The high population density and sustained industrialisation of recent decades have significantly intensified the emission of atmospheric pollutants, making air quality one of the main environmental challenges worldwide. Ensuring clean air—free from risks to human health and to the balance of ecosystems—is a fundamental objective of environmental and public health policies aimed at improving quality of life. However, despite regulatory progress and the implementation of increasingly stringent measures, the actual effectiveness of the actions undertaken remains insufficient to halt atmospheric degradation in urban areas. A clear example of this is provided by recent air quality reports published by the European Environment Agency (EEA), which reveal that 75 % of the urban population in Europe remains exposed to pollution levels harmful to health. Nitrogen oxides (NOₓ = NO + NO₂) are among the most harmful pollutants due to their high reactivity and synergistic effects in the atmosphere. Prolonged exposure to these compounds is associated with an increased incidence of both acute and chronic respiratory illnesses and contributes significantly to environmental phenomena such as photochemical smog, soil acidification, and acid rain. The magnitude of this risk is reflected in annual mortality data published by the EEA, which attributes more than 54000 premature deaths across Europe each year to sustained NO₂ exposure—a figure that rises to approximately 6800 cases in Spain. In response to this issue, heterogeneous photocatalysis has emerged as a promising technology for the “in situ” degradation of NOx gases (DeNOx process). Based on the activation of a semiconductor material by sunlight, this process enables the oxidation of NOx into less harmful species such as nitrates and nitrites under ambient temperature and pressure. These characteristics position photocatalysis as a key strategy in the development of environmentally friendly and sustainable technologies for air pollution mitigation. Nevertheless, the practical application of this technology still faces limitations, mainly due to low quantum efficiency, limited visible-light absorption, and the insufficient long-term stability of conventional photocatalysts. In this context, Layered Double Hydroxides (LDHs) have emerged as a particularly promising family of materials for photocatalytic applications in NOx remediation, due to their low cost, ease of synthesis, high chemical stability, compositional flexibility, industrial scalability, and notable selectivity in DeNOx processes. This Doctoral Thesis focuses on the design and optimisation of LDH-based photocatalysts using advanced strategies such as ionic doping, heterojunction formation, and morphological control at the nanoscale. These modifications aim to enhance the materials' efficiency in the photooxidative degradation of NOx and extend their photoresponse into the visible spectrum. Accordingly, a series of photocatalytic systems have been synthesised and thoroughly characterised, yielding results that not only demonstrate improvements in NOx removal, but also contribute to a deeper understanding of the photochemical mechanisms governing their behaviour.

Datasets del documento disponibles en: http://hdl.handle.net/10396/34289, The presence of nitrogen oxides (NOx) in urban areas has adverse effects on both human health and the environment, but efficient and affordable photocatalytic elimination of NOx represents a challenge. In this study, we investigated a series of Aqueous Miscible Organic Solvent Treatment Layered Double Hydroxides (AMO-LDHs), Znx(Mg3−x)Al-CO3 AMO-LDHs (0 ≤ x ≤ 3), for the photocatalytic removal of gaseous NOx from air (DeNOx process). Considering that zinc is an “endangered element” where projected demand is far greater than known reserves, the aim was to identify a sustainable, low-cost material with promising photocatalytic properties by modifying the Mg/Zn ratio. The LDHs were prepared using a simple co-precipitation method followed by Aqueous Miscible Organic Solvent Treatment (AMOST). All the samples exhibited uniform metal distribution without impurities. Incorporation of Zn into the AMO-LDH structure increased the nanosheet thickness and reduced their aggregation, resulting in slight morphological changes. It also influenced the positions of the valence and conduction bands, thereby affecting the photochemical mechanism. Among the studied compositions, Zn0.5Mg2.5Al AMO-LDH showed the most promising performance for NOx removal, offering NOx removal efficiencies of 51 %, low NO₂ formation with outstanding selectivity (up to 93 %) and significantly enhanced efficiency compared to Mg3Al AMO-LDH or commercial ZnO. Furthermore, this sample exhibited exceptional stability and reusability, maintaining its photocatalytic efficiency throughout the repeated cycles, highlighting its potential for practical DeNOx application.
