The Stratum III of the excavations of R.W. Hamilton at the site of Tell Abu Hawam (Haifa, Israel) is important in chronological debates because of yielding Aegean pottery in the Levant and of having pottery parallels in materials of the first Phoenician colonies in the West. In a revision of Hamilton’s excavations (who dated it to 1000-925 (?) B.C.), Herrera dated it to ca. 1025/1000-750/725 B.C. and subdivided it into six phases. In this article we present the new dating, propose adjusting its...
La literatura tartésica. Fuentes históricas e iconográficas

Almagro-gorbea, Martín
Strabo (III,3,6) speaks about the existence of literature in Tartessos. These topic has been forgotten in recent studies. These analysis is based on the fact that oral and written literature and iconography are interrelated languages, which allow identify several mythical and historical texts known through classical authors and iconography, as the relieves from Pozo Moro and orientalizing bronzes and ivories; There also were sacred poems and legal texts. Tartessian literature began in Late...
Because of the double romantic concept about Arcadia (on the one hand, the Arcadia felix; on the other hand, the rough Arcadia), the historiography has considered that the polis did not develop in Arcadia until the end of the VIth century and the Vth century. Hovewer, I think that there are enough evidences (city-ethnics, civic mints, interstate relations, Pythian and Olympic victories and relations, a delimited and structured territory and urban archaeological evidence) to say that from the...

Valdés Guía, Miriam
The argive defeat at the battle of Sepea against the Spartans meant for Argos the start of a period of changes and of citizen integration, that affected to a part of the dependent population, as well as a time of opening toward more democratic positions. These processes were already related, even in the oldest sources, as Herodotus, with cults (as that of armed Aphrodite) and rites (the Hybristika) of the city in which the assumption of “male” prerogatives (the deliberation and the war) on the...

A close examination of Polybius’ Histories points to the Greek Annales of Fabius Pictor as the origin of the name “Celtiberians”, a composed word created by the first Roman historian on the base of the similarities between the Celts invading Italy and the “Celts of Iberia” –this is the meaning of Keltivbhreı–, which successively fighted as mercenaries beside the Romans, the Carthaginians and diverse Iberian peoples during the Hannibalic War and the first decades of the Roman conquest...

Mastrocinque, Attilio
In the years 91 to 82 BCE Italy had to suffer because of a series of civil and external wars. People believed that the entire world was upset in occasion of the birth of a new saeculum, as the Etruscan soothsayers were forecasting. A very deep crisis of institutions and social system was in progress, which let people believe that the socialsystem of the polis had to fail. Pompey’s efforts could give new trust in the Toman political and social system, for which Posidonius gave a new ethical...

Auctis finibus populi Romani?
Lyasse, Emmanuel
An examination of the material in total, and in particular of the so-called Lex de imperio Vespasiani shows that the relationship between the extension of the pomerium and the extension of the Empire is far from being clear. This matter seems to have been obscure even for the people of that. This invites a reconsideration of the question of an extension of the pomerium by Augustus, an interpretation which has been generally discounted over the past few years.

The matter of the editio quaestoria in the late Roman Empire still raises many questions nowadays due to the scarcity of sources related. In this study, we wonder about the translation of the date of celebration to october, the high degree of absenteeism (observed in Philocale’s calendar), the collegiality of this magistrature (one may assume that it does not exist as such in the show organization), or the professio quaestoria, which allows to know in advance how many questors would offer games...

In this article I support three hypothesises. First is that Marcus, the first Briton usurper, was “comes Britanniarum”. Secondly, the cause of the revolt was not the pressure of barbarian people in the island (it was not less in the forth century) but a lack of payement to the garrison placed in.This garrison included not only static troops, but also comitatenses. Finally, the third hypotesis refers to Constantinus, the future Constantinus III. He was not an occasional usurper appointed by...

The analysis of the sources allows to affirm that during the first bellum servile in Sicily the insurgents rendered cult to Demeter, specially venerated in the sacred city of Enna, capital of the slave kingdom. It can be infered from the information provided by Cicero in the Verrines that Eunus-basileus Antiochus had under his control the sanctuary of the goddess.

In these pages we consider the possibility of some kind of continuity between Solonian and Cleisthenic Boule, over all in its hypothetical judicial function as Heliaia in the time of the tyranny. The Peisistratid government supported by the Attic demos, promoted a more unified and stronger sense of citizenship which favoured the resistance and the victory of the Athenian people over Cleomenes and Isagoras; this took place at the end of dm Sixth Century B.C. under the leadership of the Council...

The victory of Medea on the dragon is known in ltaly in the VII century B.C., thence three passages of Columella (X 367-368), Hyginus (Fab. XXVI 3) and Servius (ad Aen. VII 750) may show an Etruscan ceremonial, because they present Etruscan peculiarities and relate the fight of Medea against the snakes.

Alberro, Manuel
Our present knowledge about the ancient Celtic societies of the Iberian peninsula derives from historical archaeological and linguistic evidence. On the other hand, the Celts of Ireland and Wales left behind a rich oral literature full of myths, legends and sagas that have been preserved. The analysis of the cultural traits of the insular Celtic societies presented in this paper could perhaps contribute to a better understanding of the ancient Celtic peoples of the Iberian peninsula.

El Bouzidi, Saïd
It was not by chance that the Latin agronomists have stressed upon the purchase norms and the management patterns regarding the villa rustica as early as the llnd century AD. It was the Caton’s injunctions that basically helped to give a big spring to the villa rustica in order to incarnate other roles which responded better to the new era that was characterizing Roma with regard to it expansion in the Mediterranean area the villa were then performing other functions than the agricultural...

Pina Polo, Francisco
The so-called “Bronze from Ascoli” contains the grant by Pompeius Strabo, in the context of the Bellum Sociale, of the Roman citizenship to the members of the turma Salluitana, horsemen coming from several towns in the Ebro valley (Hispania Citerior). The turma Salluitana was recrouited in Salduie-Salduvia because this town was a central place in the area and was the only town mentioned in the Ascoli inscription next to the Ebro river, and was therefore endowed with an embankment that made...

Appius Claudius Pulcher’s biography is developed largely in the shade of the political career of M. Cicero, his successor in Cilicia’s government. We are dealing with a hard and genuine member of the old patrician aristocracy, perhaps the last one of a geos. the Pulcrhii who was competent to assume a leadership in the most arduous century of the Republic. We examine his political ambition, his strong ties and familiar profits in Cilicia, and the institutions and state’s singular notion who show...

Livy gives the names of about fifty Hispanic urban centres. It is relatively easy to identify o the main towns among them, but the information about secondary urban areas is too incomplete for a reconstruction of the urban hierarchy to be possible. This corpus also enables us to get a more definite idea of Livy’s rigour in his use of the terms referring to the various urban categories, i.e. turres, arces, vici, costella, oppido, urbes and civitates.

It is said that a letter written by The Visigothic king Sisebutus (AD 612-621) and addressed to Eusebius, the metropolitan bishop of Tarragona, could give us the later date for the exhibition of ludi theatrales at Hispania (AD 614/620). Howewer, this does not mean that we must rely on this document to date the last performance at Hispania of another king of games. Maybe these shows that the epistle mentions were private exhibitions. This is a logical conclussion if we remember the fact that...
