[EN]This paper is devoted to the analysis of the preserved remains of the castillo de La Peña or fortaleza Alta de Martos (Jaén), an important archaeological site with substantial standing structures. It was the main castle and headquarters of the master of the Military Order of Calatrava at the Command of Martos. Until its abandonment in the sixteenth century, this stronghold was an important Christian spot in the border territory contrary to the Nasrid kingdom of Granada between the thirteenth and fifteenth centuries. Besides the critical review of the existing documentation on this outstanding example of defensive medieval architecture, the fieldwork and the updated complete survey of the standing structures on the site has played a fundamental role in this analysis. The results of this research constitute an important advance in the knowledge of this Listed Building and contribute new hitherto unpublished information. [EN] The Kingdom of Granada occupied the southeast of the Iberian Peninsula, what today would be the current Spanish provinces of Granada, Malaga and Almeria. Having succeeded the Nasrid kingdom of Granada (1238-1492), it remained a geographical and administrative unit until 1834, defended from the advancement of Castilian troops by means of a large network of watchtowers located principally along its inland border. Following the Castilian conquest of Granada, the extensive coastline was also strengthened with a network of towers and fortifications that were progressively adapted to house artillery. A technical survey focusing on the characteristics of their geometrics and construction, as well as their performance in a series of non-destructive tests, such as ambient vibration testing, was undertaken to study the towers' mechanical strength against both gravitational and seismic loads. The results propose a numerical estimate that defines the fundamental frequency of this type of structure, which in turn can be used to approximate the mechanical properties of the masonry. Such a precise definition based on objective data enables accurate and rigorous numerical analysis of this defensive architecture, thus reducing uncertainties. Furthermore, slenderness is found to be a relevant parameter for adjusting fundamental frequency and for analysing the towers' historical evolution, enabling their initial height and number of levels to be estimated., This research has been carried out within the framework of the Spanish National R&D Research Planthrough the project called “The watchtowers that defended the Nasrid Kingdom of Granada. Scientific analysisand survey” (HAR2016-79689-P) funded by the Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness, Government of Spain, Peer reviewed

The International Conference was postponed to 4th, 5thand 6thof November 2020, in response to the Covid-19 pandemic., [EN] This article deals with the analysis of the conserved remains of the water storage system of the Castle the Rock or the High Fortress of Martos (La Peña or Fortaleza Alta de Martos), which constituted the castle and main headquarters of the Master of the Order of Calatrava at the Commander of Martos between the thirteenth and fifteenth centuries. The elements that compose it make a unique hydraulic complex that still allows to be recognized and documented.
Due to its importance and meaning, this castle is one that better shows the constructive techniques and the polyorcetic typologies developed and updated by this Order in its Commands in Castile-La Manche and Andalusia. The hydraulic system to supply water to this rocky fortress is a reflect of these technology, and it is unique in its design and layout., Este trabajo ha sido realizado como parte de la investigación doctoral de Fernando Ortega Camacho y en el marco del Proyecto I+D+i “Las atalayas que defendieron el reino de nazarí de Granada. Comunicación presentada en The International Conference on Fortifications of the Mediterranean Coast. FORTMED 2020, Granada, 26th, 27th and 28th of March. The International Conference was postponed to 4th, 5thand 6thof November 2020, in response to the Covid-19 pandemic., [EN] The castle of Montefrío (Granada) was one of the fortresses that formed the last line of defense of the Nasrid kingdom. After its surrender, in 1486, the castle served as a Castilian border stronghold until the fall of the Nasrid capital, Granada, six years later, which put an end to the Christian conquest of al-Andalus.This work tries to analyze the evolution of the hill were the castle is, from the implantation of the Nasrid fortress to the present day, through the continuous transformations from a citadel, a military fortress, a church and, today, a centre of interpretation. This place is a territorial and landscape landmark that has shaped the environment of Montefrío and has been a key piece in its history and in its urban development. The study focuses on the analysis of the evolution of the constructive techniques developed by the Nasrid and the Castilian for the defense of this stronghold, through the archaeological remains preserved in the site. The preliminary study of this castle is a starting point for a deeper investigation that will be extended to other fortresses in the mountainous region between Córdoba and Granada. The study of the castle of Montefrío is therefore a methodological approach that will serve as the basis for a more extensive territorial research., Este trabajo ha sido realizado como parte de la investigación doctoral de Rafael Moreno Guerrero y en el marco del Proyecto I+D+i “Las atalayas que defendieron el reino de nazarí de Granada. Comunicación presentada en The International Conference on Fortifications of the Mediterranean Coast. FORTMED 2020, Granada, 26th, 27th, and 28th of March 2020. The International Conference was postponed to 4th, 5th and 6thof November 2020, in response to the Covid-19 pandemic., [EN] The Spanish coast preserves many watchtowers as an important cultural heritage. They testify the insecurity of this maritime border in different historical periods, especially during the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries, when it was attacked regularly by what has come to be known as Berber piracy. The territory of Vélez-Málaga was not alien to this process and, after the Castilian conquest of the Axarquía region in the late fifteenth century, the western border between the Christian and the Islamic kingdoms of the western Mediterranean moved to the southeaster coast of the Iberian Peninsula. The municipal district of Vélez-Málaga has an important architectural and archaeological heritage from different origins, including its defensive structures. They belong to a broader military system in the territory that consisted of coastal and inland watchtowers, farmstead towers, fortified enclosures in addition to the castle and the urban walls of Vélez-Málaga. This paper presents the first data obtained from the diagnosis of this heritage in the frame of the programme of conservation of the defensive architecture from the municipality of Vélez-Málaga.

[EN] Purpose Heritage landmarks and historical values often coexist with places and regions of remarkable environmental and landscape wealth. This article studies their capacity to generate global understanding of their territory through the creation of cultural routes. The proposed methodology is verified through the study of the defensive features of the ancient Nasrid Kingdom, the last Islamic territory in the Iberian Peninsula from the thirteenth to the fifteenth century, which shaped the Spanish region known as the Kingdom of Granada until the nineteenth century. Design/methodology/approach To assist in the proposal of new routes, a precise collection of physical data (topography, landmarks, resources, population centres …), existing public paths and protected natural sites was carried out. Those cultural routes relevant to the area of study were also selected and mapped through GIS. A set of indicators prioritised through an analytic hierarchy process (AHP) have evaluated the proposed itineraries. Findings The methodology enables the integral evaluation of parameters such as natural heritage, existing paths networks, defensive architectural heritage (watchtowers), existing cultural routes or proximity to basic services. The methodology's application allows an index to be obtained that quantifies the global implications of these parameters in the design of new itineraries. This leads to the development of a network with its own narrative that provides a historical, environmental and cultural meaning. Originality/value Watchtowers in this region have previously been studied as isolated and locally relevant architectural features. This work studies them from an overall perspective, considering each tower as a piece of a complex defensive and territorial system. [EN] The last Islamic kingdom in the Iberian Peninsula was ruled by the Nasrid dynasty during the thirteenth to fifteenth centuries around Granada. It was divided into about twenty administrative districts, and Loja, located in the northern center area, was one of the most important and strategic ones. It had a high density of fortifications of different nature, some of which date back to very ancient times. This contribution is the result of the intense digital documentation that has been carried out on the graphic representation of these assets. They have been completed with the use of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) to obtain the necessary graphic information to represent these architectures by means of precise planimetrical surveys, documenting and diagnosing
their current state., The research has been completed within the frame of the R & D project led by Luis José García-Pulido and Jonathan Ruiz-Jaramillo: ‘The watchtowers that defended the Nasrid kingdom of Granada: Scientific analysis and documentation (NAZALAYA)’ (reference HAR2016-79689-P), National

Disappeared medieval watchtowers in Granada (Spain). Workflow and standards for the survey of a vanished architectural heritage

Among all the Spanish regions, the province of Granada stands out for the large number of isolated towers of which there are still remains. More than 150 are of medieval origin and preserved to a greater or lesser degree. This is due to the fact that Granada was the core of the Nasrid kingdom, the last surviving Andalusian territory in the southeast of the Iberian Peninsula. It had more than 400 km of land border with the kingdom of Castile through the Penibaetic System and another 400 km of Mediterranean coastline. This kingdom, whose centre of power was the Alhambra in Granada, came to occupy approximately 2,949,373 ha after the Pact of Jaén, the agreement signed in 1246 between Ferdinand III of Castile and the first Nasrid king, Muḥammad I ibn Nasr, which established the border between the two kingdoms. The kingdom of Granada was maintained with few modifications over the next two and a half centuries, until the War of Granada, which caused it to collapse between 1482 and 1491. Many of these towers were reused, remade or built in the Nasrid period, but, after the Christian process of conquest, many of the towers in the interior were rendered unusable or totally or partially destroyed. This work develops the methodology of the workflow that has been followed to detect the location of many other nodes of this dense network based on the analysis of topony-my. The historical accounts show that there were many more watchtowers to survey and protect this kingdom than the ones previously known., The research has been completed within the frame of the R & D project led by Luis José García-Pulido and Jonathan Ruiz-Jaramillo: ‘The watchtowers that defended the Nasrid kingdom of Granada: Scientific analysis and documentation (NAZALAYA)’ (reference HAR2016-79689-P), National Program for the Promotion of Scientific and Technical Research, call of 2016, supported by the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities, Government of Spain, co-financed with funds FEDER, developed at the High Technical School of Architecture at the University of Malaga., Peer reviewed

Comunicación presentada en The International Conference on Fortifications of the Mediterranean Coast. FORTMED 2023, Pisa, 23, 24 and 25 March 2023., [EN] The district of Baza took up more than a fourth of the Nasrid kingdom of Granada, the last Islamic region in the Iberian Peninsula (thirteenth to fifteenth centuries). This area encompassed the northern highlands of
this region, the Almanzora river valley and other areas that would later be incorporated into the province of Almeria. The province of Granada came to include the municipalities that nowadays constitute the Baza and Huéscar highlands. There are more than thirty preserved watchtowers in these areas. They are in strategic points with wide visibility, enabling communication through smoke signals during daylight or beacons at night. In the Nasrid period this system was reinforced, and new towers were built in locations of special relevance. They are usually made in masonry with gravel filling, with circular base and cylindrical or tapered shape, with the solid base and a single chamber with elevated access for the tower watch, from which the plume of smoke could rise through a hole in the terrace. The upper part was intended for the canopy and, if necessary, to make a beacon. This network not only allowed the information about what was happening in the district to reach the main fortresses, and ultimately, to arrive to the Alhambra citadel, the seat of the Nasrid dynasty. This paper is focused in the digital survey that has been carried out on the towers preserved in these areas, in the northern border of the Nasrid kingdom of Granada, allowing a

[EN] The castle of Montefrío (Granada) was one of the fortresses that formed the last line of defense of the
Nasrid kingdom. After its surrender, in 1486, the castle served as a Castilian border stronghold until the
fall of the Nasrid capital, Granada, six years later, which put an end to the Christian conquest of al-Andalus.This work tries to analyze the evolution of the hill were the castle is, from the implantation of the
Nasrid fortress to the present day, through the continuous transformations from a citadel, a military fortress, a church and, today, a centre of interpretation. This place is a territorial and landscape landmark that
has shaped the environment of Montefrío and has been a key piece in its history and in its urban development. The study focuses on the analysis of the evolution of the constructive techniques developed by the
Nasrid and the Castilian for the defense of this stronghold, through the archaeological remains preserved in
the site. The preliminary study of this castle is a starting point for a deeper investigation that will be
extended to other fortresses in the mountainous region between Córdoba and Granada. The study of the
castle of Montefrío is therefore a methodological approach that will serve as the basis for a more extensive

[EN] The Spanish coast preserves many watchtowers as an important cultural heritage. They testify the insecurity of this maritime border in different historical periods, especially during the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries, when it was attacked regularly by what has come to be known as Berber piracy.
The territory of Vélez-Málaga was not alien to this process and, after the Castilian conquest of the Axarquía region in the late fifteenth century, the western border between the Christian and the Islamic
kingdoms of the western Mediterranean moved to the southeaster coast of the Iberian Peninsula.
The municipal district of Vélez-Málaga has an important architectural and archaeological heritage
from different origins, including its defensive structures. They belong to a broader military system in the
territory that consisted of coastal and inland watchtowers, farmstead towers, fortified enclosures in addition to the castle and the urban walls of Vélez-Málaga.
This paper presents the first data obtained from the diagnosis of this heritage in the frame of the programme of conservation of the defensive architecture from the municipality of Vélez-Málaga., Este trabajo ha sido realizado en el marco del
