Constructing threat through proximization in digital news: a multimodal analysis
e_Buah Biblioteca Digital Universidad de Alcalá

This paper explores the multimodal realization of social polarization in European digital news through the construction of threat. Drawing from both media and communication studies and cognitive critical discourse analysis, this study investigates how media framing and event-construal operations shape news interpretations through a proximization strategy. For this purpose, a multilingual sample of 73 European newsbites about the attack on Brazilian congress by the followers of former president Jair Bolsonaro was collected.
The analysis reveals several framing devices and construal operations that present the events in Brazil as relevant and potentially threatening to European audiences. Findings indicate that media framing encourages European readers to sympathize with Brazil’s current government under Lula da Silva, while portraying Bolsonaro’s supporters as an imminent threat, thereby reflecting and reinforcing polarization in public perception. These results offer valuable insights for media discourse analysts, cognitive linguists, and researchers examining polarized discourse., Agencia Estatal de Investigación

Polarisation, the new "superword": meanings and current uses in English and Spanish
e_Buah Biblioteca Digital Universidad de Alcalá

A growing concern in most European countries, ‘polarisation’ has spread far beyond the political arena and is now present in public opinion in a wide variety of social and cultural subjects, from economics to education, health, environment or religion. Rather than an enriching plurality of views, polarisation is mostly perceived as a negative trend that hinders consensus and favours conflict instead, threatening welfare, peace and even democracy. As a result, the word polarisation has become a frequent term in the press. This paper examines the way in which the word polarización/polarisation is used in a corpus of news items collected from four widely read mainstream newspapers, two Spanish and two British, all of them containing the word polarización/polarisation and published in 2022. A combination of Corpus Linguistics methods and a Critical SocioCognitive approach to Discourse Analysis has been followed in order to analyse the most common contexts and patterns of usage of the term in the press in these two countries, its negative semantic prosody and collocational behaviour, as well as the underlying schematic conceptualization of the phenomenon as realized in metaphors and image schemas. Even though minor differences have been found, results show significant similarities in Spanish and English, which manifest the negative evaluation associated to the term construed by its collocates, by metaphorical source domains such as 'disease', 'war' or 'dangerous natural forces', as well as by image schemas that impinge on physical and ideological distance. Conclusions suggest that polarisation has become a sociopolitical keyword; a ‘superword’ with enhanced meanings and strong framing effects in the texts in which it occurs., Agencia Estatal de Investigación
Water metaphors and evaluation of Syrian migration: the flow of refugees in the Spanish press
e_Buah Biblioteca Digital Universidad de Alcalá
- Porto Requejo, María Dolores|||0000-0003-0111-9356
In 2015 and 2016, European newspapers covered the Syrian migration into
Europe in great detail, describing the path followed by millions of refugees as
European authorities put up both physical and metaphorical obstacles to
stop their advance. WATER metaphors, a common resource in immigration
discourse, were extensively used in the media during this period. Apparently
neutral, expressions like the flow of refugees or a new wave of immigrants
seemed to be devoid of ideological bias, and so an objective, factual way to
present the news about it. This paper presents an in-depth analysis of the
contexts in which WATER metaphors were used in two ideologically opposed
Spanish newspapers in this period. Results show that their descriptive function was surpassed by the evaluative one, as revealed by the high frequency
of FORCE DYNAMIC schemas underlying the FLOW metaphor, the most frequent
one in the sample. Negatively charged, the frequent use of flow to refer to
Syrian refugees could have affected public opinion on the event. Also,
a contrastive analysis suggests that there are subtle differences between
the right and the left wing when using these metaphors, but they are not as
significant as expected, since both newspapers tend to avoid overt negativity
in their discourse on Syrian migration. Considering the relatively small size of
the sample, further work needs to be done to confirm these results in the
Spanish press and also to extend the analysis to other European media., Agencia Estatal de Investigación

Corpora of Venezuelan political discourses (Maduro and Guaidó, 2019-2020)
e-cienciaDatos, Repositorio de Datos del Consorcio Madroño
- Peterssen, Silvia

The project's main aim is to explore the discursive construction of polarisation in two corpora of political discourses (one including speeches and interviews, and another X posts) of Nicolás Maduro and Juan Guaidó, the key figures in the Venezuelan Presidential Crisis. This event began on January 23rd, 2019, when Juan Guaidó proclaimed himself interim president of Venezuela even though Nicolás Maduro had already won the general elections in May 2018. To analyse polarisation in this context and corpus, the project looks at its evaluative collocates, polarising metaphors and social actor representations.

This sample contains two corpora: one of 5 political speeches addressed by Maduro and Guaidó and 4 political interviews targeting these leaders and carried out by the international TV channels BBC and Euronews (33547 words in total), and another of 5448 X posts (199916 words) posted in Nicolás Maduro and Juan Guaidó's official X accounts (@NicolasMaduro and @JGuaido, respectively) during the first and most active year of the presidential crisis, i.e., 2019-2020. Both original posts and retweets are included. Posts in languages other than Spanish were excluded, as well as those containing only emojis and images. As for the political speeches and interviews, the speeches were delivered by both leaders the day of Guaidó's self-proclamation (23 January 2019) and exactly a year after that (23 January 2020), and the interviews were conducted around the same dates (February and March 2019), as detailed below:

e-cienciaDatos, Repositorio de Datos del Consorcio Madroño
- Mañoso-Pacheco, Lidia
- Sánchez Cabrero, Roberto

The project’s aims are to: (1) analyse the current level of usage and acceptance of non-sexist language among the group of pre-service teacher selected in the study; and (2) investigate the correlation between the language of instruction (Spanish vs. English) and the participants’ stance on this issue.

The corpus selected for the analysis is derived from a questionnaire in Spanish, completed by 348 trainee teachers enrolled in pre-primary and primary education programmes in Spain during the 2021–2022 academic year. The first part focused on collecting attributive information and defining the characteristics of the sample. It also included a mandatory written informed consent form. The remainder of the questionnaire was divided into three main sections, comprising 12 closed-ended items. These items explored: participants’ use and perception of inclusive language (IL) in an academic context (Section 1); their perception of professors’ use of IL (Section 2); and their intention to use IL with their future students (Section 3).
