This package contains the datasets and supplementary materials used in the IPIN 2020 Competition. Contents: IPIN2020_Track03_TechnicalAnnex_V1-01.pdf: Technical annex describing the competition 01-Logfiles: This folder contains a subfolder with the 78 training logfiles, 72 of them single floor, 4 in bookshelves areas and 2 of them in floor-transition zones, a subfolder with the 13 validation logfiles, and a subfolder with the 1 blind evaluation logfile as provided to competitors. 02-Supplementary_Materials: This folder contains the matlab/octave parser, the raster maps, the files for the matlab tools and the trajectory visualization. 03-Evaluation: This folder contains the scripts used to calculate the competition metric, the 75th percentile on the 82 evaluation points. It requires the Matlab Mapping Toolbox. The ground truth is also provided as a CSV file. Since the results must be provided with a 2Hz freq. starting from apptimestamp 0, the GT includes the closest timestamp matching the timing provided by competitors. It contains a sample of reported estimations and the corresponding results. Additionally, we provide a second script to provide a more detailed report on the results file (requires export_fig folder to run)., Parts of this work were carried out with the financial support received from projects and grants: - A-WEAR (H2020-MSCA-ITN-2018, Grant Agreement 813278) - INSIGNIA (PTQ2018-009981) - REPNIN+ network (TEC2017-90808-REDT) - LORIS (TIN2012-38080-C04-04) - SmartLoc(CSIC-PIE Ref.201450E011) - TARSIUS (TIN2015-71564-C4-2-R, MINECO/FEDER) - MICROCEBUS (MICINN, ref. UP IN THE AIR: THREATS TO AFROMONTANE BIODIVERSITY FROM CLIMATE CHANGE AND HABITAT LOSS REVEALED BY GENETIC MONITORING OF THE ETHIOPIAN HIGHLANDS BAT

  • Razgour, Orly

[Methods] This dataset is for 50 Bale long-eared bats, Plecotus balensis, captured in five moutnain ranges in Ethiopia 2014-2015 and genotyped for 19 polymorphic autosomal microsatellite loci previously developed for the genus (Razgour et al., 2013, Ecology Letters, https://doi.org/10.1111/ele.12158) and two mitochondrial DNA regions: 650 bp fragment of the gene cytochrome b (cytb) and 460 bp fragment of the hyper-variable region (HV1) of the control region. The microsatellite dataset is presented as genepop file. Sequence assembly of the concatenated cytochrome b and hyper-variable I region of the mitochondrial DNA is presented as .fasta file. The dataset also includes output of the Maxent species distribution models and STRUCTURE (Bayesian individual-based assignment tests) outputs., Whilst climate change is recognised as a major future threat to biodiversity, most species are currently threatened by extensive human-induced habitat loss, fragmentation and degradation. Tropical high altitude alpine and montane forest ecosystems and their biodiversity are particularly sensitive to temperature increases under climate change, but they are also subject to accelerated pressures from land conversion and degradation due to a growing human population. We studied the combined effects of anthropogenic land-use change, past and future climate changes and mountain range isolation on the endemic Ethiopian Highlands long-eared bat, Plecotus balensis, an understudied bat that is restricted to the remnant natural high altitude Afroalpine and Afromontane habitats. We integrated ecological niche modelling, landscape genetics and model-based inference to assess the genetic, geographic and demographic impacts of past and recent environmental changes. We show that mountain range isolation and historic climates shaped population structure and patterns of genetic variation, but recent anthropogenic land-use change and habitat degradation are associated with a severe population decline and loss of genetic diversity. Models predict that the suitable niche of this bat has been progressively shrinking since the last glaciation period. This study highlights threats to Afroalpine and Afromontane biodiversity, squeezed to higher altitudes under climate change while losing genetic diversity and suffering population declines due to anthropogenic land-use change. We conclude that the conservation of tropical montane biodiversity requires a holistic approach, using genetic, ecological and geographic information to understand the effects of environmental changes across temporal scales and simultaneously addressing the impacts of multiple threats., British Ecological Society, Award: 4849/5889. Longidorid nematodes comprise more than 500 species, and Longidorus and Xiphinema are the most diversified, abundant and cosmopolitan genera, which increases the risk of species misidentification. We conducted an integrative morphometric and genetic study on two longidorid species to elucidate the existence of new cases of cryptic speciation within the genera Longidorus and Xiphinema. Detailed morphological, morphometric, multivariate and genetic studies were carried out, as well as mitochondrial and nuclear haploweb analyses, to differentiate species within the L. iliturgiensis- and X. hispanum-complexes. Species delimitation using haplonet tools of L. iliturgiensis-species complex clearly separated L. tabernensis sp. nov. from L. iliturgiensis and L. indalus. Similarly, the haploweb analysis of X. subbaetense sp. nov. showed it as a unique and separate species from X. hispanum and X. adenohystherum. D2-D3 expansion domains of 28S rRNA, partial 18S rRNA, and partial coxI region were used for inferring phylogenetic relationships. The present study provides new insights into the diversity of Longidorus and Xiphinema species detected in southern Spain, and new evidence of cryptic speciation in both genera. These results support our hypothesis that the biodiversity of Longidoridae in southern Europe is higher than previously supposed and is still not fully clarified., Peer reviewed

The general objective of the PEACETIME cruise is to study the fundamental processes and their interactions at the ocean-atmosphere interface, occurring after atmospheric deposition (especially Saharan dust) in the Mediterranean Sea, and how these processes impact the functioning of the pelagic ecosystem. During the proposed 33 days cruise in the western and central Mediterranean Sea in May 2017, we will study the impact of atmospheric deposition on the cycles of chemical elements, on marine biogeochemical processes and fluxes, on marine aerosols emission and how ongoing changes will impact the functioning of Mediterranean Sea communities in the future. The cruise is designed to explore a variety of oligotrophic regimes. Combining in situ observations both in the atmosphere and the ocean, and in situ and minicosm-based on-board process studies, the 40 embarking scientists from atmosphere and ocean sciences will characterize the chemical, biological and physical/optical properties of both the atmosphere and the sea-surface microlayer, mixed layer and deeper waters. The PEACETIME strategy (season and cruise track) associated to a combination of dust transport forecasting tools and near real-time satellite remote sensing is designed to maximize the probability to catch a Saharan dust deposition event in a stratified water column in order to follow the associated processes in-situ. This coordinated multidisciplinary effort will allow us to fill the current weaknesses/lacks in our knowledge of atmospheric deposition impact in the ocean and feedbacks to the atmosphere in such oligotrophic systems. As a key joint-project between MERMEX and CHARMEX : The PEACETIME project comes in the scope of the regional multidisciplinaryprogramme MISTRALS (Mediterranean Integrated STudies at Regional And Local Scales ), which aims at predicting the evolution of this region following strong expected changes in climate and human pressures. In this framework, the PEACETIME project constitutes a key joint project between the ChArMEx (the Chemistry-Aerosol Mediterranean Experiment) and MERMEx (Marine Ecosystems Response in the Mediterranean Experiment) initiatives, enabling to gather communities of atmospheric chemists and marine biogeochemists around the common question of assessing the impact of atmospheric deposition on the marine biogeochemical processes and air-sea exchanges., Peer reviewed
