other. To evaluate the perception skills of a large group of Spanish students, identify what
phonetic aspects are more challenging and determine the impact of language proficiency
level on perception, 204 students of Spanish as a Second Language (ssl) participated in
a perception test. The students were native speakers of ten different languages and their
proficiency in Spanish ranged from level A2 to C1 (according to the cefr standard). A total of 61 200 answers were obtained and subjected to statistical analysis. Results show
that the perceptive skills of participants were highly homogeneous and no statistically
significant differences were found with regard to the native linguistic command of the
speaker. We conclude that the development of perception skills in ssl follows a temporal
pattern different from that of production skills., Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación

Within the field of didactics of second language teaching, it is believed that phonic errors cannot be completely
corrected due to the significant influence of L1. However, improving the processes of acquisition of an L2
implies learning pronunciation properly. Given the importance of pronunciation for communication, it is
necessary to deeply know the nature of phonic errors, which requires a specific classification aimed to describe,
classify and categorize them. This article is intended to test the validity and efficiency of the taxonomy
developed in the project AACFELE. To accomplish our objective we: a) collected the most significant phonic
errors made by learners of Spanish from nine different nationalities and b) categorized those errors. As a
result, we found that the classification entails plenty of trouble caused by the impossibility of marking the
boundaries of the numerous phenomena involved in the pronunciation of a sound; that is why we considered
the need of redefining some of the suggested categories and assessed the adequacy of maintaining other
ones less useful. Despite these circumstances, the most significant outcome was the reliable proof that the
taxonomy AACFELE allowed us to label and describe diverse phonic errors using common criteria, which
represents the first step to accurately study phonic acquisition of a foreign language., Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación

Corpus oral para el estudio de la adquisición y aprendizaje del componente fónico del español como lengua extranjera, Oral corpus for the study of the acquisition and learning of the phonic component of Spanish as a foreign language

The lack of attention to the phonics component in teaching Spanish as a foreign
language decisively impacts the communicative competence of students, in terms of
oral expression, comprehension and interactive skills and other related sub-competence
(linguistic, pragmatic and sociolinguistic). With regard to students, both anxiety and
lack of confidence in their ability to pronounce also cloud their process of learning. This
situation, therefore, requires compiling oral materials and analysis tools aimed at improving
studies on the acquisition and learning of the phonics component. The results obtained
from these studies can be used to improve teaching, develop training materials, program

- Blanco Canales, Ana|||0000-0002-5458-8095
The influence of L1 on auditory perception of Spanish/L2. The objective of this paper is to examine
first language influence on phonic perception capabilities by non-native speakers of Spanish and subsequently analyze some of the existing links between perception and production processes in foreign language acquisition. The
assumption is made that both processes are interlinked, and that they develop in line with each other, as the phonological categorization of new units—whereby proper speech production is achieved—starts from complex perceptual processes wherein the first language (L1) plays a crucial role. In order to conduct the study, a perceptual test was
taken by 300 students (both men and women) from 20 different countries. Spanish levels ranged from A2 to C1. Data
collected (61,200 responses) has been analyzed both quantitatively and qualitatively. Our results show that first language influence on perception is low. They also suggest that, although dependent on each other, production and perception are developed differently., Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación

Contenido presentado a: Asociación Española de Lingüística Aplicada. Congreso (31. 2013. The goal of this paper is to present in a detailed fashion some of the
technological resources developed within the research project AACFELE
(FFI2012-21034), specifically Fono.data, Corpus Fono.ele and Fono.ele+.
These computer tools have been designed to improve theoretical and applied
research related to the phonic-component of language from a twofold
perspective: on the one hand, they serve the specific research goals of the
AACFELE project and are used by the research team; on the other, they
have also been created to be accessible to researchers working on the soundcomponent of language with different goals and interests. This dual purpose

This article is aimed to present a proposal for the categorization of phonic errors, which has
been developed within the project AACFELE, with the objective of studying the Phonics component in
depth. Throughout these pages we are intended to display both the theoretical framework in which the
proposal has been formulated and the criteria which have been followed. We will describe the different
sections and subsections of the classification and illustrate each one of them with examples of phonic
mistakes made by native speakers of eleven distinct languages. Our main goal is to provide a tool for
analysis that makes it possible to describe, categorize and tag, uniformly, any type of phonic error in
such a way that the outcomes obtained with prospective studies, apart from being comparable, will
contribute to valid hypothesis formulation. We hope that it will promote further studies in order to
embrace both error analysis and interlanguage from a multidimensional perspective., Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación
