Data from: An experimental extreme drought reduces the likelihood of species to coexist despite increasing intransitivity in competitive networks.- Matías L, Godoy O, Gómez‐Aparicio L, Pérez-Ramos I (2018) An experimental extreme drought reduces the likelihood of species to coexist despite increasing intransitivity in competitive networks. Journal of Ecology 106(3): 826-837. https://doi.org/10.1111/1365-2745.12962 .- Data available from the Dryad Digital Repository: https://doi.org/10.5061/dryad.5d1s9 (Matías, Godoy, Gómez-Aparicio, & Pérez-Ramos, 2018, Very little is known about how variation in environmental conditions alters the strength and the structure of competitive networks and what are the consequences of this for species coexistence.
We performed a competition experiment with 10 annual plant species to parameterise a population model describing species’ dynamics according to their vital rates and pairwise competitive coefficients. Seeds from all species were sown under two different climatic scenarios: (1) right before the first major storm of the growing season and (2) after an imposed fall drought of 2 months simulating an extreme climatic event of intense aridity.
Species’ demography and competitive responses were used to estimate pairwise stabilising niche differences and average fitness differences. In addition, we used tools from network theory to characterise the structure of multispecies competition from the determinants of species coexistence. Specifically, we evaluated changes in competitive dominance between species pairs, and the prevalence of intransitive competitive relationships for 120 triplets between these two climatic events.
The experimental extreme event significantly reduced fitness differences between species pairs. Such an equalising mechanism promotes coexistence. However, niche differences were also reduced in such a way that the number of species pairs whose niche differences overcame their fitness differences was reduced from six to two.
Contrary to our expectations, the extreme event did not increase the hierarchy of competitive dominance. Instead, and depending on the technique used, the prevalence of intransitivity remained marginally similar (17% to 22%) or significantly increased from 19.4% to 29.8%. This pattern was likely a consequence of the significant changes in competitive dominance between species pairs (26 changes out of 45; 58%).
Although fitness differences were equalised and intransitive competition promoted, our model predicted a lower likelihood of coexistence under the extreme event for both species pairs and triplets, mainly because competitive interactions did not promote enough niche differences to balance the observed fitness asymmetries in our competitive networks.
Synthesis. We empirically proved that an extreme climate results in communities with reduced niche and fitness differences in which species are less likely to coexist despite the increasing prevalence of intransitive competition., Was funded by a Juan de la Cierva grant (FPDI-2013-15867). This dataset contains observations of elemental composition of atmospheric aerosols performed at Izaña Observatory, located (28◦18’N, 16◦29′W) at 2367 m.a.s.l. (meters above sea level), in Tenerife island. The measurements were performed with the objective of studying the variability of Saharan dust composition. The samples were analyzed with the technique PIXE (Particle Induced X ray Emission) at the Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare (INFN) at Florence (Italy). The variability of dust composition is compared with the variability of large-scale meteorology traced with the North African dipole Intensity (NAFDI), i.e. the differences of the anomaly of the geopotential heights at 700hPa between the subtropic (Morocco) and the tropic (Niger) in North Africa., This dataset was obtained within the frame of the projects POLLINDUST (reference CGL2011-26259) and AEROATLAN (reference CGL2015-66299-P), funded by the Minister of Economy and Competitiveness of Spain and by the European Regional Development Fund., Sheet <01-aerosols 2010, Sheet <02-NAFDI 2010>, Sheet <03-aerosols 2013>, Sheet <04-NAFDI 2013>., Peer reviewed

DESCRIPTIVE SKELETAL ANATOMY OF BLOMMERSIA TRANSMARINA (AMPHIBIA: ANURA: MANTELLIDAE) FROM THE COMORO ISLANDS
- Santos-Santos, Javier H.
- Guinovart-Castán, Mireia
- Vieites, David R.
Mantellid frogs present an extensive adaptive radiation endemic to Madagascar and Comoros, being the subfamily Mantellinae the most morphologically and ecologically diverse. The Mantellinae present key innovative evolutionary traits linked to their unique reproductive behavior, including the presence of femoral glands and a derived vomeronasal organ. In addition, previous studies pointed to size differentiation in playing an important role in species’ dispersal capacities and shaping of their geographic ranges. Despite the high phenotypic variation observed in this clade, to date an exhaustive morphological analysis of their anatomy has still not been performed, much less in relation to internal structures. Here, we present a comprehensive skeletal description of a mantellid species, Blommersia transmarina, from the island of Mayotte in the Indian Ocean, which has potentially undergone a process of moderate gigantism compared to other Blommersia species. We describe its intraspecific skeletal variation utilizing non-destructive volume renderings from μCT-scans, and characterize the presence of sexual dimorphism and size covariation in skeletal structures. Notably, we found numerous signs of hyperossification, a novel structure for mantellids: the clavicular process, and the presence of several appendicular sesamoids. Our findings suggest that skeletal phenotypic variation in this genus may be linked to biomechanical function for reproduction and locomotion., Peer reviewed

[RAW DATA] LIPIDOMIC EFFECTS OF BISPHENOL A IN ZEBRAFISH ELEUTHEROEMBRYOS DURING THE YOLK SAC ABSORPTION STAGE

Previous studies on the effects of bisphenol A (BPA; 4,4'-(propane-2,2-diyl)diphenol) in zebrafish identified lipid metabolism as particularly affected by BPA exposure. We perform here a lipidomic analysis in zebrafish eleutheroembryos exposed up to 8 mg/L of BPA from day 2 to day 6 post fertilization. Total lipids were analyzed by high-performance thin layer chromatography as wide-range preliminary screening. Selected conditions were used to obtain a high-quality lipid profile using ultra high-performance liquid chromatography/time-of-flight mass spectrometry. BPA specifically impaired the physiological consumption of triglycerides (TG), diglycerides (DG), phosphatidylcholines (PC) and phosphatidylinositols (PI), most of them yolk sac-related lipids. These effects seemed more related to a decrease in energy consumption in BPA exposed individuals than to an impairment of lipid transport from the yolk sac. Integration of these results with previous morphological, biochemical, transcriptomic, metabolomic and behavioral data suggests that changes on lipid metabolism first appeared at very low BPA concentrations, and that they propagated across different organization levels. The analysis also suggests that the disruption of different signalling pathways by BPA results in a combination of adverse outcomes (estrogenic and lipid disruption, eye development), making it advisable a tighter limitation on BPA exposure limits for both wildlife and human populations., This work was supported by the European Research Council under the European Union's Seventh Framework Programme (FP/ 2007-2013)/ERC Grant Agreement n. 320737.
